Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

Why the fuck would young people want to fight for a country that has royally screwed them over? Tuition fees, the cost of housing, shitty low paid jobs at the expense of learning manufacturing, trades and technical skills, a political system nobody trusts or believes in, constant scaremongering and dog whistling, a foreign owned press bent on destabilizing the country for likes and clicks, global warming….They’d be well within their rights to tell us to get fucked. We’ve wrecked the place and they owe us nothing.

But do you expect other people to defend you?

And if they don’t and you are attacked what then?

Exactly. And presumably OP would be happy for her sons to go to prison instead for draft evasion?

Posypointshoes · 27/01/2024 10:31

@IClaudine china does though.

Why on earth would China start a World War?

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 10:39

Yeah, it's a government that encouraged voters to vote to leave one of the most secure political alliances in history and couldn't even manage the basics of PPE for medics during a pandemic. The idea of them managing anything of this scale and magnitude is laughable.

Fair point.

I wonder at what stage they would stop people leaving the country, a lot of us do have other passports

That's the point though. They won't get a choice. Well, they could, if they become conscientious objectors, but that would involve them being rounded up and arrested, if history is anything to go by.

I honestly don't think people realise how serious conscription is.

Lol! They don't have the prison space for actual criminals

Arrested & held where though?

FloorWipes · 27/01/2024 10:41

the most secure political alliances in history
But it lacks an army or sufficient defense spending so in one sense it is extremely insecure!

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/01/2024 10:41

Exactly. And presumably OP would be happy for her sons to go to prison instead for draft evasion?

Well, to be honest, it would be a little safer than the alternative (that will never happen).

Fjruejejrnrnrbbbbb · 27/01/2024 10:42

When news stories like this come out, I ponder on what other Tory shitshow is happening that they’re trying to distract us from.

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 10:42

Propaganda was used in the past to convince people to "do their duty", that it's shameful to be a deserter. Times are different now.

SwimmingWorrier · 27/01/2024 10:43

Most of you posters happy for our young people to go to war have never had to face going to war yourself so shut up.

In WWII they set up camps in the UK where conscientious objectors were sent to carry out meaningful work towards the war effort...

LlynTegid · 27/01/2024 10:45

We have a Defence Secretary who does not even use one name for all his dealings. We had one not so long ago who has been alleged to be a bully.

There would be a lot of conscientious objectors were it ever considered, and a lot would seek reserved occupations.

Wow, some weird young person hating on this thread.
Imagine, young people not being up for wanting to kill actual living human beings and getting screamed at as part of the weird military brainwashing machine. How unreasonable of them. How awful. How dare they.

I know, right? On a different thread someone complained about ageism because a poster wondered if people in their eighties had sex.
Here though people gleefully roll out the silliest avocado toast and Tiktok stereotypes about younger people, all from the comfort of their own sofas presumably, and it’s all good. No ageism to see here 🙄

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2024 10:45

Startingagainandagain · 27/01/2024 07:10

It will never happen.

Most young people these days would not be able to cope even one day in the army let alone on the frontline and there is no longer a national service to give people the basics.

It would be a pointless exercise as people would need months of training to be even remotely useful...

This is just done to scaremonger and get more funding for the armed forces.

@Startingagainandagain

To be fair, many men didn't cope in the last conscription! My great uncle killed himself rather than go back to the front!

IClaudine · 27/01/2024 10:46

This thread is totally bonkers. I remember during the first Gulf War, people were shitting themselves about the possibility of conscription (and saying they would refuse). Thank god there was no social media to really whip up fear.

People really should study history to see what could happen. Life has moved on, yes, but in times of war it's usually the same old shit. Young men sent to die needlessly because politicians couldn't stop willy-waving at each other.

Maybe some would object but I don’t think the outcome if everyone does the same is peaceful

It’d be brutal and horrific as the other side is still invading

Well, to be honest, it would be a little safer than the alternative (that will never happen).

Many many would pull strings to get their dear Rory kept both out of jail and the army. And that rich political class who try and get their little darling exempt would face much more of a backlash than before.

When people start realising which young people exactly are expected to be cannon fodder on the front lines and start demanding rich kids to go and fight to, they’d have to scrap the whole thing.

And yeah a jail is preferable and more safer than being sent out to war for sure.

anniegun · 27/01/2024 10:47

Funny how all the people campaigning for this are not planning to do it themselves

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/01/2024 10:48

fonfusedm · Today 06:58

The youth of today are in the main useless and incompetent. Most can barely knock out a decent PowerPoint for godsake

They'd essentially be more useless than cannon fodder (or equivalent)”

Absolute bollocks.
My husband is 65 this year and working full time. I’m 59, I don’t do paid work. We shall be retiring in a couple of years and will be of bugger all use to anyone but ourselves and our family. Meanwhile, our adult kids are both working whilst studying subjects that will greatly benefit others when they receive their degrees and the eldest is raising a child while she does so. Her husband is in a crucial technical defence role.

Please take your prejudiced, outdated views and shove them.
