Sick to death of dogs

Went to the beach today with dh and dd1.

Got jumped on by a dog off its lead. Owner said "oh. Sorry"

Two dogs ran up to us and started growling and snapping at me and dd who was playing on the sand.

Another dog ran up to us, had no idea what it's intentions were!

All off lead, all owners using their baby voices "don't do that Fido darling!"

Dog shit bags everywhere despite their being loads of bins and even free dog bags!

Absolutely so fed up of entitled dog owners and their nasty little dogs.

Especially the "I like dogs more than humans" suggests those people don't really have any social skills so not surprising that their dogs don't either

That’s a big part of the problem now. Because so many people like their dogs more than other people, which is understandable though, they ascribe rights to their dogs that are above other people’s.

The number of times I had ‘but you have your kids here, so I’m allowed to have my dog here’ / ‘well, if I have to take my dog away, you have to take your kids away’ / ‘why should your kids have more rights than my dog’ / ‘if you put a leash on your kids, I’ll put on on my dog’ conversations. They just couldn’t compute there are different rules for people and dogs AND their dog is also not a super special dog that is exempt from all dog rules. They seriously could not get why kids should be allowed in dog free areas if their dog is not. Or, why their dog could not be off-leash (and wildly out of control) in n an in-leash area if kids didn’t have to wear leashes there. Mind blowing.

muddlingthrou · 29/01/2024 06:52

I trust dogs' judgment over humans'. If they were growling at you, you're probably better avoided...

Moro93 · 29/01/2024 06:53

There is so many overdramatic and exaggerated comments on here!
@bofski14 How exactly is the world becoming ‘closed off’ to you because of more dog friendly places? If you have allergies, take a tablet! If the world is overrun by dogs as people on here suggest then surely you should be taking precautions!
Regardless of places being dog friendly, you could come across a working dog at any time considering they’re allowed everywhere.

And before anyone calls me ‘an entitled dog owner’ yada yada for saying that, should flowers keep out of the way for hayfever sufferers? What about the irresponsible gardeners who continue to plant them! Since dogs are apparently as common as flowers these days.

rainydaysandwednesdays · 29/01/2024 06:55

I agree with you. I think there should be dog parks where owners have to pay to visit which covers the cost of cleaning all the shit up.

A park where I live is covered in dog poo bags, left hanging on trees. The paths are full of poo skid marks.

Years ago it was possible to go to the park, sit on the grass and have a picnic. Now if you go, not only do you have the thought that dogs have been shitting on every inch of the grass that your children are playing on but they actually come over and bother you!

Awful business and is getting worse and worse.

Blueirishrock · 29/01/2024 06:57

This post hits the nail on the head! It really does

I was in a group of people. A couple had a dog with a ‘ friendly dog’ slogan on their lead. Which they explained they got after their dog chased two small children. They, and the other dog owners, them laughed.

So the solution of this absolute numpty, to his dog terrifying and chasing children, was not to train his dog, or even keep it on a lead ( he never on the walk) but simply to buy a slogan none of the kids his dog is frightening will ever read.

And his dog frightening children is funny apparently.

daffodilandtulip · 29/01/2024 06:58

Agree OP. I've started threads before and been disbelieved too.

The latest one that gave me rage was two labs in the toddlers faces, with the usual call of "they're friendly". When I replied that I didn't know that and could he move them out of their face, he turned very nasty and said that he's already told me they were friendly and he didn't need to call them away.

It's a daily occurrence here. Not hyperbole.

Which parks did you go to years ago where dogs didn’t exist? I thought people have always owned dogs and they have to shit somewhere. If anything, people were less inclined to clean it up in the past.

Jifmicroliquid · 29/01/2024 06:59

I’m not sure why the OP is getting such a hard time. I’m a multiple dog owner, but even I think that a lot of dog owners are massively entitled and people have no recall nowadays.

I would be mortified if my dogs annoyed people enjoying the beach. Open spaces are for everyone, and everybody should respect that.

You rather prove @HoppingPavlova ’s point.

So apt your post appears after her’s. Really well illustrates it!

IthinkIamAnAlien · 29/01/2024 07:04

Totally agree OP and with all the similar posts calling out the absurd world of so many entitled dog owners who expect others to meekly accept their smelly, badly behaved poo machines.

Why on earth should anyone feel excluded from a beach with dogs and told not to go there because you mind being jumped on, mind small children being knocked over and frightened, mind the poo and the bags of poo strewn about, mind the dog fights, the arguments between owners, the shreiks of owners at their out of control dogs.
What is wrong with these people that they can't see that forcing their 'fur babies' down other people's throats is plain disrespectful.

taybert · 29/01/2024 07:04

I really like dogs. I don’t have one because mine and my husband’s work patterns mean we can’t be the owners we would want to be, but rest assured I really like them.

But honestly, what the OP is saying is right, there are too many poorly trained dogs with owners who don’t care. The pub near us has been dog friendly forever but has actually banned dogs inside because of the frequent issues they were having and one of their staff getting hurt. Dog friendly has always meant it’s a place for humans where you can also take dogs, not that it’s a place for dogs and they take priority over everyone else.

And of course it’s the owner’s fault not the dog but it’s the fact that they have a dog that causes other people a problem. And even well behaved dogs will upset someone from time to time but if you’re a responsible owner the ONLY response to that is to apologise profusely and make sure the dog is secured and out of their way.

Yep! 😁 So it's perfectly OK for an animal that could seriously harm or kill you to growl at you in a threatening manner. Some people are seriously fked up!

rainydaysandwednesdays · 29/01/2024 07:06

@Moro93 it's the sheer volume of dogs now. The park is full of them! Years ago you'd see one or two. Now the place is crawling with dogs. More dogs = more shit. Like PP said, it's an environmental disaster.

SwordToFlamethrower · 29/01/2024 00:48

I don't care what you believe. These things happened.

This particular beach is a magnet for dog walkers. They outnumber non dog walkers.

So find another beach or best still stay in your garden

sandgrown · 29/01/2024 07:08

A local new restaurant has started to allow dogs in . I guess it’s to try and increase business. I don’t agree with it from a hygiene point of view . I went in last week and there was a very well behaved dog sat under the table . Not a problem until a couple came in with a dog that they let approach the other dog which reacted and all hell broke loose. The owners of the well behaved dog decided to leave without finishing their meal. This wasn’t daytime but 8.30 at night . Who needs to take their dog on a “date”

I do wish dogs were kept on a lead. I don’t particularly mind them, I just don’t want them in my space.

Took my DD out to play football on a local Astro pitch with her new football from Christmas and a bloody Collie ran up and burst the ball! Not even an apology from the owner. Annoying

I was sitting at a park on a seat at a picnic bench when a dog ran up, lifted itself on its hind legs at the table and ate my four years lunch from right in front of him. Owner did come up but never even apologized, let alone offer to buy him another lunch. He did see what his dog had done and looked embarrassed, but no apology or money to buy more food

I was at at another group where a dog owner actually blamed people having picnics for the fact dogs ate their lunch, saying it was all their own fault and of course passing dogs will eat their food.

The idea that if her dog is not trained not to do this, it should be on a lead did not appear to have occurred to her.

sleepyscientist · 29/01/2024 07:09

Go to a different beach if you don't like it! We take our dog to one beach but if he was at home we would choose a different one as we are looking for a different day out. Kids seem to attract dogs we often get "bothered" as DS is awwwing at the cute puppy, spaniel or fluffy thing.

Perfect recall is just that perfect recall, it doesn't mean a dog that doesn't approach anyone or anything it means a dog that comes back afterwards even if it doesn't want to.

muddlingthrou · 29/01/2024 07:11

@Blueirishrock - yes, you're right, my response was a bit unnecessary, apologies to the OP.

I think I'm just frustrated because there's a lack of proportion in the original post. Yes, there are some REALLY unreasonable dog owners who don't train their dogs and let them run around uncontrolled. There are also parents who don't teach their children how to act around dogs and just on public, generally.

I'm both a parent and a dog owner, and I've come across the full range of unreasonable and reasonable people. People who let their kids pull my dog's tail and are horrified when my dog growls in response. Others that let their dog poo anywhere and everywhere and don't pick it up 🤦🏽‍♀️ but also the vast, vast majority that are just trying their best to coexist.

There are so many anti-dog threads on here already that it does get a bit wearing.

Yerroblemom1923 · 29/01/2024 07:11

@YeOldeGreyhound have you ever been to a beach? I can 100% believe all this happened.

thechangling · 29/01/2024 07:12

Not everyone thinks dogs are fur babies, like some dog owners do. Not everyone likes being jumped on by an overexcited dog. Not everyone likes having their privates sniffed by a dog. It's some owners that are the problem, who have badly trained dogs, who seem to believe they should be allowed to get away with anything. I wouldn't have liked that either OP. YANBU

Blueirishrock · 29/01/2024 07:13

hattie43 · 29/01/2024 07:07

Here’s another one. Rather than dog owners training their dogs, or keeping them on leads if they don’t want to do this, people should avoid anti-social dog owners by staying at home.

God @HoppingPavlova really did nail it!

MinnieMountain · 29/01/2024 07:15

Maybe it was the only beach a reasonable distance away from OP?

The worst I had recently was walking along a river bank. A medium sized dog came charging towards me barking. Owner shouts “she doesn’t like strangers”. Keep her on a lead in public then 🙄

AndThatWasNY · 29/01/2024 07:16

RaisinRainbow · 29/01/2024 03:26

Agree that a dog friendly beach should not mean a less safe or enjoyable experience for the dog-free. But it's not the same as entering say a dog-exercise area. I regularly have my walks ( coastal) and otherwise marred by dogs off lead jumping up at me. It can be very distressing, particularly if the dogs are large or persistent. It's appalling to be gas-lit by owners protesting, ' they're just being friendly.' Sadly I've learnt better than to challenge this anti-social behaviour as it tends to provoke a torrent of denial and abuse. And yeah, those filled and knotted dog poo bags are a disgusting blight. Yeah I know this is a minority of dog owners but it's nonetheless significant enough to be a real and on going issue. So don't call me a hater or a moaner. My experience is real and valid and clearly I am not alone.

"my experience is real and valid" is such an awful phrase. Do people actually speak like this?

FingerLickingGod · 29/01/2024 07:18

I hate dogs too. Sick of seeing them everywhere all the time.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 29/01/2024 07:19

I really wish more stringent dog ownership rules would come in. If dog ownership was made as inconvenient and expensive as possible it would sort the nob heads from the responsible owners. You see the many posts on here where people are turned down by rescues, I agree for silly reasons sometimes but often it’s because they just aren’t suitable owners so what do they do? Go and buy a puppy! Why do they need a dog right that second? It’s mostly for instant gratification without a thought for the next 10+ years or all of the work needed to not be a dick head dog owner
