Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

Does anyone remember bacon and egg pie? It was lovely but I can't find a recipe. It was bacon put in nests on a pastry base and the eggs were cracked whole in between each nest (about 6 eggs) with a pastry lid. I wish I had the recipe, it was lovely cold for picnics.

Parsley optional but my Mum always added it

Bacon, Egg and Parsley Pie - Polpier & Penpol

Our Property Manager Amanda Craze was given this lovely recipe by her Granny, a Cornish farmer’s wife with 11 children. When young, Amanda lived next door to her Granny and was always popping in for tea and the bacon, egg and parsley pie was a firm fav...

I've never seen anyone mention that on here but my mum used to make a bacon and egg pie. She didn't arrange the bacon though, but the eggs were put in whole. her discovery of quiche Lorraine meant she never did it again but I always wondered whether it was something she had made up herself.

I really really miss fresh and local food. I read this morning that 57% of the average UK person's daily diet is ultra processed food. Even normal looking bread is full to the brim with processed garbage. I really miss the days of stopping off at the local butcher's, the local bakers, the local fruit and veg place. There was much less variety and you had to cook more, but so much better for you.

That’s got me thinking about baked apples now @Walkingwashingmachine - did they have those in one of the Narnia books? I always thought it sounded delish!

Paw2024 · 30/01/2024 09:44

I had the best food in hospital
The caterers seemed amused happy I was enjoying it and kept loading me up BlushGrin

Cheese and onion pie with baked beans
Jam roly poly and custard

They turned up in the afternoon with 2 mugs of tea for me and asked if I could manage a "little bit of cake" and gave me a slice of Victoria sponge

All sort of traditional food, all lovely

Old fashioned things that are great... respectful men , chivalry, handlebar moustaches, . I havent met many respectful men these days...most sct entitled and think they deserve hot women when they're pretty mediocre themselves.

Does anyone remember eggs in a cup 😂 delicious

We called them chucky eggs, with salt, pepper and a knob of butter.

The floppy lettuce is a 'garden' lettuce isnt it?

Its far far superior to your icebergs and little gems, because it actually tastes of lettuce, rather than bitter water. It almost has a buttery greeny soft taste.

Yes, it is now known as Garden lettuce, back in the day before we had the horror that is iceberg, kos and little gem it was just lettuce and tastes way better than any of them.
I miss a 1990s dessert called Banana crunch but nobody else seems to remember it on the supermarket shelf beside the Angel Delight or Dream Topping.

FortunataTagnips · 30/01/2024 09:48

@Traumdeuter I’ve made baked apples a few times recently - so easy and absolutely delicious.

Tinned new potatoes.

Haven't had them for years.

Not sure how I would serve them though.

Love the idea of a corned beef pasty!

Put them in the air fryer and spray with a little oil, great for mid week roasties.

Not food but related - teasmades.

I know that technology has advanced and wifi kettles exist, or I could get a nespresso machine in the bedroom and have a coffee instead.

It's also not like I live somewhere where the kitchen is SO FAR from the bedroom that I can't just walk there and get a hot drink in the morning, but it just seems like such a win.

I remember Caroline Quentin being absolutely vile about her ex husband Paul Merton because he bought her a teasmade for her birthday so she could have a cup of tea first thing in the morning without getting out of bed.

I can't remember! Which Narnia book?? I must reread those for recipes. Those books are why I love Turkish Delight.
You take the core out of a large apple (can't remember if Bramley or normal) stuff the hole with raisins and then bake it. And then drizzle with syrup. I might have them tonight actually.

echt · 30/01/2024 09:57

Something to add to the lettuce discussion:

the peerless John Waters in his essay "Hatchet Piece - 101 Things I Hate" said iceberg lettuce was the "polyester of greens". He wasn't wrong.

Another bloody thing you can't get in Australia - Bramleys. Possibly some niche orchard somewhere grows them, Harcourt probably.

NoShelfControl · 30/01/2024 10:10

They had baked/roasted apples wrapped in bear meat in Prince Caspian.

Rich and fruity lardy cake, two hundred calories in every gobful.

Do you know a source of good lardy cake? It's really hard to come by these days.
I have a theory that caff have been partly ruined by the oven chip. Egg and chips used to be the meal of the gods but oven chips just aren't the same.
Honourable exception E Pellici in Bethnal Green which still make their own chips.

I had a lardy cake - last year - in Witney, Oxfordshire - probably a bit too geographically specific though!

Travelcrazy · 30/01/2024 10:33

@hillyholman that's it! Perfect thanks so much I will make it when the weather warms up. Really appreciate your help

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/01/2024 10:36

@beguilingeyes The Regency Cafe in Victoria also still makes proper chips.

Bring back Fry's Five Centres...bring back Fry's Five Centres!!! Please! I used to love those in my youth.

Can I nominate knitting? I purchased a fab pattern online before xmas for my daughter's Christmas jumper day with the cutest Rudolph on it and she got loads of praise. I was proud as punch and I bet my gran was clapping in heaven (she was a big knitter). So I put forth knitting!

WeirdPookah · 30/01/2024 10:55

Something simple I always enjoyed was white fish slow cooked in the oven in milk and butter. Used to have with peas and mashed potatoes.
We had a Rayburn for heating, so it was lit all the time. We used to have huge baked potatoes, done so slowly the skins where solid, and just have them with lots of butter for dinner. Nothing else.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/01/2024 11:01

I still make rice pudding and Eve’s pudding fairly often, and lemon meringue pie (from scratch, a bit of a faff) once a year for dh’s birthday.
Ditto to non-buggered- about macaroni cheese - and I wish they wouldn’t call it mac’n cheese!

And ham sandwiches with butter and English mustard, and no sodding mayo. (Though I will allow that in egg sandwiches.)

Wilkolampshade · 30/01/2024 11:06

@TommyNever lardy cake is my spirit animal...

piscofrisco · 30/01/2024 11:07

When I worked in London in a quite trendy bit there were alot of fancy lunches etc. but my boss and I would make a point every Thursday of going to the local cafe (like an old greasy spoon-a normal one not a gentrified one)where she would have mushrooms on toast and I would have two poached eggs on toast and we'd have a can of pop each then share whatever their pudding of the day was-usually a crumble of some sort. £6 each and I loved those lunches.
