Glasses wearers. How often do you clean them each day and how to get them grease free?

I’m really struggling with my glasses. I seem to be needing to clean them every five minutes. Even when I’ve cleaned them I can still see greasy patches when I check them, no matter how thorough I’ve been. I use cleaner spray and one of the special cloths, which is new and clean but I still feel I spend most of my day looking through a haze. I’ve stopped wearing eye makeup and only use eye cream at bedtime.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

I clean them on my t-shirt occasionally when I realise I've touched them. Never use the special wipes or cleaning solutions. Don't wear makeup, moisturise a couple of times a week and don't use hair products, never thought to link it to that!

I keep my glasses in the bathroom when I shower. Afterward, when they're all steamed up, wipe them clean with your towel.

Savers have a box of 99(?) lens wipes for either 50p or £1. I clean my glasses and then the mirrors so as not to waste the rest of the wipe.

Mine need doing a few times a week. I’m careful to never touch the lenses though.

I have an ultrasonic cleaner at work that I put my glasses in (with some optical solution) maybe a couple of times a week, definitely not every day.

I find I need to fairy liquid mine sometimes. Cooking in them causes lots of grease

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/01/2024 19:37

Despite knowing I should not due to coatings. The best thing I find is washing up liquid and a good dunking in warm water. Gets all the grot off. I tend to keep frames for a decade or more. I attract dirt like a magnet - but I am in housekeeping/laundry.
Dh has some lens wipes which he swears by, but his glasses always look a bit grim after a year and need fully replacing.

edit to add both clean our glasses daily.

I use a baby muslin cloth...works a treat!

VesperLind · 28/01/2024 19:41

I clean mine half a dozen times a day- it’s a habit as much as anything. I buy a big chamois leather cloth and cut it into appropriately sized pieces which I have to hand all over the house, in my specs cases, pencil case, handbags etc.
I find that to be the best de-greaser.

BettyBakesCakes · 28/01/2024 19:41

I'm sure they put something on them these days that means you have to use cleaning stuff. Years ago a quick rub in your t shirt and all was fine. Now it just smears stuff around. I even find proper cleaning cloths rarely cut it these days.

TheMidnightLibrary · 28/01/2024 19:41

Thanks everyone. The smudges are definitely on the inside, so it’s probably my eyelashes, which do touch the lenses even though they are short.
I have used water with Fairy in a couple of times, so that may have damaged to coating as well.

How do people go so long without cleaning them? Mine get dusty overnight whilst I'm asleep.

Just a question (I'm not trying to hijack thread) Does anyone accidently get into the shower wearing their glasses ? Maybe it's just me 🤔.

Yes occasionally and then I realise because I can see the soap instead of having to feel for it! Then they steam up and all is lost.

My daughter pointed out to me that she saw me cleaning my glasses three or more times a day. I realised I was cleaning them very often. Turns out, I had cataracts in both eyes.

donteatthedaisies0 · 28/01/2024 19:47

@Dontdeclutterthemagic Phew I'm glad not just me then . I do feel a bit foolish when I do it .

Well this is a great thread as I never knew about washing up liquid as a cleaner. I just get frustrated with mine currently and rub them on my t shirt !

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/01/2024 20:16

@donteatthedaisies0 minor league! Have got in the shower with glasses on ….and socks! I often forget things like hair bobbles, and watches. An eccentric air of distraction don’t cha know!!

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 28/01/2024 20:39

I use hand sanitizer- works like glass cleaner and seems to keep them clean for longer than anything else I've tried

I have long thick hair so not every shower is a hair wash shower. I keep my glasses on if I don't want to wash my hair, so that I don't forget and put my head under the water just out of habit.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/01/2024 20:43

I intentionally get in the shower with glasses on - can't see to shave my legs or find the soap if I don't!

I just run them under the hot water and flick the water off when they steam up.

WonderingWanda · 28/01/2024 19:13

Another one who uses washing up liquid or hand wash and a hot tap whenever they get too grim.

I do the same. I also have the wipes and a glass cloth that I use out and about.

Paw2024 · 28/01/2024 20:46

These are the best cloths I've found
