Is there anyone weird like me that loves fhe dark mornings and ideally dark at 7 but prefers summer? I am dreading it getting dark late and lighter early. But prefer the warner weather. I see in certain places like Australia it gets dark af 7 in the summer snd actually like that. I've got back out curtains,, and hate sunlight coming in but enjoy beaches, being our in the summer. I have sensory issues to lights, touch and certain soundd anyway.

I find it hard to get up in the dark, and I love cosy dark evenings!

Same 😁

Funnily enough i heard birdsong at 8pm last night coming home from work. It was nice and unexpected.

Dark mornings are the worst, there is nothing more depressing than walking to work in the dark.

Edited

This, it is so unnatural

WildFlowerBees · 03/02/2024 10:47

I love winter and dark nights and mornings but this year I'm looking forward to spring and summer. I'm going to be very British this year and 'make the most of it' whenever it's sunny 😬

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 11:34

Lots of women say they don't like going out in the dark (which is completely understandable) ....but I don't understand how you can avoid it in winter? Don't they ever need to do anything or be anywhere after 5pm??

I drive. In summer I like to go for a walk in the evening when it is light. I wouldn't do this in winter.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/02/2024 13:22

You’re weird OP. Cold dark mornings and cold dark evenings. No thank you.

Comedycook · 03/02/2024 13:24

Only on Mumsnet do I read about people who enjoy endless hours of dark

Agree. In real life, I've never heard anyone say they prefer the dark. I always assumed everyone enjoyed lighter mornings and evenings. I absolutely hate getting up in the dark. I'm so much happier when it's light

Only on Mumsnet do I read about people who enjoy endless hours of dark - getting up in it - and then what? Not sure what else there is to like about a long dark evening. Though ‘no pressure to go out’ is often quoted. I try and understand but to be honest if you don’t want to go out close your curtains and get back under that blanket on your sofa - you can do that all year if that’s what you love doing…

On some threads it's sounds like people bunk down for the winter and basically hibernate! And I wonder how they manage to do everything in the 7 or 8 hours of daylight?

Lots of women say they don't like going out in the dark (which is completely understandable) ....but I don't understand how you can avoid it in winter? Don't thry ever need to do anything or be anywhere after 5pm??

Yes exactly! All this getting cosy under a blanket at 4pm (for 6 months!) and lighting some candles. Don’t they commute? Don’t they spend evenings ferrying kids around in the pitch black? It’s miserable if you do!

I’m sure the dark mornings are great if you don’t need to get up until 8.30am and can have a nice lie in. But it does go against body clocks to get up in the dark..so for most feels tough.

I have yet to meet anyone in real life who loves dark mornings. I do struggle to understand it. I get people not liking heat as we are all different. But enjoying the dark when it places so many restrictions on what we can do??

I live in SE Asia and it gets light at 7am year round and starts to get dark at 7pm year round. I thought I'd miss the changing seasons but it's actually one of the things I love most about living here. It's so constant and settled. You wake up and immediately know whether it's time to get up based on whether it's light or not. It's always dark when you want to put the DC to bed. I hate coming back to the UK in the winter and it getting dark at 4pm. And getting up at 7am and it's still dark like the middle of the night. Horrible.

Perihelion · 03/02/2024 15:26

Midsummer I end up sleep deprived due to the lack of darkness. Go to bed too late, wake up too early. In Scotland, so barely gets dark for a wee while.

EffortlessDistraction · 03/02/2024 15:37

I'm the other way round, I like it light from about 5.30am till 10.30pm but prefer cooler weather. My favourite months are April and May when you are starting to get properly long hours of daylight but it isn't too hot during the middle of the day (hopefully). The longs hours of darkness are totally doing my head in now after months of them. Can't wait to be able to have my morning cuppa in the garden and sit out till 10 in the evening.

ForeverWinter · 03/02/2024 20:29

I prefer the dark (and yes I commute)

Mornings it's easier because I just sleep on the train. Evenings I like it getting dark around 7:30/8pm but my life pretty much carries on in winter. The dog needs to be walked wether it's dark or not, whack a light on her and we're good to go.

I detest the summer, I can't stand hot weather and it just makes me feel lethargic and sleepy. I sleep with the window open year round so even though I have blackout blinds they just blow in the breeze and let all the light in

Acatdance · 03/02/2024 20:40

I'm the other way round - so the thing that annoys me might console you - the clock changes are skewed to lighter evenings/darker mornings because they don't go back until at least a month after the autumnal equinox, so you will have an extra month of dark mornings in the autumn.

Icantbedoingwithit · 03/02/2024 20:45

I am with you OP! I love the dark mornings…and evenings!

MrsSucculent · 03/02/2024 20:50

God no. I hate the dark mornings. I find it hard to get up, hard to stay awake, I can’t go out for an early morning walk. It sucks.

sanityisamyth · 03/02/2024 20:51

Why how can anyone like going to work in the dark and leaving work in the dark and not seeing any daylight. Winter is just totally bloody miserable.

RampantIvy · 03/02/2024 08:14

Do the dark morning lovers not drive to work?

Or have to get up and shower in the dark cold mornings. I sleep much better during the winter than summer, struggle to get up especially if I’m awake a lot during the night but drift off at 5/6am.

Fizbosshoes · 03/02/2024 10:02

I don't mind bird song at a later hour! Basically anything waking me up at 3.45am every day for weeks, would drive me nuts whether that's my kids ...or birds outside!

Can’t say I’ve ever been woken by birdsong. Blackout curtains keep it dark so that’s not a problem either.

Delatron · 04/02/2024 14:27

Sleep eye masks are a wonderful invention..

Do the dark morning lovers not drive to work?

Yes, and I still prefer them. I love getting all the way into the office and it still be just getting light. It's just more interesting than it all being daylight and never seeing sunrise.

I would have daylight 8-7 year round as my ideal

Delatron · 04/02/2024 14:39

The dog may still need to be walked but it’s much more pleasant on a warm summers evening ambling along the river (with maybe a stop at the local for an Al fresco drink) than in pitch black traipsing around the streets. Yes you can put a light on them but I wouldn’t let mine off in the dark - not a nice walk to do at all.
I would not be going through woods/fields in the dark!

Delatron · 04/02/2024 14:47

For most of human history we have relied on getting up in the light and going to bed in the dark. When we wake in the light we get a better cortisol response which makes us feel more alert and energetic. Higher levels of cortisol in the early morning improve brain function in the day.

When you wake in darkness this cortisol response is affected and this affects brain function.

I really have no idea why people like getting up in the dark when it’s so bad for us!

Janetime · 04/02/2024 14:47

God I love the light mornings and nights.

i love getting up early, making a coffee, and sitting outside on the patio quietly , listening to the birds, and looking at the signs of spring,,snowdrops, daffodils, camellias, and buds on the trees, or the blowsy flowers of summer, late evenings, sat outside, dinner, drinks, music,

there is still another 2 months basically before the clocks go forward, so you’ve time to enjoy darkness yet.

in real life I’ve also never met anyone who loves the dark . Or is infuriated by the sound of birds. Earplugs can sort that.

Differentfromtherest · 04/02/2024 14:52

I love the light mornings and evenings, so much better for my mood and general mental health. Although I am not a fan of high temperatures, I still love the summer. I am very much an outdoorsy person and hate being cooped up in the house during winter. I don't find cold winter evenings sitting indoors at all cozy, just depressing.

I burn easily so direct sunlight can be problematic for me, so I lather myself in suntan lotion and tend to start my day early before the extreme heat kicks in. Then, once it starts to get cooler again in the evening, out I go, walking or riding my bike.

I guess I am lucky that my garden has lots of shade, so I can potter around out there when it's too hot. House is solid stone so lovely and cool inside.

Different strokes for different folks.

DillDanding · 04/02/2024 14:53

I love the light mornings but I have to wear earplugs in the summer due to the bastard birdsong.
