Old fashioned things which are great

The spam thread reminded me that I have had a craving for a salad with hard boiled egg and ham, possibly potato salad or warm new potatoes with butter and salad cream. It isn't chopped up or involving chickpeas and reminds me of cricket teas in the 70s, but it is what I fancy so I might make it for all of us tomorrow.
What else is dated but really 'hits the spot'? I'll throw in a 'Cornishish' pasty made with corned beef instead of real meat.
Anyone?

@MoonWoman69 Would the very small round biscuits with hard ipiped blobs of icing on top have been 'Iced Gems'?

nameXname · 31/01/2024 20:37

Sorry for typos. Should of couse been 'hard piped icing' (it was almost crunchy).

I’ve got my mums Farmhouse Kitchen cook book mentioned upthread. Written by Dorothy Sleightholme it has been well used by us both, I make the boiled fruitcake instead of a traditional Christmas cake, so much easier.

Yes, still available.

Heated rollers.

Does anyone remember
Russian slice?
I think it's also called tipsy cake

Yes! They used to sell it at Cooplands bakeries when I was a teenager. No idea if they do still..

Ruthdpl · 31/01/2024 20:57

Bread & butter pudding. Nuff said!

upinaballoon · 31/01/2024 21:04

Steak and kidney pie/pudding. Baked jam roll and custard. Yes. I do like pastry. Haven't read all 12 pages yet but see some nice suggestions as I've skipped. Dad liked Sandwich Spread. Can you still get it. If so, I'm getting a jar!

No I remember those as my gran used to buy me them. The ones I'm talking about were slightly smaller than a rich tea biscuit and had bobbly dots on top. The colours were dull, but the flavours were lovely!

Our local bakery does them! Very very "stick to the roof of your mouth"! The slices are quite big, one lasts me 3 goes!!!

I like an old fashioned trifle with the soggy sponge fingers in the raspberry jelly, the gelatinous custard layer and Dream Topping with a flake crumbled on top.

MeandT · 31/01/2024 19:49

ooh @MooseBeTimeForSnow 'vomit in a jar' in our house is piccalilli 😋

I also like cheese and picalilli sandwiches . Reminds me of visiting my nan on a Saturday afternoon - a cheese and picalilli sandwich for my tea while I phoned the ring and ride for her .

Keepthecat · 31/01/2024 21:08

Corned beef stew. I tin corned beef can make enough for 4 people, with potatoes, carrots, onions, salt and white pepper. Simple, reassuring, comfort food.

I've never stopped loving a Prawn cocktail, and still occasionally hanker after a Findus crispy pancake (never see them though)

I saw them in Farmfoods the other day.

I bought some Sandwhich spread the other week, last time I tried it I wasn't impressed and gave it away. Having just had some foul Heinz salad cream I suspect it will be similar but you might like it.

It's really quite disappointing to try salad cream after so many years. It tastes the same but unfortunately is no longer delicious. Found it unpleasant.

I quite often have tinned peach slices with evaporated milk for pudding

My Granny's favourite pudding, also yorkshire pudding with jam or golden syrup. She made a lovely parkin, measuring everything in cupfulls, sadly we don't have the recipe.

housekermit · 31/01/2024 21:45

Sandwich spread 😍 and I have been having pickled beetroots out of the jar this week!

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 31/01/2024 21:48

Tottenham cake

Toast Toppers

A single cream cracker topped with grated cheese and a slice of apple (primary school snack)

Chicken cobbler

Bacon and onion suet roll thing. God that was good. Like a steamed Swiss roll but savoury and flecked with bacon…

I had that exact salad for lunch yesterday, including the salad cream but with cold roast baby potatoes (leftovers) and it was, indeed, delicious.

'Proper faggots with mash and peas and a really rich gravy'

Do you make your faggots or buy them in? If you buy them, how do you make your really rich gravy? Our butcher sells nice faggots and I've wondered whether to make them hot and eat them as a main?

I've found a cooplands that's close-ish to me so next time I'm in that area I am going to call in.

Constance Carroll strawberry lip gloss

Born Blonde spray colour

Chips, gravy & pea wet (you need to be a northerner)

My uncle's 'Birds custard' made from the powder with hot milk and served with tinned peaches.
It was so thick you needed a hammer and chisel, but I loved it 😋
