If you won the lottery, say.. 10 million. Would you keep working?

A colleague said to me today that the true test of if you like your job is the lottery test, and apparently, this proves most people hate their jobs.

If you won a life changing amount, would you keep your job… if you truly hate your job, you wouldn’t even work your notice.

I think I would go crazy with nothing to do but would like to open a luxury dog hotel 😂 but in terms of my actual job, I would absolutely leave but really like the people so like to think I would work my notice.

How about you?

I don't think I'd quit, but I would go down to PT, maybe three days a week? I know how much the structure of work means to me.

If I was able to travel extensively (allowing for school schedules) I'd maybe quit but definitely work my notice.

inlotsofknots · 29/01/2024 20:33

@Midnightstares I think I need to know what your job is 😂

Hotgirlwinter · 29/01/2024 20:33

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahha

no.

teaandbiscuitsface · 29/01/2024 20:34

No way on earth would I keep working! I would probably work the notice though to avoid the guilt of just walking out!

I'd spend my time doing all the things I don't have time for now - walking, running, swimming, learning new things, cinema etc. Do another postgraduate degree in an area that interests me. And once the kids were older I'd travel, travel, travel.

You'd need more than £10 million for the rest of your life. Unless you were really miserly/careful with it.

Oh don’t be silly. Given that the median salary in this country is around 35k and you could quite comfortably take 400k pa while still maintaining capital, that’s wealth beyond 99% of people’s possible experience.

Dinoland · 29/01/2024 20:34

I'd quit. But then I'd write and paint. I'd never not work.

CaptainCachitoo · 29/01/2024 20:34

first let it be said i love what i do, that said i would retire and focus on my hobbies and self improvement and building my garden plot.

MCOut · 29/01/2024 20:38

With £10 million I would upgrade my lifestyle, but keep working. I don’t think pp is unreasonable, it wouldn’t be enough to stop working for the next couple of decades depending on where you live, and how much family you’d be want to make fairly secure.

Auntieobem · 29/01/2024 20:41

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No

Bessica1970 · 29/01/2024 20:42

I’d absolutely keep working (teaching). I am th most fulfilled I have ever been ( late entrant to teaching) and would absolutely hate my life without the structure and routine.
My DH would want to retire though, so we would be on different paths which could be problematic.

aitchteeaitch · 29/01/2024 20:42

It would be a dilemma for me, as I like my job, I can do it with my eyes shut, it pays well and it is also a family-run business and they are lovely. Best and nicest employers I've ever had,. And it's only part-time.

I've only got 6 years left till retirement anyway.

But £10 million? It would certainly last me out. 😂

Loafbeginsat60 · 29/01/2024 20:42

I do like my job.

But I also like my bed in the mornings....

I would do something, but I wouldn't teach.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 29/01/2024 20:42

No and neither would Dh. 10 million would be plenty for the rest of our lives. Just the interest would be enough.

superplumb · 29/01/2024 20:42

I'd leave in a heartbeat. I'd work doing something else though. Not sure what but I couldn't do nothing even if it was only part time. I could very easily burn though 10 mil though .

Desecratedcoconut · 29/01/2024 20:43

Hell no.

Really? Because currently i earn 12k pa and just about survive

That’s £200k per year for 50 years, or £50k per year for 40 years. Tax free. Plus the accumulated interest on the capital. I certainly could retire very comfortably on that. And I would.

The reality is that I couldn’t continue working. It just wouldn’t happen. One cold, dark winter morning when my alarm went off I would just go ‘nah, fuck that”, turn over, fart loudly & go back to sleep.

MirandaWest · 29/01/2024 20:44

I would stop working straight away.

£200k a year would last you 50 years... Not sure that's particularly miserly?!

Actually, ignore that - even £10 million just shoved in a 5% interest rate account would net you £500k a year! You wouldn't even need to spend the £10m to live off.

Greenchestnut · 29/01/2024 20:50

I'd quit my job for a lot less😂

rookiemere · 29/01/2024 20:52

I'd definitely leave, but I might wait until someone really annoyed me and I could have a massive F-U moment! It would be totally out of character, but I like to think I would manage it.

Really? Would you mind explaining how you calculate it wouldn't last a couple of decades?

As PP have said, you would invest the capital and live off the income. With that kind of amount you could be very diversified and fairly confident that withdrawing 3-4% a year would allow the capital to carry on growing by at least inflation. Essenitally a conservative approach would say you'd be able to live on 3-400k a year (increasing with inflation) whilst maintaining the real value of the capital. Is that really not a secure position?

Luckydog7 · 29/01/2024 20:54

No I wouldn't give up my job as I've only just found my thing. What I would do is expand my little business to the point that I could claim my inflated income was produced via that not a lottery win. Then no-one could be suspicious about me buying a million pound house etc.

Shadowsindarkplaces · 29/01/2024 20:55

I'd be out the door so fast 🏃‍♂️. I don't have expensive tastes day to day, but I'd buy a nice motor home and travel, home and abroad.

weegiemum · 29/01/2024 20:57

Ran this by my dh. He's a GP and employs 8 people in his practice.

His nightmare is that his staff syndicate wins and with a million quid each his nurse, manager, office staff and dispenser decide to quit!
