I beat the Lidl cashier

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2024 13:33

Today was a momentous day. Today I finally beat the Lidl cashier. He tried his best but I was there, ready and waiting to pay with all my bags properly and neatly packed while he sorted out the final till stuff.

Do I now get to move on to the next level?

Whatever happened to customer service? How is forcing staff to speedscan helping anyone? It's no quicker in the long run as people spend ages scrabbling around after all their stuff has been chucked in a big pile at the end of the conveyer belt.

When you're in a hurry though... I've been in Waitrose watching the people in front of me have a long chat about their leg, or their Cressida's wedding, boiling because I have to be somewhere.

Give me efficiency over personal service 90% of the time.

MyselfYouselfMeYou · 28/01/2024 15:59

@OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon
Is the speedscan rate got something to do with the reason why the checkout staff don't start scanning until you have all of your shopping on the converyor belt. It seem strange that so many wait until you've unpacked everything even when you are short of space and it would be helpful if they start.

They seem to do it even when I'm shopping with someone else who is ready and waiting to pack.

mrswhiplington · 28/01/2024 16:03

In my Aldi the cashiers are too busy shouting over to each other about what they got upto the night before to worry about working at speed. They all love a good chat with the customers as well. I think they're related to half of them.😃

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 28/01/2024 16:04

But you're supposed to pack at the shelf? I'll bet they had to slow down to allow you to do it which then impact's negatively on their stats.

Rhombus79 · 28/01/2024 16:06

Beating a Lidl cashier in Germany would be the next challenge, they are on a completely different level!

Nope. You just have to have your bags ready in the trolley. It's not rocket science

3luckystars · 28/01/2024 16:16

Or have those big trolley bags open and ready to go.

My goal is to spend as little time as possible in a supermarket. I don’t want chat, I just want my stuff as quickly as possible!

like others, I find it’s a fun game. It’s the reason Aldio own brand barcodes are so enormous, makes stuff easy to scan.

ODFOx · 28/01/2024 16:20

I always beat the cashier in Aldi and Lidl. I don't shop at either weekly though.
I pack my trolley as I go round so that I can load the conveyer belt in the correct order. I also have the fabric bags with rods so they hang open across the trolley. First (biggest bag) gets filled first and dropped into the trolley, then the next and so on. Then unroll the next set if required and fill on top. It's the most exercise I ever get in a 3 minute burst and I spend twice the time in the shop that I would otherwise, purely in order to prepare for and win a race that my opponent is unaware of. 😁

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 28/01/2024 16:24

@MyselfYouselfMeYou

Yes, at ASDA you are ' allowed ' to scan the 1st 6 items, then you have to wait.
Then you can scan 6 more.

But now you have 12 items waiting to be packed. ( not good ) and the customer is still loading the shopping onto the belt.

and the check out person has had to hit the ' total ' button twice ( not good ) as hitting the total button stops your scan speed, you are not ' allowed ' to keep stopping your scan speed.
The idea is you scan the whole shop.

However, it is ' permitted ' to ' total ' to allow time to remove the security tag off the alcohol, my manager has also said it is just about permitted to ' total ' to allow time to take clothing off hangers / remove the security tag.

Next time you go to a supermarket, have a look at your receipt and see how many ' subtotals ' there are on the receipt. Then you will know how often the person stopped their scan speed.

My dh silently plays this game every time we go to Aldi😂
He doesn't Like to waste time packing on the packing shelf so he tries to beat he cashier every time ,he's quite accomplished now
He also plays he game of rounding everything up.to the nearest pound ,he's never more Than a pound or two out .

my husband also plays this game honestly it makes his day if he wins 😃

Op well done I always just pack my trolly and wheel it away Aldi staff scare me !

LilacpointMummy · 28/01/2024 16:28

V impressive OP!

My DD and I have it down to a fine art - we spend our own sweet time unpacking the trolley on to the belt and group it in household/fridge/freezer/food cupboard and designate a trolley bag for each.

Then we just fill up each trolley bag and are always done in time.

If DH comes to 'help' instead of DD, the whole system falls apart 😆

Trez1510 · 28/01/2024 16:42

The only time I've 'beaten' a Lidl cashier is if I've only popped in for five items or less.

However, I was once told by a Sainsburys cashier I had the most neatly packed bags she'd ever seen, and noted they were packed in the order they'd be unpacked at home - fridge, freezer, food cupboard, and household cupboard.

It was a proud day to have my 'special talent' recognised by a professional!!

NB - I never let the scouts or whomever pack my bags, I give a massive donation to prevent them doing so - eggs with bleach, pasta with veggies, soap with bread? Not. On. My. Watch.

Thank for the reply. That's interesting. I was thinking it was vpbecause they wanted a wee break 😅

2021mumma · 28/01/2024 16:46

Love playing “beat the cashier”, level 2 = pack your bags whilst taking a phone call!

Next you are going to tell us your conditioner ran out at the exact same time as your shampoo.

Ha!

As if this happened!!

Same here! I'm calling troll post ;)

Desdemona44 · 28/01/2024 16:53

I find that bags with good structural integrity that stand up and stay open on their own, a strong and stable hessian fabric, are a game changer. I put anything retangular on the conveyer belt first and speed tetris it in, fruit and veg all together in another. Floppy plastic bags for life hold one back in the supermarket and in life. A good bag is akin to a good bra.

CalmAfterTheStorms · 28/01/2024 16:57

Time is money for supermarkets, almost all of the jobs are timed, they work the night team like slaves at our one.

HippyCritical · 28/01/2024 16:58

This is a good thread, it's like the modern day "I found a list!".

SingingSands · 28/01/2024 16:58

The only time I can do this is if I take an ikea blue bag and chick everything into it.

Which backfires immediately because I can't then lift it out and into the car boot 😆

kitsuneghost · 28/01/2024 17:02

EarthlyNightshade · 28/01/2024 13:37

Well done.
You need to create a cheat sheet for people like me who end up putting litres of milk on top of crisps and free range chicken - and that's only bag 2!

This.
Were they all in the proper bags?

kitsuneghost · 28/01/2024 17:04

Our Aldi staff are so slow (except 1 older woman). I am always left waiting for the next item. So jealous of everyone with quick cashiers.

Perhaps the real trick would be to reverse your car through the doors and back it up to the end of the till, so you can open the boot and the cashier can just chuck the stuff straight in!

Damnloginpopup · 28/01/2024 17:11

I'm going to lidl tomorrow now, challenge accepted. Never knew this game...

Do you guys also play 'the game'?
