If you won the lottery, say.. 10 million. Would you keep working?

A colleague said to me today that the true test of if you like your job is the lottery test, and apparently, this proves most people hate their jobs.

If you won a life changing amount, would you keep your job… if you truly hate your job, you wouldn’t even work your notice.

I think I would go crazy with nothing to do but would like to open a luxury dog hotel 😂 but in terms of my actual job, I would absolutely leave but really like the people so like to think I would work my notice.

How about you?

You'd need more than £10 million for the rest of your life. Unless you were really miserly/careful with it.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 29/01/2024 20:08

I'd still work...but only two days a week. Does that mean I like my job?

Toooldtoworry · 29/01/2024 20:09

I'd invest, give some to the kids and probably give up work to be a dog mum but I reckon I'd end up consulting to train people in my job. I'd get bored.

Jmaho · 29/01/2024 20:10

I probably wouldn't if I'm honest. Not because I don't like my job but because it is a nightmare trying to get any holiday as they like to apply ridiculous strict rules to my department that don't seem to apply to the rest of the (huge) company
And I'd want to go on holiday a lot

Floopani · 29/01/2024 20:10

I would be gone. No notice.

I would still work though, I would do something I find much more rewarding but is low paid and/or take a chance on self employment.

180monkeys · 29/01/2024 20:10

£10M is enough to spend £100k a year for 100 years?

Backinthedress · 29/01/2024 20:10

Same job, but for a third sector org on less money ... and maybe part time

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/01/2024 20:11

Yes, I would. I truly love my terribly paid and hugely unappreciated job.

CreateHope · 29/01/2024 20:11

Yes I’d leave - and do something else. I enjoy aspects of my job but I’d rather be working for a local charity I volunteer for, but can’t afford to work for.

BlueRidgeMountains · 29/01/2024 20:11

I would definately take a nice long break from work so l could travel, and then decide.

ArnieLinson · 29/01/2024 20:12

No. Id be gone. And then id retrain.

If you had a 50 year career you'd have to earn £200k a year to earn £10 million, I think most people could manage to be careful enough to manage on that for the rest of their lives

CreateHope · 29/01/2024 20:12

@muchalover for real??? £10 million is more than enough to live on!

DocOck · 29/01/2024 20:12

Nope I doubt it. I'd probably have to do something though so maybe I'd look at working for myself, rather than being beholden to someone else.

Really?

I think it depends on your age, how much you want as an income each month

I don't earn much, I'm in my 50's
To pay my existing wage each month without accruing any interest would take over 400 years to use up 🤣🤣

You really wouldn't. I could work another 20 years and only earn 1 million.
If I live the same lifestyle 10 would definitely do me the rest of my life.

Alainlechat · 29/01/2024 20:13

I would work my notice if only to keep my feet on the ground and then I would leave and do something more meaningful, but probably part time Grin

Midnightstares · 29/01/2024 20:13

God no, I’d quit straight away and there’s no way I’d work my notice.

I have a good, easy, well-paying job. Might as well let someone who needs the money do it. I can then do fun stuff with my life, not slave away in a job I don’t especially enjoy. If I needed to work in the future I would do something low-stress and much more enjoyable, for a lot less money but that would be fine.

Heavenssakes · 29/01/2024 20:13

Don't be daft.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/01/2024 20:14

I'd stay. But probably think about starting my own small non-profit in the same sector (housing) to plug some holes in provision.

Or consult for free!

Jessforless · 29/01/2024 20:14

Oh dear, I thought saying 10 million was a lot 😂 Pick your own jackpot I guess!

You must be planning to live an awfully long time.

How you figure that out? £10m is more than a hundred years salary to me. Ok sure there's inflation but if you invest it wisely it's LOADS. are you one of those Mumsnet high earners who isn't rich but brings in half a million a year?

No I wouldn't work but I would find other meaningful things to do. Ideally I'd win £150m because I have a million things I'd love to do. Lots of charities and artistic and cultural stuff I'd give money to. But with £10m I'd just dial that back a bit. I already do volunteering - I would do more. I'd have more time to do a trustee role or two. Advisory stuff in the profession I'm currently in. Pursue the art stuff I like. Be constantly busy with theatre and cinema trips. See friends. Travel. Read. Learn.

People who say they'd keep working with a sizeable lottery win are lacking in imagination.
