Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

The youth of today are in the main useless and incompetent. Most can barely knock out a decent PowerPoint for godsake

They're wizards on a games console though.

Get them flying military drones and they'd toast Russia by lunchtime, whilst eating an Egg McMuffin.

Look if you want to let your children go and fight an old man’s war that’s up to you.

I don’t. I’d rather look for peaceful solutions.

If the Wagner group were asked to fight the choice for that peaceful solution might not be yours.

You are missing the horrific reality that people face right now

Of course no one wants their dc to fight, you are not special of course not it’s exceptionally self assured to think so, but the outcome can still be brutal and I have a dd too

Daily Mail is reporting that everyone will be conscripted not just the young, probably within six years.

It will be interesting to see how the military copes with training up 67 million people.

Then I suggest you step up and offer your peaceful solution to the Ukrainians. I’m sure whatever stunning idea you have hasn’t occurred to them.

Most of you posters happy for our young people to go to war have never had to face going to war yourself so shut up”

Well said. The absolute definition of keyboard warriors.

I’m a pacifist. Dont support war in any context.

Yes.

Maybe posting on mn? Not sure it’d do it

That’s great. I’m not pro brutal horror funnily enough. I doubt Ukrainians are either. Maybe they should have said the no thanks

Nobody ‘supports’ war. It is reluctantly entered because the alternative is worse. I find this sort of opinion shockingly naive for a grown adult.

Yes, really over egged the pudding this time

The Daily Mail does have it's uses. After all if war does break out and there is rationing, it can be used instead of toilet roll

maeveiscurious · 27/01/2024 11:06

Also if we head into a serious war those with chronic illness and drug dependence will die. I'm a realist I know that my drug supply will not be essential, I have around 6 months without my drug.

My apologies 🥴 All of these middle aged and older people denigrating our youngsters and throwing them at war when they themselves have never had to do the same seriously riles me and I ought to have been more scrupulous in reading.

I have about 48 hours!

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 11:09

@maeveiscurious that will wipe out thousands though won't it? Aren't half a million just on thinners? How many are on blood pressure meds? The NHS would collapse

MermaidEyes · 27/01/2024 11:09

Daily Mail is reporting that everyone will be conscripted not just the young, probably within six years.

And the Daily Mail is the only one reporting this. Why does anyone even read that paper??!

Haven't RTWT, but wasn't there one on the same topic just a day or two ago? 😕

There's several every day now 🙄 I swear they're journalists just riling everyone up.

Gymnoob · 27/01/2024 11:11

I think our flabby babyed selfish young people are making it more likely to happen, not less! How easy are we as a target?! Compared to eg Ukraine where civilians were instantly willing and able to fight to defend themselves and each other.

This really cracked me up 🤣 what on earth are you on about! You think the 40 or 50 or 60yo of this country are any less flabby and pampered?

It’s truly laughable.

At the end of the day I am not going to fight in other countries. I made that decision at 16 when I was invited to join the Army. I have a son. And neither is he. No one has ever successfully invaded our country (bar the romans but even they got stuck). Our terrain is too complex and we are too densely populated.

Would I defend our house/ town. Absolutely. I can shoot both .22 rifles and L98 semis. Not a bad shot.

But putin might be mad but he’s not a complete idiot. He wouldn’t even try it. He would go straight to the nukes.

IClaudine · 27/01/2024 11:11

I can't help feeling that all this fuss about impending war with Russia is to distract from the fact that the Rwanda scheme will never happen.

The Tories have very little left to fight the election on now. Bigging up the threat of war might be a last desperate measure.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/01/2024 11:12

Startingagainandagain · 27/01/2024 07:10

It will never happen.

Most young people these days would not be able to cope even one day in the army let alone on the frontline and there is no longer a national service to give people the basics.

It would be a pointless exercise as people would need months of training to be even remotely useful...

This is just done to scaremonger and get more funding for the armed forces.

But surely if they increase defense spending it will still have a lag time of recruiting new soldiers and training them up.
Time scale wise what's the difference between recruiting new people to be soldiers and training them and training up conscripts?

This is what war is often about. Not just combat fighting but also using troops to protect shipping lanes, airports etc. Like what's going on now with Yemen. We are an island. If we get cut off we're screwed. That's when we'll need boots on the ground abroad, but we don't have the numbers now.

I would hate anyone to be conscripted to fight. The thought of all the young men I know being signed up makes me ill. But to act as though it wil never happen when the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East appearing to be worsening is naïve.

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/01/2024 11:12

@maeveiscurious that will wipe out thousands though won't it? Aren't half a million just on thinners? How many are on blood pressure meds? The NHS would collapse

It will have different priorities.

When people are saying, "no my war" etc etc

This is reality, slimmed down services to support the war, there would be life changing shortages. My medication comes from India, it won't be a priority.

EasternStandard · 27/01/2024 11:13

Haven’t people noticed world news yet?

Increased instability, possible Trump return other NATo people saying the same get more prepared

Referring to @IClaudine post

@MrsSkylerWhite hence my outrage about being lumped with those!
