Is there anyone weird like me that loves fhe dark mornings and ideally dark at 7 but prefers summer? I am dreading it getting dark late and lighter early. But prefer the warner weather. I see in certain places like Australia it gets dark af 7 in the summer snd actually like that. I've got back out curtains,, and hate sunlight coming in but enjoy beaches, being our in the summer. I have sensory issues to lights, touch and certain soundd anyway.

I quite like driving to work in the light, but HATE the low sun driving home. There should be a rule introduced that roads can't go East West without some form of shade.

Sunshine at 4am is unreasonable tho!

transformandriseup · 03/02/2024 07:13

Oh man I love the light evenings, they go on to about 10:40pm in West Cornwall in the summer. It's still pretty dark in the mornings though at the moment.

LaPalmaLlama · 03/02/2024 07:13

I do prefer more even hours of darkness and light- eg Hong Kong where it gets light between 5-7am and dark between about 6-8pm all year round. So there’s some variation but much less than uk.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 07:21

I prefer summer and longer daylight hours. I get cabin fever after so many dark evenings.

Aroundthewaygirl · 03/02/2024 08:09

I love the dark mornings and evenings. I’m dreading it getting hotter and staying lighter longer.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 08:14

Do the dark morning lovers not drive to work?

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/02/2024 08:15

Dark mornings are the worst, there is nothing more depressing than walking to work in the dark.

mynameiscalypso · 03/02/2024 08:16

I love the hot weather. I don't mind the lighter mornings particularly but I don't like the long light evenings.

Delatron · 03/02/2024 08:16

Hate getting up in the dark. Feels very wrong for my body clock. Love having the option to do a run in the light before work or walk the dog. Ditto in the evening after work. I love light, warm evenings just being outside in the garden.

The dark makes me feel claustrophobic. Especially when it gets dark at 4pm. I hate driving in the dark and I’m not the ‘let’s snuggle under a blanket for 6 months all cosy’ type.

Only on Mumsnet do I read about people who enjoy endless hours of dark - getting up in it - and then what? Not sure what else there is to like about a long dark evening. Though ‘no pressure to go out’ is often quoted. I try and understand but to be honest if you don’t want to go out close your curtains and get back under that blanket on your sofa - you can do that all year if that’s what you love doing…

I love light, warm evenings just being outside in the garden.

My favourite past-time is an evening potter in the garden on a warm evening - deadheading the roses and having a general tidy up.

I agree about the pressure to go out. I just don't feel that at all. I love walking and cycling, and walking and cycling in the cold and dark isn't exactly pleasurable.

Callmesuperstitious · 03/02/2024 08:27

I love the peace and quiet the darkness brings. Summers are too noisy for me and usually ruined by neighbours wielding power tools.

Namechange87654321 · 03/02/2024 08:30

I love the dark mornings, I sleep so late! In the summer I always wake up at about 5am and can’t get back to sleep again.

LlynTegid · 03/02/2024 08:31

Love is not the word I would use. Given the choice I would choose them over dark evenings, one reason why I think we should have BST all year round.

Yes, it can be a problem if you have noisy neighbours.

Fortunately, all of our neighbours are quiet and considerate. I don't mind the sound of a lawnmower though. To me it is the sound of summer, and it doesn't last for long.

Hedjwitch · 03/02/2024 08:33

I am loving the lighter mornings now. I have a 45 minute drive to work and going both there and back in the dark is so depressing. Cant wait for long summer evenings.

ContinentalBreakfast · 03/02/2024 08:39

I love the variety. I wouldn’t want to be somewhere that was exactly the same every day. I like dark winter mornings, and the days where I shut the curtains against the night and the cold at 4pm. I love the early summer sun, and sitting in the garden until late. I like cold, bright autumn days, and the smell of decaying leaves. I like the first warm days of spring, and the feeling of a world coming to life.
I like the sense of the world turning and seasons changing.

When the children were small, dark winter nights made going to bed much easier.

mondaytosunday · 03/02/2024 09:16

I find it hard to get up in the dark, and I love cosy dark evenings!

Fizbosshoes · 03/02/2024 09:21

I love summer and late evening light but (sorryBlush) can't bear it when the birds start chirruping before 4am!! It drives me nuts.
My ideal daylight hours would be about 6.30am- 9.30pm in the summer.

I also hate it when it's dark at 4pm in the winter. I've read on MN that some people choose not to go out when it's dark and I wonder how they can function between about November and March!

ALongHardWinter · 03/02/2024 09:28

I quite like it staying light later in the evenings but I hate with a passion it getting light ridiculously early by the time late June/early July is here. If I wake up at 4.45an and it's daylight,I struggle to get back to sleep. I seem to spend June - August feeling permanently tired! I'm not a summer lover at all really, can't stand hot weather (anything hotter than 25 degrees is unpleasant for me). And I particularly dislike hot weather because it seems to turn so many people into utter wankers. I get sick of people in cars pulling up by the shops near where I live with stereos blaring out a racket which they call music, neighbours mowing their lawns constantly, kids screaming non-stop in nearby gardens, and the noise of the planes taking off from nearby Heathrow. I live under the flight path, and for some reason, the hotter the weather gets, the more likely they are to be taking off over my house. It's not too bad when they're landing, but taking off,the noise is sometimes unbearable when I've got windows open.

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/02/2024 09:29

Black out curtains are your friend.

reluctantbrit · 03/02/2024 09:45

I hate getting up in the dark and coming back in the dark. It eats away at me, especially on days I am in the office where there is not a lot of natural light to compensate compared to my office at home.

It's hardly so hot in the UK each Summer that you can't do anything, even in the south. There is plenty to do to keep a house resonable with decent curtains and airing it early and late.

I love hearing the birds chriping again and hope that the winter is turning.

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/02/2024 09:58

Yeah I am a bit shocked by people who hate bird song. One of the joys of spring is hearing the birds getting vocal again (even the noisy parakeets!).

Fizbosshoes · 03/02/2024 10:00

On some threads it's sounds like people bunk down for the winter and basically hibernate! And I wonder how they manage to do everything in the 7 or 8 hours of daylight?

Lots of women say they don't like going out in the dark (which is completely understandable) ....but I don't understand how you can avoid it in winter? Don't thry ever need to do anything or be anywhere after 5pm??

Fizbosshoes · 03/02/2024 10:02

I don't mind bird song at a later hour! Basically anything waking me up at 3.45am every day for weeks, would drive me nuts whether that's my kids ...or birds outside!

Talkamongstyourselves · 03/02/2024 10:20

I hate the dark mornings. It's a struggle enough to get up at 4.30am as it is without it looking like the middle of the night as well. Likewise dark evenings. Working after 6pm when it's dark outside is horrible, it makes me lethargic.
