Hi ladies just wanted to know if other women or men take Valentine's Day serious like do you love when your partners do something for you even if it's just a nice cooked meal or flowers or taking you out.

Reason asked my boyfriend said to me today why do I keep asking about what we are doing for Valentine's Day it's only a one day thing and i'm being annoying he's not interested in that and it's something he's not interested in bare in mind I don't usual get nothing for him anyway lol so I take Valentine's Day as a nice occasion that we both can do for each other as im a big gifter and feel good when I give others stuff I even get my mum something for Valentine's Day some flowers

We ignore Valentine's day. Why should you have one day a year when you do something nice together or for each other? Even worse is the price inflation for meals out etc.

Why would only be nice to each other one day a year??? 😲

fleurneige · 04/02/2024 18:25

No, just another commercial nonsense event.

tinytemper66 · 04/02/2024 18:26

Never celebrate it as our anniversary is a few days later

Nah. It's all a bit naff. Scheduled appreciation. Whatever happened to spontaneity? Stolen by hallmark so they can charge for it.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/02/2024 18:26

A card, his is mushy, I buy a funny one. Chocolates, flowers and he’ll cook something nice. Last year I was away, this year we both away so probably won’t do anything much.

FirstDanceLastDance · 04/02/2024 18:40

No, we don’t do anything for it as it does feel a bit forced to me. If other happy couples want to celebrate it, that’s nice if they enjoy it. Life can be busy and I think it’s helpful for some couples to have marked days where they spend time together properly as otherwise it may not happen at all with work, kids, family etc.

The only ones that make me roll my eyes are those with crap relationships, usually the bloke treats his partner like a servant and is thoughtless every day of year, doesn’t pull his weight, crap father etc but then he buys a card and flowers fir Valentine’s Day, acts vaguely decent for a day and she acts like he’s so lovely. 🙄 Its their business though and I mainly keep my distance from those couples now as watching and hearing about all the unhappiness with an occasional good day is draining and frustrating.

BeReet · 04/02/2024 18:41

We've never celebrated it in 30yrs but it's our daughter's birthday on Valentines Day and we definitely celebrate that

TheChosenTwo · 04/02/2024 18:46

No. He has sometimes bought me flowers but definitely not every Valentine’s Day.
we don’t do cards but he will make us a nice dinner - as he does every other night of the year. Which we will eat with our dc.
I don’t think it’s really intended for established couples but of course there are many that do participate. I always thought it was about a secret admirer declaring their love for someone without revealing themselves.
Dh and I have been together over 20 years, he knows I love him and vice versa.

cbbo · 04/02/2024 18:50

No. No gifts or cards. But we do use it as an excuse to go out for a meal

364 other days to be spontaneous! What's wrong with one day being for romance?

If you do choose to celebrate it it's not obligatory to buy a Hallmark card you know

Mrsloverlover · 04/02/2024 19:01

Oh I take it DEAD seriously.
Always make sure to treat myself to a bottle of chanel or two, put some fairy lights up, get some beautiful flowers, posh chocs.
oh and I’m single . But I have daughters and it’s important to show them we can enjoy exactly what we deserve with or without a man 😃. Call me a sad bastard but it really brightens that dark bit of the year between Christmas and Springtime.
We eat gorgeous food, get loads of fancy cheese, watch a nice film, bliss.
In my experience men have never really lived up to my Valentines expectations anyway, I do a far better job.

MightyGoldBear · 04/02/2024 19:03

Yes we do always have. It can be whatever you want it to be. We have never done chocolates or teddies type stuff. But we celebrate our love. Life is hard why would we not choose a extra day(note -not the only day still romantic 365 days too) to celebrate eachother.

It's important to both of us. We equally would be hurt if the other forgot or didn't want to do anything.

If it wasn't important to me but was to my husband I would still celebrate because he is important to me.

BigButtons · 04/02/2024 15:07

No- it’s a load of commercial rubbish. Just like Christmas and Easter.

Totally agree, just a money making scheme.

Local pub has a sign £59.99 each for Valentines dinner! It's a Wednesday night such a rip off.

Been married nearly 28 years always felt like this

ContinentalBreakfast · 04/02/2024 19:15

We send cards. And I save them every year in a special box. We don't do flowers or presents, or got our for meals, or cook special dinners, but I like a card.

DinnaeFashYersel · 04/02/2024 19:16

Not since I was about 15

usedtobeasizeten · 04/02/2024 19:16

We go to a favourite restaurant for lunch (we go often) and happily they don’t have a special menu for Valentine’s Day….

MotherofPearl · 04/02/2024 19:18

Less than no interest in Valentine's Day, and fortunately my DH feels the same.

Aria2023 · 04/02/2024 19:18

Yes, never seems popular on MN, but i’ve always celebrated with dh. Cards, meal out or nice home cooked meal, rose, valentines cupcakes for dh. Yeah it's just a ‘day’ but I personally like any excuse to make each other feel special. If people don't like to celebrate, fine, but I do think in a couple, it's best if you're on the same page and I think if one person likes to celebrate, the other should make a bit of effort. A sweet card and a box of chocs/flowers is easy enough and surely worth it if it makes your oh smile.

JustFrustrated · 04/02/2024 19:20

Nope, no interest here.

But we do buy each other gifts randomly quite frequently anyway. We're very loving towards each other all the time

mydogisthebest · 04/02/2024 19:22

I agree that if neither of you are bothered then why celebrate but if one or both of you like celebrating and a more romantic than a lot of mumsnet seem to be it's a nice thing to do.

You can never show too much love and none of us know how much time we have.

My parents celebrated it for the 68 years they were together and they were very much in love - always holding hands, cuddling etc. They also showed their love for each other year round

PudgeControlsTheWeather · 04/02/2024 19:23

We do nothing. Except go to Tesco and see if there are any good deals on nice foods/wines.

Goatymum · 04/02/2024 19:29

We do cards, that’s it! Meals out are a rip off, but I might make a nice dinner at home.
After he once bought me roses and then told me how much they were (I asked!), I says never again 😆

Loafbeginsat60 · 04/02/2024 19:32

We do cards and I'll make a nice dinner - dh will probably buy something or bring flowers.

I'll get him a white toblerone and some nice wine.

avocadotofu · 04/02/2024 19:32

No

theweecharmbean · 04/02/2024 19:33

Not really, I mean we might exchange a card but I'm not going into a rage slamming doors if he doesn't get me 50 red roses and a ginormous teddy.
