I beat the Lidl cashier

Today was a momentous day. Today I finally beat the Lidl cashier. He tried his best but I was there, ready and waiting to pay with all my bags properly and neatly packed while he sorted out the final till stuff.

Do I now get to move on to the next level?

I did it today! I mentioned this thread to him and he s aid they have been asked to make it better for customers, since the pandemic, and not go so fast. Rather took the edge of this minor retail victory!

It's my favourite challenge on Saturdays, though somewhat ruined by the lovely young and very chatty cashier who is just not that fast! Less sense of achievement than the ex assistant manager who was speedy Gonzales on that till (but fair play to him, he's now a branch manager of a new bigger branch!)

The trick is lining your shopping up in the right order in the first place and sending dp back to fetch loo rolls or similar so he doesn't get in the way! Love him but he's too slow at packing.

The idea with Lidl and Aldi is to put things back into trolley/basket and pack it on the side that is provided for you . I lived in Switzerland for years and shopping is very quick as they have had this system for years and everybody does it . Unlike here in uk where we all try to beat the cashier !!

I think you live in London. Now we’ve moved I’ve noticed the cashiers are slow and the beat the cashier game is no fun no more.

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/02/2024 09:02

Yep I do. However quicker cashiers are evened out by general London fuckery - there is alway some kind of drama in our Lidl.

We did it a few years ago with a big shop and the cashier announced, "Ooh that was fun!" as she totalled up. We worked up a bit of a sweat though!

As I keep saying. How is it quicker to chuck into an empty trolley than to chuck it into open trolley bags in the trolley? I’m no more trying to beat the cashier than the shelf people - I just don’t then clog up the end of the shop (which is never wide enough) repacking stuff.

Trolley bags, game changer

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 04/02/2024 13:51

I worked in a supermarket when I was a teenager and was trained in proper bag packing. I have the bags open and ready in the trolley and I put the shopping in a particular order. I have been complimented on my organisation and packing skills 😊 Sad, I know. I always beat the Aldi cashier

Precisely, and this is why I hate it when I have to pack in a hurry if I visit other supermarkets. Using the Lidl/Aldi system means I can pack at my leisure so that shopping doesn't get squashed, after I have got out of the staff member's and subsequent customers' way.

Why on earth do people try to force their expectations from other supermarkets into a situation that is designed for a better system and does not have any space for shopping at the till after the cashier has processed it? At least in LIDL - the refurbished Aldi here seems to have redesigned to have the best/worst of both worlds - a tiny packing space at the till.

It's easy , stuff goes into the trolley and ths onto the conveyer belt in categories eg: Cupboard, fridge, fruit and veg, non eats. Then into open bags in the trolley at the other end in the same way.
Bags open before starting to shop.

IChangedForThis · 05/02/2024 07:37

I made the mistake once of using a pull along basket instead of a trolley in Lidl. I loaded the conveyer, stacked my basket, then realized I would have to bag my items as they come down.
I was exhausted by the time I'd finished bending up and down to my bag several times.
The cashier looked at me and said ' deep breaths ' once I'd finished.

Nannygoat151 · 05/02/2024 11:28

See you don’t. What you are supposed to do is it it back in basket and pack on the side which is put there for this purpose 👍🏻

MiddleOfHere · 10/02/2024 18:20

The number of people getting bent out of shape because others are packing at the till at the same pace as the cashier is scanning in Aldi and Lidl on this thread is wild.
If a customer can pack that quickly (which isn't even all that difficult) then it has literally zero impact on the queue of customers behind.
