Does anyone else feel unnerved by the news about King Charles?

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 06/02/2024 11:53

Yes I know this belongs in the Royal section but more traffic here for people feeling like I do.

King Charles has cancer, I am sure William is wondering if he will become King sooner than he anticipated. It makes me wonder too if Kate will be okay due to her recent surgery - William really needs her by his side if he is going to take on the Big Job.

Harry rushing home feels bad to me. I mean, it's good that he is coming to see his dad but it makes me feel as though it's serious - I just hope, hope it's not pancreatic cancer - but I just don't have a good feeling.

The Queen's only been gone 16 months. I feel out of sorts. Anyone else?

Hi OP,

I understand what you mean. I think part of it is because the late Queen always pretended that everything was fine. She gave us all this sense of reassurance that no matter what was was going on in the wider world, she would always be as solid as a rock and totally reliable.

I think King Charles has very sensibly decided to tell us about the cancer so we can understand that these things happen to everyone, and that we all have to look after ourselves and get our screening tests done.

I think he is still "there for us" in the sense that the late Queen was, but he is doing it differently by teaching us that it is okay to be vulnerable. I think that is a good thing.

For those on the thread who are saying the monarchy is irrelevant, I think King Charles is also giving a nod in that direction, by saying that he is only human, and that is probably a healthy thing too, for all of us.

facepalmdaily · 06/02/2024 16:06

Not at all. I really don't like the man, not that I wish him any ill but there are thousands of people on cancer waiting lists up and down the country that are struggling to get treatment. KC will get everything he needs at a moments notice.

Normandy144 · 06/02/2024 16:09

I don't feel unsettled at all. I think the King is being very pragmatic about these things. He went in for an operation, they found something else and he's being treated. He's not on his death bed. His son is flying in to see him to see how he is. If I was as rich as they are and it meant I could fly to see my sick relative with such ease then I would too. I hope he gets left alone to recover and is given the privacy he deserves. As for Kate and William, again, they wouldn't be the first family to have to go through a tricky operation, but ultimately it sounds like it went well and they'll soon be back to business. I don't understand all the hand wringing to be honest.

No. He's an old man. Cancer is very common.

@Rosscameasdoody I was diagnosed with early stage cancer a few years ago and I was treated very quickly on the NHS, all good now. So I’m lucky, I appreciate so many people aren’t.

I just don’t get why people have to act so heartless towards him. He hasn’t asked for blanket coverage on the news, he probably doesn’t even want the attention.

Blame the media not someone who’s just had devastating news.

Absolutely agree.

i don’t understand why anyone wouldn't feel sympathy for someone and their family when diagnosed with cancer.

edit to say - pleased to hear things went well for you.

I think people are annoyed at OP, not Charles

guineverehadgreeneyes · 06/02/2024 16:13

No, I don't feel "unnerved" or "out of sorts".

One in three new cases of cancer are found in the over 75 age group. One in two of us will develop cancer over a lifetime. Being a member of the Royal Family does not make its members immune to ill-health - though they will have access to early screening, early diagnosis and the best possible medical care and recuperation.

I wish him well (though I do not think we should have a monarchy).

It's very sad when anyone finds out they have cancer. I hope that there is a good outcome for him. I find it awful when people comment about finances at a time like this for anyone.

Finances are linked to cancer. You're more likely to get cancer in this country, and die of it, if you're poor. I'm more unsettled by the 33,000 extra cases a year due to poverty/austerity.

QueenBitch666 · 06/02/2024 16:15

No. Couldn't give a flying fart tbh Grin

Trez1510 · 06/02/2024 16:16

No.

I have much more pressing/unsettling issues in my life than which particular parasite sits on the throne at any given time.

SallyWD · 06/02/2024 16:19

No not at all. Don't get me wrong.of course cancer is a worry and I wish him all the very best - however it doesn't unsettle me. Apparently his prognosis is good, it was caught early. I've had cancer and know many cancer survivors. It's not always a death sentence. He'll receive the very best care.
I'd be unsettled if it was someone close to me but it's not.

Rosscameasdoody · 06/02/2024 15:21

Not prostate cancer - they made that clear. It was found during surgery. And where did you get the idea that ‘almost all men his age’ have prostate cancer ? That’s bizarre !!

Edited

"Prostate cancer incidence increases with age: the older you are, the greater your chance of developing it. Although only about 1 in 456 men under age 50 will be diagnosed, the rate shoots up to 1 in 54 for ages 50 to 59, 1 in 19 for ages 60 to 69, and 1 in 11 for men 70 and older."

Many older men will develop prostate cancer but will die from some other cause.

Elphame · 06/02/2024 16:21

No.

He’ll get the best possible treatment and the latest drugs very quickly. No delays or rationing of treatment for him.

My sympathies are reserved for those who got the same diagnosis last week but probably haven’t been able to even see an oncologist yet, let along the best in the country, nor will they have the chance to start treatment so quickly

PerfectTravelTote · 06/02/2024 16:21

Eh, no.

FluffyFanny · 06/02/2024 16:24

Oh, here we go agian... when will people understand that money allocated for Royal funerals and coronations doesn't come out of the food bank fund!

LillythePinky · 06/02/2024 16:25

No.

And what I hate about the lack of information that goes with the news, is the notion that all cancer is a death sentence.

I think the Palace should have been more open because this half-story means we get people like @TakemedowntoPotatoCity speculating that KC is not going to be around for long.

Some cancer that is found early can have a 90+% cure rate.

All the hype over this is terrible IMO.

It would have helped more to say what it was and that there is (if it's the case) a good chance of a complete recovery.

LillythePinky · 06/02/2024 16:26

@Elphame Posting nasty comments doesn't help anyone.

Jealousy has no place in this.

Viohh · 06/02/2024 16:28

It’s sad to know a family is facing something as awful and upsetting as cancer. The prospect of losing a loved one is devastating no matter how much money you have in the bank. But he is just a man. People are born. And people die.

I’m concerned for people who are taking this so personally.

I also found the hysteria surrounding the Queen bizarre. She had one of the best deaths possible. And what a blessing for her to have been basically fit and well to very the end. It was not the tragedy some were making it out to be.

FluffyFanny · 06/02/2024 16:29

BestBadger · 06/02/2024 16:13

Poverty doesn't cause cancer! Alcohol, smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise etc. cause cancer. Poor people tend to lead less healthy lifestyles but that's generally their own choice. You can be poorer and still healthy. Healthy food is not expensive.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 06/02/2024 16:29

The incidence is even higher in the 80+ cohort:

https://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer/prostate-cancer-risk-factors

"About one man in nine will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime, but only one in 39 will die of this disease. About 80% of men who reach age 80 have cancer cells in their prostate."

Shiningout · 06/02/2024 16:31

I've no idea why someone would be unnerved by this. If one in two of us are predicted to get cancer it's hardly shocking when someone (especially in their 70s) is diagnosed!

The world didn't stop turning when the queen died and it won't if/when Charles goes. Life will go on!

mum11970 · 06/02/2024 16:35

Unnerved - no; sympathetic - yes; bored by the hours of coverage - yes.

ORLt · 06/02/2024 16:35

It is natural to feel unnerved when the whole country seems to be falling apart in all sorts of ways, including the Royal Family.

No, a friend of mine has a brain tumour, it was diagnosed shortly after she had been treated for and recovered from breast cancer. Now that does unnerve me and occupy my thoughts. Another friend has just had a lump removed from their head and is awaiting the biopsy results. Of course I hope Charles is treated successfully and is restored to good health, but I wish that for anyone who is having to deal with cancer or indeed any other serious health condition.
