If you won the lottery, say.. 10 million. Would you keep working?

A colleague said to me today that the true test of if you like your job is the lottery test, and apparently, this proves most people hate their jobs.

If you won a life changing amount, would you keep your job… if you truly hate your job, you wouldn’t even work your notice.

I think I would go crazy with nothing to do but would like to open a luxury dog hotel 😂 but in terms of my actual job, I would absolutely leave but really like the people so like to think I would work my notice.

How about you?

I wouldn’t work if I won 10 million. I’ve got terrible health and don’t have expensive tastes so it would be more than enough for me for the rest of my life.

NotDoingOk · 29/01/2024 20:23

I would pay to re-train first. Then I would work, but probably not full time.

Sunshineofyourlove · 29/01/2024 20:23

I get a lot of satisfaction from my job and suspect I'd be a bit lost without it. But with all that money I could set up a charity and do something related, but maybe less stressful.

I'm a teacher of Additional Support Needs.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 29/01/2024 20:24

I am 62. £10m could take care of my wider family, pay for my & DHs care, and still leave enough for a hobby business of my choice.

would I still work? 🤔

You'd need more than £10 million for the rest of your life. Unless you were really miserly/careful with it.

You could spend £400,000 a year without even touching the capital 😭

Shinyandnew1 · 29/01/2024 20:24

I would not! We were talking about this in the staff room today-none of us would!

I might work my notice period. Maybe.

OldestSister · 29/01/2024 20:25

I work for myself and I'm on the cusp of retirement so to be honest, I'd only need a million!

TheQueenMakersDaughter · 29/01/2024 20:25

They wouldn't see me for dust.

I'd go work part time in a bookshop or something to keep myself busy, tho.

Onehappymam · 29/01/2024 20:25

In my current job? Hell no.

But I’d change jobs to spend my time doing something I love, part time.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 29/01/2024 20:26

Not a chance in hell.
I would be telling them to stick it.

EffortlessDistraction · 29/01/2024 20:26

I love my job but I'd probably be off, there are too many other things I'd want to do and not enough time. I'd really miss my colleagues though.

Whatsmyusername1235 · 29/01/2024 20:27

I wouldn’t work, I would just keep travelling.

Merrow · 29/01/2024 20:28

I was talking with DP about this at the weekend actually, and how I would definitely quit my job but would probably go back to working at Waterstones. I loved working there.

HerRoyalNotness · 29/01/2024 20:29

i’d Uber the laptop back the same day!

Snackpocket · 29/01/2024 20:29

I’d definitely quit my job, without question. Even if you love your job you are going to struggle for motivation of going to work when you don’t need to do it for money. I can think of plenty of other things I could do with my time!

AffIt · 29/01/2024 20:29

I really like my job and my colleagues, but there are random things I'd like to do with my short turn on this planet if food and a bed were guaranteed (like learning to play the piano, restoring antique books, planting a Japanese garden, rescuing cats etc).

I have a six-month notice period anyway, so I'd probably extend that to a year and take the time to find and train up a really good replacement (but not too good, so they'd still miss me when I'd gone!) and travel to our global offices to say a proper goodbye.

SouthLondonMum22 · 29/01/2024 20:30

I would. I love what I do, the money is nice of course but it isn't the only reason why I work.

Lizzieregina · 29/01/2024 20:30

I’d invest it conservatively which would probably still give me £50,000 per year without touching the £10m and I’d quit my job immediately.

Im close to retiring age, so that income plus what’s already saved would be enough to live comfortably and help my kids.

PurBal · 29/01/2024 20:30

I’d work my notice.

GOODCAT · 29/01/2024 20:30

Don't need anything like as much as that. I would give up my current job and go and do something useful and have exciting adventures.

Vanillaicepop · 29/01/2024 20:30

I would be leaving the second the money hit my account.

Cas112 · 29/01/2024 20:30

Jesus, how much are you spending a month

Janella · 29/01/2024 20:31

As a PP said, I'd quit because the annual leave policy at my place is too restrictive.

But after my holidays and shopping I would want some kind of structure to my day so yeah maybe I'd work or volunteer or do classes

DuchessNope · 29/01/2024 20:31

I think your maths is off @muchalover

Baircasolly · 29/01/2024 20:32

I've always said I love my job (secondary teacher, independent school, 15 years) and would definitely keep it, albeit probably part-time. But I've had a really shitty year (unachievable expectations from all angles) so I very definitely wouldn't be teaching even part-time if I didn't have to.

This makes me realise that I don't really have to be teaching even now. Being out of school would feel like a lottery win just now tbh.
