Glasses wearers. How often do you clean them each day and how to get them grease free?

I’m really struggling with my glasses. I seem to be needing to clean them every five minutes. Even when I’ve cleaned them I can still see greasy patches when I check them, no matter how thorough I’ve been. I use cleaner spray and one of the special cloths, which is new and clean but I still feel I spend most of my day looking through a haze. I’ve stopped wearing eye makeup and only use eye cream at bedtime.
Can anyone offer any suggestions please?

Constantly with a lens cloth (I have about 15 in my bedside drawer and wash them regularly) glasses spray when I remember or its got quite bad.

I don’t often clean mine, maybe 2-3 times a week, and that’s on a cotton tshirt. And it’s only when I notice they’re filthy. Mine are often quite marked.

cardibach · 28/01/2024 21:00

Rarely. A bit of huffing and t-shirt wiping from time to time. Very occasional lens cleaning wipes. Your eyelashes shouldn’t be touching them surely? If they are fitted right?

@cardibach ideally no they shouldn’t. But humans come in all shapes and sizes with quirky bits added.

My eyelashes, if I wear mascara will hit my glasses, but to wear the glasses further down my nose will mean a different prescription, plus they will be sitting in the fleshy dippy bit of the nose - so will be sore behind my ears and risk falling off. (My solution is half rimmed readers from the 1950s).
Dh eyebrows are all Dennis healey like and they scratch his lenses if he forgets to trim them. Which he does forget to do regularly because he’s more likely to wear diesel and engine oil rather than invest in personal grooming behind soap and water.

The optician told me not to use washing up liquid as it damages the coating and never kitchen roll as it can scratch. If you need to get fingerprints off, use the alcohol based wipes or spray as it will dissolve the oils, and a microfibre cloth to polish it up.

noobiedoobie · 22/11/2024 07:54

Interesting as just started wearing my glasses more. I hate smudges lol. I do glasses spray about 3 times a day. Not practical though.

BettyBardMacDonald · 22/11/2024 08:08

Wipes are so bad for the environment.

Washing up liquid & tea towels at home; hot water and a clean handkerchief on the go.

I find washing up liquid the most effective

My optician told me that washing up liquid is likely to damage the coating. I use a microfiber cloth (DH gets multi packs for cleaning the car) which is really effective for getting the smears off.

coffeesaveslives · 22/11/2024 08:12

You shouldn't really use things like towels or fairy liquid as it can destroy the lenses and the coating that's on them. I learnt this the hard way when a pair of mine ended up really badly scratched.

I use a cleaning spray from Amazon and the cloth that came with my glasses when I bought them. I just give them a wipe over every morning and again if I've been caught in the rain etc.

Neolara · 22/11/2024 08:17

I used washing up liquid once on my very expensive varifocals and it completely ruined them. The lens coating began to come off which made it difficult to see. Was a very expensive mistake.

I work in optical tecnology.

Just huff them and use a soft tissue.

OldBeyondMyYears · 22/11/2024 08:22

I use baby muslin cloths - they come up a treat! I carry a snipped off square of muslin in my glasses case.

Just a question (I'm not trying to hijack thread) Does anyone accidently get into the shower wearing their glasses ? Maybe it's just me 🤔.

Not accidentally, it's the only way I can see to shave.

How do people avoid touching them? Mine are on the bedside table at night but because I can only vaguely see their outline it is virtually impossible to avoid accidentally touching a lens when I pick them up. Same with my driving pair, it's hard getting them out of the case without accidentally touching a lens and the arms fold in very flat so its hard to avoid touching a lens when you fold and unfold them.

I've scratched lenses using paper products.

I read a different thread on here where someone recommended using an old fashioned cotton hankie for cleaning (with specs cleaner spray), since doing that I rarely clean my glasses - it's gone from daily to over a fortnight. No idea why unless it's something to do with coatings on our clothes like soft rinse etc.

I think that if you have been lucky enough not to need glasses until middle age problems kick in, part of the difficulty is intolerance and frustration at any tiny hint of a smudge.
I still feel furious about it, even though I've been wearing glasses for about 10 years now. I thought they would restore me to perfect vision, but really they just minimise one set of problems at the cost of adding another, minor, set of problems.
If your sight is awful, the trade-off is fine, but if you are correcting relatively minor problems then even small smeariness feels like a reason to fling them off and trample them.
I pretty much need glasses for all purposes now, not just for reading, but I still take them off when I walk the dog because it feels so horrible to have them intruding between me and the bright beautiful day. Like I am walking around in a box and looking out of a window.

Crinkle77 · 22/11/2024 08:34

My glasses drive me mad. Have to clean them 2/3 times a day. And I try not to touch them so don't know how they end up so mucky. Don't wear makeup either so it's not that.

RosieFlamingo · 22/11/2024 08:35

Zeiss lens wipes work really well. They're on sale at the moment too on amazon. A box of 200 lasts about 6 months ish.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 22/11/2024 08:38

I only occasionally clean mine and mostly to get dust off. Just my breath and whatever I am wearing. I have worn them since childhood and most of the time am oblivious to them so I don't think I really touch them so they don't get greasy.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/11/2024 08:45

Zeiss lens wipes. Occasionally will wash with hand wash and warm water and gently dry on something non-scratchy. No washing up liquid if you have coatings! It is designed to strip coatings off (non-ionic surfactants and all that). If it's gak in the nose pads a cotton bud dipped in soapy water will get that off.

Ididntsaybanana · 22/11/2024 08:49

Once in the morning with a lens wipe or under the tap with washing-up liquid then multiple times a day on my tshirt when i get splashes on them

I've been wearing contacts for 40 years (I am extremely short-sighted) but have always worn glasses some of the time at home, I don't mind if these are not perfectly clean, mine are about 10 years old and falling to bits, one of the reasons I haven't rushed to replace them is that it doesn't matter what I wipe them with, the coatings are long gone. But now I need night time driving glasses over the top and every smudge shows, they never come into the house so I use wipes but it is a real pain, you are about to drive off, in the dark, when you realise there's yet another smudge, they also steam up when the weather is cold.
