Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

I make suet puddings and steamed sponges all the time- lovely and very easy.

Could you share your go-to Jam Roly Poly recipe please? I only tried making it once, years ago, and it was a sloppy mess. I don’t usually have fails.

I love Delia’s treacle sponge made with wholewheat flour, as does everyone I’ve ever fed it too. That’s foolproof too. A proper steamed sponge.

@Cappuccinfortwo and @sashh you must be the only two people in the universe to find the food in Shtisel appetising! We watched the whole thing convulsed with gleeful horror at the endless brown slop.

PandorasTin · 30/01/2024 08:34

Liver and bacon Casserole
Steak and kidney suet pudding
Queen of puddings
Fruit flan
Homemade rice pudding
Fried breakfasts without hash browns but with fried bread

The floppy lettuce is a 'garden' lettuce isnt it?

Its far far superior to your icebergs and little gems, because it actually tastes of lettuce, rather than bitter water. It almost has a buttery greeny soft taste.

The lettuce is also known as Butterhead (possibly that’s the name of a particular variety - I remember it from seed packets).

BrandNewBicep · 30/01/2024 08:41

Macaroni46 - iceberg lettuce is from a different family to cabbage - not the same at all.

diddl · 30/01/2024 08:41

Tinned new potatoes.

Haven't had them for years.

Not sure how I would serve them though.

Love the idea of a corned beef pasty!

ConfusedGin · 30/01/2024 08:41

Not food but related - teasmades.

I know that technology has advanced and wifi kettles exist, or I could get a nespresso machine in the bedroom and have a coffee instead.

It's also not like I live somewhere where the kitchen is SO FAR from the bedroom that I can't just walk there and get a hot drink in the morning, but it just seems like such a win.

😂True - but I'd still like to try the brown slop at Giti's café!

Pichalds in tomato sauce on Mothers Pride bread Toast with a slice of tomato on top.. grilled to warm it up.

It was a regular thing for tea at home in the late 60s and 70s . We have revived ithe idea recently and have (fancy )sardines on toast for dinner every so often ( but our bread is now DHs homemade sourdough. And theres no big tasteless tomato slice . Which means we are Officially Posh!🤣)

Funderthighs · 30/01/2024 08:48

We still eat a lot of things people have mentioned. Corned beef and potato pie has been a family favourite since the children were little. We eat other more fancy, modern things too but still enjoy the classics.

CactusMactus · 30/01/2024 08:48

Bloater paste sandwiches.

ShiftySquirrel · 30/01/2024 08:48

Two cakes, helpfully named by the family Grandma's cake and Grandad's cake.

Grandma's cake was a Madeira I think, slightly under cooked with a bit of a sunken top. It was always the same, and even better for being more gooey than a normal cake. Just delicious with a hint of nutmeg.

Grandad's cake was a light coloured fruit cake. No peel or currants or anything revolting, just sweet and lovely.

My grandma also used to make a fish curry with tinned pilchards I think. It was a really good after school dinner.

The old fashioned things that were great were my lovely grandparents!

ThreeRingCircus · 30/01/2024 08:49

Tinned tomatoes on fried white bread with loads of salt and pepper. You've inspired me to make this at the weekend!

Laska2Meryls · 30/01/2024 08:49

Fig rolls and Jaffa cakes are a blast from the past which needs reviving ..
And id quite fancy a corned beef and pickle sandwich.... 🤔

ShiftySquirrel · 30/01/2024 08:53

Tinned new potatoes- @diddl.
We used to have them whole, fried with salt and a little chilli powder and they were fantastic.

They're pretty good with just salt too. They get nice and crispy on the outside.

Jook · 30/01/2024 08:55

I bought some Viscount biscuits this week. Had one of those “oh what were they called?” convos with my DH and was surprised to find they were still going. Had to add them to the shop after that.

They're great cooked in the air fryer! I rinse them, dry them off, toss in a bit of oil and Season-All, then cook on the Max Crisp setting for 25 minutes shaking them every 5 minutes or so.

Can you still buy waggon wheels, I wonder? They used to be huge - and a huge treat when we got one . but I do remember them shrinking or maybe I got bigger !

Floppy lettuce was a 'round lettuce.

I have a jar of sandwich spread in the cupboard but wary of opening it as the last one wasn't as I remembered it. When I was studying I only had enough money for one sandwich a day, made with Heinz Sandwich Spread. None of the fancy biscuits and cakes the others bought for their breaks, and my evening meal was a bowl of home made soup made with vegetables scrounged from home or the leftovers at the market. That soup was good. I still make soup but it is never as good.

Egg and chips with soggy white bread and real butter. Proper white sliced bread in a greased paper wrapper, Sunblest. Made with wheat flour not soya/pea flour like it is now.

Stand back, ready to cringe. Nothing compares to a golden syrup steamed suet pudding. Suet pastry has a lot going in it's favour as well. Haven't eaten either in more years than I can count but tasty? Definitely.

Yes, steamed syrup pudding with extra syrup. Also steamed ginger pudding and Spotted Dick (not so keen on that though).

Jam Roly Poly, baked, not steamed.

We had that, it was Farmhouse cake. I make it sometimes. It is best when rectangular.

Yes you can. They even do a version with jam in the middle. I tried a ww a few years ago, as I was feeling all nostalgic. For myself, I should have stuck with the memories!
