If you won the lottery, say.. 10 million. Would you keep working?

A colleague said to me today that the true test of if you like your job is the lottery test, and apparently, this proves most people hate their jobs.

If you won a life changing amount, would you keep your job… if you truly hate your job, you wouldn’t even work your notice.

I think I would go crazy with nothing to do but would like to open a luxury dog hotel 😂 but in terms of my actual job, I would absolutely leave but really like the people so like to think I would work my notice.

How about you?

My job is too tying now. It's term time only so no choice whatsoever about when you can have your time off. It's slog your guts out during term time, then collapse during the school holidays and if you want to go anywhere you're stuck with double the cost of anything and double the crowds. No chance of a weekend away unless it's a bank holiday weekend. Well you can, but I'm fed up of arriving somewhere late on a Friday night after everyone else has got there, and having to leave first on Sunday.

My kids are young adults and youngest is hopefully off to uni after A-levels so they will have different term times too. Visiting them during their term time has become a ballache.

I like the people I work with so I'd give my notice in and tell them it was open-ended till they found a suitable replacement. And I'd train them up for nothing too.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 29/01/2024 21:26

Pmsl that within the first few posts " you couldn't live on £10 million for life
I feckin could. I would not work another second.

CeriB82 · 29/01/2024 21:29

Yes id work. I like my job. But its FT and not an option to go PT. Otherwise id work in a supermarket or cafe just for a reason to get up in the morning and chat to people.

Mammyloveswine · 29/01/2024 21:31

Absolutely not! I'm a teacher and as much as it's a vocation... I'd much prefer living life as a milllionaire

You'd need more than £10 million for the rest of your life. Unless you were really miserly/careful with it.

Are you serious?

What?? I'm 43, if I lived another 50 years that would still give me £200,000 per year not including any interest I'd make.

Love to understand your maths! I think you’re talking nonsense.

slashlover · 29/01/2024 21:41

I'd be long gone, they'd be lucky if I handed my keys in on the way to the airport.

I'm currently studying with the OU as I can't afford not to work so I'd go to a proper brick uni as a mature student.

MrsDoubtfire123 · 29/01/2024 21:42

I would leave my job and enjoy my life with £10 million !

Really? Very few people earn that across a lifetime

TheLaughOfRustyLee · 29/01/2024 21:44

I would work 1 or 2 days a week as I love my colleagues and love the social aspect and love the people we engage with

good god, what are you planning on doing?

1m for a nice house, 1m for a few investment properties to pay the upkeep on the nice house, 1m for a few more investment properties to live on.

Unless you're desperate to live in central London, I suppose.

And yes, I would give up my job if I won 1m, never mind 10. (I already have an adequate house.)

Dismaljanuary · 29/01/2024 21:48

I genuinely love my job and the company which I realise is rare.
However I could do more outside it than in it so I would start up lots of research groups and lobby groups.

Jellykat · 29/01/2024 21:48

I'd give up all my shitty cleaning jobs, and just concentrate on the creative work i do

MissingMoominMamma · 29/01/2024 21:50

I would buy something that is currently up for sale for two million, where I could run the business that I currently work in. I would expand what we do there too.

Actually, I'd go back for one last day. I'd probably last less than an hour before being fired for telling the customers EXACTLY what I think of them.

You must be either very highly paid or very bad at basic maths...

Even over a full 40yr career that would be £250k a year, which I'd assume is plenty for 99% of people to live off quite comfortably indeed.

AzureBlue99 · 29/01/2024 21:52

Would I fuck carry on working. No notice will be given.

HouseNoMore · 29/01/2024 21:54

I adore my job, but life is short and if I could afford to not work and just LIVE and experience all the wonderful things this world has to offer I would give up my job tomorrow

Walker1178 · 29/01/2024 21:54

I’d work long enough for them to hire and train a replacement but that’s because I do enjoy my job and consider the small team I’m a part of to be really good friends. I wouldn’t want to leave them on shitty terms. Then I’d sign up for all manner of courses at the local college - I’d be painting in watercolours, silver smithing, cake decorating, flower arranging, learning a new language and god knows what else I could find in the prospectus! 😊

strawberryandtomato · 29/01/2024 21:55

Yes. But on my terms. When I chose too. And way more holiday taken

OctoblocksAssemble · 29/01/2024 21:55

I'm currently stay at home, and going though the hell of retraining. I would absolutely bin all that off. Would maybe look at getting a job once the kids were grown, but before then, nah.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 29/01/2024 22:02

I would quit my job, but would work my notice. I’m an SEN teacher and wouldn’t want to leave the kids. Not sure if I’d work the whole notice period though, depends on time of year, as it can be up to 7 months.

I’d definitely still work on my creative business though. That’s my dream!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 29/01/2024 22:04

I love my job but if I won the lottery they wouldn't see me for dust!

FrangipaniBlue · 29/01/2024 22:05

I'd stay to help find and train my replacement, then I'd probably go back as non-exec director 😂
