I beat the Lidl cashier

Today was a momentous day. Today I finally beat the Lidl cashier. He tried his best but I was there, ready and waiting to pay with all my bags properly and neatly packed while he sorted out the final till stuff.

Do I now get to move on to the next level?

I'm ready to pay most of the time at the same time my last item is going through. I upload my shopping on belt with roughly what'll be packed together and a few light things at the end that can just be quickly put on top. Lidl app open for when it's my turn and credit card in pocket to save having to look for it.

You seem to be missing the point. "We" are sorting the shopping into the right bags in the same time as if we'd just shoved it all back into the trolley. No one is held up and the cashiers still scan at their normal speed.

Exactly! Personally, me and DH actually chuck everything in the trolley, (well place it really!) and then wheel the trolley out to the car, and then just pack the stuff into a big box, and a couple of cool bags in the boot.

Never packed it straight into bags in the trolley, but have no problem with people who do, and actually quite admire them for their precision, skill, and speed. 😁

I've gone for jobs at Aldi, it's terrifying

400 scans per 15 minutes, so an hour's worth is 1600 scans, they are electronically monitored and if they are idle, they have to log out and start shelf stacking or warehousing.

Failure to achieve the scan targets can result in not passing you probation and having to leave.

Yes my friend worked in Aldi and told me that similar rules apply to stocking shelves, you have 8 minutes to emphasise fruit box etc.

(it wasn’t 8 minutes, it was less, like 1.2 minutes) so you see the cashiers are practicing constantly with the speed, we are just doing it once a week, to beat them is really impressive.

3luckystars · 29/01/2024 10:53

Empty the fruit box sorry.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/01/2024 11:00

I don't have a car so am ninja level at packing bags quickly and efficiently for weight and distribution.

The packing shelf people cause more hassle in our Lidl as they mither around, block the exit and generally are a PITA.

Oh well, that's ok then. Be that person

If you can pack as quickly as the cashier can scan then there is no impact on the queue (or on Aldi/Lidl profit margins)

Punxsatawnyphil · 30/01/2024 00:08

Well done OP 🏆
I'm not bad at Lidl, it takes me longer to open up my Lidl app on my phone though, what a faff.
The odd time I go shopping at Morrisons, I'm so shocked at how slow and chatty they are.

Yes, well done you with that nugget of 'logic'
I can drive at 130mph, it's illegal, but if the feds can keep up with me to arest me, faircenough.

quantumbutterfly · 30/01/2024 07:35

Grincoming soon...speed limits at the checkout.

How is that in any way similar?

quantumbutterfly · 30/01/2024 08:16

Apparently speed packing is a potential death trap.

StarlightLady · 30/01/2024 09:01

OP, your prize is that you can go in front of me at the supermarket. I hate it when l’m behind someone at the checkout, when as their last item goes through, they looked shocked that you have to pay and start fumbling for their purse or cards.

3luckystars · 30/01/2024 09:47

Worse in Ireland, we have Dunnes vouchers, you get €10 off if you spend €50. So if someone spends €90, they run off from the till, down the shop to get more items so they can get their €10 off.
They could be gone for 5 or 10 minutes!!

Once I was stuck behind a woman who completely disappeared, then strolled back AGES later with about €40 more things and then went off again.

Everyone was so annoyed, all my frozen things were melting and I was trapped. All you can do is tut.

It is similar because I am making the point that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. So, I can drive at 130mpg, I amy outrun the police, but it doesn't mean I should
Alsi/Lidl have a specific regimen - the packing in the packing area - in order to keep prices down and allow staff to be fully flexible (jumping from till to stacking etc)
So, one 'speed-packer' may well think they are brilliant, but only needs a small hiccough to fuck it up and hold everyone up

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/01/2024 09:55

Hardly anyone uses the packing area in our Lidl. Miraculously it still seems to be fine.

OP posts:
3luckystars · 30/01/2024 10:11

I’ve never seen anyone use the packing area at Lidl.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 30/01/2024 10:19

A good bag is akin to a good bra.

My new life motto. It is so true. Give me a proper jute bag any day.
But not a jute bra. That might be scratchy.

It isn't similar at all so it is a shit comparison. It doesn't make any kind of point.

You shouldn't speed because it's illegal and dangerous. Unlike packing at the same speed as you'd just dump things in your trolley, which is neither illegal nor dangerous.

PlumpAndGrump · 30/01/2024 11:15

I don't know why we're comparing packing your shopping at Lidl to a high speed federal police car chase BUT I do know that the secret to this is to place your shopping on the conveyer belt in the order you want to pack it. So all frozen stuff together, heavier stuff at the front so it's the bottom of the bag, soft bread items together, fruit and veg together.

Saying that, sometimes I forget my own bags and leave them in the boot and have to fire all the shopping in the trolley to pack at the car anyway.

MuggleMe · 30/01/2024 12:41

I tend to shop about 8pm so there's rarely someone behind me with a trolley (I'll get baskets to go ahead of me). I can then put everything out in order, and with a big IKEA bag for all the store cupboard snacks etc, I keep good time. I hate having to repack on the shelf.

Your Aldi/Lidl sounds wild but in the real world, their cashier/checkout arrangements aren't remotely comparable to illegal speeding and outruning arrest by "the Feds"

quantumbutterfly · 30/01/2024 21:09

Quick. Scan the biscuits the feds are coming. I've put some loose veg down to slow them up. ... Get to the getaway trolley, leave the pound coin there's no time.

Op..who's going to play you in LIDL the movie?

Damnloginpopup · 31/01/2024 17:11

Well I can jump out of an aeroplane at twenty thousand feet and reach terminal velocity as I drop earthwards

That is similar to me in Aldi, hurriedly hoying all my purchases into my basket.

Trouble is, I take a bag that is too small and closes up instead of wearing a parachute and Aldi Bionic Till Warriors have been trained to circumvent the laws of physics and best terminal velocity

My analogy is better because 'so far, so good' only lasts until just before the end...😁

Serencwtch · 31/01/2024 18:44

Context is everything here. Was the cashier on his first day, were other customers beating him?

3luckystars · 31/01/2024 21:11

A win is a win.
