Sick to death of dogs

SwordToFlamethrower · 29/01/2024 00:23

Went to the beach today with dh and dd1.

Got jumped on by a dog off its lead. Owner said "oh. Sorry"

Two dogs ran up to us and started growling and snapping at me and dd who was playing on the sand.

Another dog ran up to us, had no idea what it's intentions were!

All off lead, all owners using their baby voices "don't do that Fido darling!"

Dog shit bags everywhere despite their being loads of bins and even free dog bags!

Absolutely so fed up of entitled dog owners and their nasty little dogs.

I don't believe that all those particular things happened to you in one day.

You are either very unlucky or lying.

Why would she be lying? I believe her. Dogs are everywhere

Did you think my post was dog hating @Manyandyoucanwalkover

Or are you an irresponsible dog owner?

I wasn’t replying to you.

Nah, they are not. MN posters will have you believe that their toddlers get knocked down like skittles every time they leave the house.
Or if they are a jogger, they get harassed by dogs every single time they are out.
Or if they are in a dog friendly cafe, every single dog is snapping at the other dogs.
It is all hyperbole.

DiscoBeat · 29/01/2024 01:45

Fido. Ok.

I love dogs , all the dogs, but I make sure my dogs are always on their lead , pick up my dog shit and dispose of the bags in my bin and don't expect anyone else to feel the same way as I do

Ugh. I used to go to a beach that's become dog-friendly. I have had so many bad experiences, I've stopped going. My friend's child, age 2, was badly bitten there just last week and ended up in hospital. Actually police took it very seriously and are reviewing cctv etc. But shouldn't be like this. There seems to be an epidemic of badly behaved dogs in my area, with owners who say "oh, they're just being friendly". There's too many no-go areas for me now.

TheaBrandt · 29/01/2024 02:28

Sorry it seems to be that some are saying if you opt to go to a beach popular with dog owners you basically “deserve what you get”?! That dog friendly beaches means dogs are entitled to mar the enjoyment of the public that go there? That surely can’t be right?

haha do you you all remember the lady that was livid because a dog weed on a large rock on the beach she'd eyed up for sitting on😂

lavenderlou · 29/01/2024 01:22

Only took three posts for someone to come on and spout that dogs are better than kids! As if there was even any comparison.

Nothing more annoying than entitled dog owners who think their mutt's right to run around at will is above the right of humans to walk undisturbed in a public place. Keep your dog on a lead if it's going to approach people uninvited.

Absolutely!

Peanutsforthebluetit · 29/01/2024 03:09

Surely if you know it’s a magnet for dogs and you don’t like dogs, go to a different beach ?🙄

It’s common sense !

RaisinRainbow · 29/01/2024 03:26

Agree that a dog friendly beach should not mean a less safe or enjoyable experience for the dog-free. But it's not the same as entering say a dog-exercise area. I regularly have my walks ( coastal) and otherwise marred by dogs off lead jumping up at me. It can be very distressing, particularly if the dogs are large or persistent. It's appalling to be gas-lit by owners protesting, ' they're just being friendly.' Sadly I've learnt better than to challenge this anti-social behaviour as it tends to provoke a torrent of denial and abuse. And yeah, those filled and knotted dog poo bags are a disgusting blight. Yeah I know this is a minority of dog owners but it's nonetheless significant enough to be a real and on going issue. So don't call me a hater or a moaner. My experience is real and valid and clearly I am not alone.

I love dogs but that doesn't excuse the fact that there are many shitty dog owners out there, and some of them have no business owning dogs.

Toomanylosthours · 29/01/2024 03:50

OP, I think your anger and annoyance are misdirected. Your dislike and rage should be towards inconsiderate and incompetent owners of these dogs.

I have 2 dogs. 1 has good recall. He is allowed off lead (rarely) if we are in an environment where there's no other dogs, children, traffic, etc. The 2nd dog has terrible recall, is a bit reactive, and isn't allowed off lead. Both are on short leashes when walked. We step aside on pavements, and they wait for others to pass (mostly without an element of gratitude).

As I know my dogs reactive, I avoid taking him to fields, beaches, etc, where he may encounter a lot of off lead dogs that may approach him. Why do you take your child to a beach you know to be busy with dogs?

Yep, I’m surprised they didn’t eat her DD’s homework!

next time it happens be very stern and serious with the owners and tell them to keep their dogs under control as per the dangerous dogs legislation which applies to all breeds of dogs. it’s bad enough when it happens to me as an adult but I think it’s awful when it happens to children.

I do sympathise it has really got worse in the past decade….a few examples of my experiences in the last 6 months alone .

I took a 3 hour train journey and on both the outwards and return journey there were dogs in my carriage. On one journey the owner decided to let her dog walk up and down the aisle unleashed which is against the train rules. I was had a bag of Christmas food presents on the floor so had to quickly move that out its way in case.

And on the way back this jack russell was on a leash but it was long enough so it could still stand in the aisle and cross over and bother other people who all tried to ignore it. It came into my seat space so I had to put my legs up and told it to go. The owner turned and said sorry are you scared? I said I don’t want your dog in my space.

She moved her dog onto the seat next to her (gross) for two minutes and then let it come back down as she was too busy on her phone not paying attention and it was bothering me again.

Eventually I just grabbed my stuff and moved carriages, luckily there was no dogs in there. I was carrying luggage as well and had to pointedly asked her to move her dog out my way so I could get out. She clearly expected me to step over her dog and no doubt if it had bitten me I’d have got the blame for stepping over it.

I was barked, and lunged at on a Coastal path walk in autumn by two dogs that were pulling hard at the owners harness. It did kind of put me on edge for the rest of the walk.

I was on holiday recently in a European city and I was looking forward to checking out this breakfast cafe. As soon as I stepped in a dog approached me and wouldn’t leave me alone. I had to ask the staff to get it away from me. The daft owner was sat around the corner in the cafe. I immediately just left and found somewhere else to eat.

I actively avoid parks so I don’t need to deal with dogs as much but they’re everywhere nowadays!

Don’t even get me started on the dog poo…

It does seem like dogs freeroam in the UK. In Australia, dogs are absolutely not allowed on public transport at all unless it is a service dog, wearing a service dog vest which states 'Service Dog', and on a harness. It's not just health and safety, people are allergic to dogs/animals so animals cannot legally be on a train or bus. Dogs also are never allowed off-leash in public unless it's a signposted dog park.

Also cats need to be kept in their yard or inside only. Some people if a dog or cat enters their yard will take it to the pound and the owner has pay to get dog/cat released.

Moro93 · 29/01/2024 04:08

I’m starting to get convinced that MN has a lot of posters that are just highly evolved cats!

echt · 29/01/2024 04:14

Except they didn't say dogs are better than children. They said they found other people's children more annoying than dogs.

Not at all what you claim.

echt · 29/01/2024 04:37

That was in reply to @confusedbythesystem 's post at 2.39. approving of@lavenderlou 's post.

I don't care what you believe. These things happened.

This particular beach is a magnet for dog walkers. They outnumber non dog walkers.

Sound like you should go to a different beach?

Herbiebanannas · 29/01/2024 04:53

Some of the replies here really back up what OP is saying. Dog owners can be very entitled when it comes to their “fur babies” 🤮

People saying go to another beach, calling her angry etc are the ones who need to take a step back and realise they are the ones with the problem. People should be able to go about their day without being jumped on or sniffed.

We have had a number of days out tarnished by stupid dog owners not keeping their mutts under control, including having food taken off a picnic rug and out of the kids hands.

Australia sounds like they have it right. Keep dogs out of public places and only allow them off lead in designated areas.

(Owner of two dogs, and awaiting some hilarious individual to tell me to relocate my family to the other side of the world)

If you’re telling the truth then I feel sorry for your dogs.

The thing I don’t understand is how dogs seem to ‘target’ people who dislike/hate them? Why don’t they approach all the dog lovers? Amazing!
