Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

Does anyone remember eggs in a cup 😂 delicious

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/01/2024 07:56

Hot quiche lorraine(with salad cream)

Scotch eggs

Cheese on toast

Stand back, ready to cringe. Nothing compares to a golden syrup steamed suet pudding. Suet pastry has a lot going in it's favour as well. Haven't eaten either in more years than I can count but tasty? Definitely.

Does anyone remember bacon and egg pie? It was lovely but I can't find a recipe. It was bacon put in nests on a pastry base and the eggs were cracked whole in between each nest (about 6 eggs) with a pastry lid. I wish I had the recipe, it was lovely cold for picnics.

Travelcrazy · 30/01/2024 07:59

My Mum used to make cucumber and onion slices soaked in malt vinegar, I loved it.

AlreadyDropped · 30/01/2024 08:00

I make suet puddings and steamed sponges all the time- lovely and very easy.

Geese and marmite sandwich.

I've been eating them for at least 55 years.

I hope this is a typo for cheese. Or maybe I've been missing out....🤔

FrillyGoatFluff · 30/01/2024 08:01

Corned beef and pickle sandwiches
Jamaican ginger cake and custard
Rice pudding (possibly with jam)
Sausage, mash and beans

Mmmmmm

Gloryloroliesjo · 30/01/2024 08:02

Tinned salmon with vinegar and cucumber sandwiches; white plastic bread and proper butter.

Is that the Cheddar Goose?

Violetparis · 30/01/2024 08:07

Home made corned beef and potato pie, a favourite in my north eastern family. There's always one at a family funeral.
Plain caramel things instead of salted caramel.

Thighdentitycrisis · 30/01/2024 08:08

@Travelcrazy
we had cucumber and tomato slices served that way too in little dishes!

the lettuce is called a Round lettuce

Teddleshon · 30/01/2024 08:08

Any steamed pudding, everyone always loves them. Also Queen of Puddings and Chocolate Mousse. The oldies are the best!

Thighdentitycrisis · 30/01/2024 08:09

I quite often have tinned peach slices with evaporated milk for pudding

Macaroni46 · 30/01/2024 08:09

From my greengrocer Saturday job days:
Floppy lettuce is called a round lettuce.
Iceberg is actually a type of cabbage.

I think I’ve seen one in the Be-Ro cookery book. I’ll have a look when I get downstairs. I was a child in the 1950’s and mum used to make one except hers was a pastry base on a pie dish with shredded, cooked ham leftovers strewn onto the pastry, two hard boiled eggs sliced and laid over the ham then a couple of seasoned beaten eggs poured over. A pastry lid on top, egg washed then baked in the oven.

Mince and dumplings
broth and dumplings

Walkingwashingmachine · 30/01/2024 08:13

Id love some Toast Toppers now (like you've done a small puke on toast).
Sandwich spread in white bread sandwiches.
Pilchards on toast
Cocoa with the skin on
Cinnamon toast

I think I must have spent a lot of time eating toast.

Tinned peaches with cream
Baked apple with raisins in the middle and syrup
Fondant Fancies or any other Mr Kipling invention from the 1970s. Yum!!! Quite hungry now

Dipping bread into the juices when roasting beef.

The older generation of my family uses to also have this cold. The men would come home (from down the mines) and get the cold grease and gravy spread on bread while they waited for their dinner. A bit of bread and dripping.

NE England here, too and like a PP, we always have home made corned beef and potato pie. Again, definitely at funerals. We also have a bacon and egg pie, however my mother calls this a 'tart' which is thinner than a pie and made on a plate.

Chucky Egg. A soft boiled egg, chopped up in a cup with butter and salt and white pepper. Food of the gods. Was served to us kids in the 70s to eat with a teaspoon and a wedge of 'Cakey Butter' (white bread and butter)

Is that when the duck has run out.

High tea
We always used to have this on Sundays when I was growing up. As teenagers my sister and I always had our boyfriends around as well and the six of us used to sit at the table and have long debates about topical issues. (That makes us sounds terribly pretentious, but we weren't, honestly)

Yes to the peaches and cream - tinned peaches with evaporated milk
Banana custard (at school), or bananas with evaporated milk (at home)

My dh always carries aclean cotton handkerchief. It comes in surprisingly useful!

Last year, after watching Schtisel (?), ds and I often had a plain bolied egg and pickled vegetables for lunch. It was simple but nice! I normally have toast with my marmite but when we have a good white loaf, I love a thick untoasted slice with butter and lots of marmite.

Last one - sardines on toast. You used to be able to order this in John Lewis' café but I guess it's too simple for them now.

I watched Schiesel, and then bought a Jewish cookbook.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the food looked good.

Cathbrownlow · 30/01/2024 08:25

I used to love (still do) sardine paste and cucumber sandwiches made with white sloppy bread.

CatamaranViper · 30/01/2024 08:26

Cheese fondue. My friend introduced it to me over Xmas last year and it changed my life.

Plum loaf, optional butter. Non optional but on the side - a decent portion of good hard cheese and a diced apple that has a sharpness and is crisp. Bonus points if a good cuppa is served.

I love a good plum loaf. My MIL use to make a lovely one. You’ve inspired me to try. I think I’ve got her recipe somewhere.
