I beat the Lidl cashier

Today was a momentous day. Today I finally beat the Lidl cashier. He tried his best but I was there, ready and waiting to pay with all my bags properly and neatly packed while he sorted out the final till stuff.

Do I now get to move on to the next level?

I'm going to lidl tomorrow now, challenge accepted. Never knew this game...

Do you guys also play 'the game'?

What's 'the game'?

You've reminded me about putting the shopping divider lengthways on the conveyor belt. That was a good one but I never saw anybody else doing it. I still do it occasionally.

Trez1510 · 28/01/2024 16:42

The only time I've 'beaten' a Lidl cashier is if I've only popped in for five items or less.

However, I was once told by a Sainsburys cashier I had the most neatly packed bags she'd ever seen, and noted they were packed in the order they'd be unpacked at home - fridge, freezer, food cupboard, and household cupboard.

It was a proud day to have my 'special talent' recognised by a professional!!

NB - I never let the scouts or whomever pack my bags, I give a massive donation to prevent them doing so - eggs with bleach, pasta with veggies, soap with bread? Not. On. My. Watch.

Well done.
You need to create a cheat sheet for people like me who end up putting litres of milk on top of crisps and free range chicken - and that's only bag 2!

Line it up in order and use big bags
I do heavy ambient stuff to light ambient (one bag), then heavy fridge (raw meat etc) to light fridge (another bag) and have a third bag as emergency overflow

SoupDragon · 28/01/2024 17:56

I used to be able to do this when I went to Aldi regularly, although I did always try avoid one particular cashier who was exceptionally fast. I think I beat her once.

The key for me was picking a lane with a decent queue to allow for strategic unloading of the trolley.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/01/2024 17:57

Your next challenge is to go for the double and get home with every traffic light on green.

DH is in training for this, using the ring road around Bristol. He does however go to work at 4am using this particular road.

Caledoniablue · 28/01/2024 18:01

I bloody love this thread.
Top work OP!

I'm in Aldi every week, not sure the staff here (portugal) have a scan speed, the cashier I usually get loves standing having a chat about my nails/her nails/ the lady she served before's nail colour Grin

Jollyoldfruit · 28/01/2024 18:08

The cashiers in France are really fast but this is countered by elderly couples using cheques to pay.
Also anyone with a disability or pregnant is allowed to skip the queue.
You can't hurry in a french supermarket.

Next you are going to tell us your conditioner ran out at the exact same time as your shampoo.

Ha!

As if this happened!!

Yep I call bullshit!

@Ginmonkeyagain Only kidding. Well done! 😆

CHEESEY13 · 28/01/2024 18:12

If you can outpace a Lidl checkout operative you should be in the Guinness Book of Records. Well done you!

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 28/01/2024 16:04

But you're supposed to pack at the shelf? I'll bet they had to slow down to allow you to do it which then impact's negatively on their stats.

I think it's OK to do it all the till if you're quick/pack your nags quickly! Sounds like the OP did!

MiddleOfHere · 28/01/2024 18:34

A very long time ago, I had a Saturday job at a big supermarket chain. They used to time us and you had around 3 weeks to reach target.
Our weekly average scanning speeds were pinned up on the wall before you went onto the shop floor.

We teenagers used to race each other.
I can't imagine anybody's shopping was in one piece by the time it got home.

But I did used to get people specifically come to my till because of the speed - they wanted to avoid slow checkout assistants.

I can beat the Aldi cashiers at packing. I pick a checkout which has a customer with a full trolley in front, so I have unloading time. It all goes on the belt in order, the bags are open and ready in the trolley and everything just goes in as fast as they can scan.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 28/01/2024 18:37

Is there a superLidl you now get to go to?

cardibach · 28/01/2024 18:39

I’m always packed by the time the device is ready for me to pay…is it really unusual? Lidl and Aldi. I find others painfully slow and am waiting for them between items.

How is it slower to drop things in the empty trolley than to drop the. Into open trolley bags in the trolley?
If you have to faff around with a million little bags that won’t stay open, use the shelf. If you have bags that stand open and you have the sense to load stuff onto the trolley in order it’s just as quick to do it at the till n

You're supposed to pack at the shelf if you can't put things in the bags at a decent pace and want to rearrange / faff about. I used to work in Lidl and some customers understand how to pack their bags as quick as we could scan. If they have decent / big enough bags and decent conveyor belt placement it doesn't slow you down.

Moonwatcher1234 · 28/01/2024 19:39

This thread is enlightening. I have long wondered why the Lidl staff literally hurl my shopping at me, ignoring my imploring eyes as I desperately try and stuff things into bags. Had no idea they monitored like this - well, your bad Lidl- because I don’t shop there anymore just for this reason!

LakeFlyPie · 28/01/2024 19:42

Notalldogs23 · 28/01/2024 14:31

Now you have to see if you can take on Aldi...

Yep, Aldi's next level!

When I occasionally shop at Tesco or Sainsbury's I have to suppress the urge to say 'come on, get on with it' as they amble the goods along the conveyor belt 😁

AxolotlEars · 28/01/2024 19:48

A Lidl cashier once paid me the greatest compliment....she said "when I see you on my till, I feel nervous! "🤣 I should have made myself a certificate!

purplecorkheart · 28/01/2024 19:50

I am pretty good at Lidl. I empty my trolley in order of how I want to pack and invariably a member of staff comes off and asks the person who is serving at the till I am at to borrow their fob or headphones so you get a bit of breathing space.

Our local Aldi are super fast but I tend only to buy a few bits there. I line things up in order in basket and put on counter that way. I then sweep everything into bag and sort in car

JustHereForTheLaughs · 28/01/2024 20:44

Went With my 20yo to Lidl around Christmas and left him to pack.
He finished late lost to the cashier , looked at me and asked how on earth I managed on my own 😂😂
i do have a disability and yes I do keep up with them most if the time.

To be fair, all the people at the till have always told me to take my time, it’s ok etc…

Aldi is another category and yes this is the reason why I never shop there.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/01/2024 20:59

I use big fabric bags and have a bag filling strategy. I need to as I carry them home on the bus.

The Lidl/Aldi checkoit sppeds ar eoar tof how thet keeo it cheap.

I am in London so we have also have mini Lidls which are pretty much all self checkouts - the lads to manage the queue flow at my local one are terrifying. Allow your mind to drift off for a moment in what looks like a big queue and one of them will be bellowing "cash till at the end" in your ear like an army drill sargeant.

SoupDragon · 28/01/2024 21:19

Another tactic of mine was to put something that needed counting (bakery items for example) in the middle to slow them down.

friendlycat · 28/01/2024 22:41

I award you the GOLD star Lidl packing trophy.

It’s never been awarded before. You have set a high bar. Some have come close (including me) ha ha.

if you are looking for a side hustle I think you could do you tube videos, obviously sponsored, with how to achieve this. This could be a lucrative income stream.
