Absolutely appalled by Kenneth Eugene Smith's execution

Appalled is too soft a word. I feel physically sick and angry.

What a sick world we live in.

I am against the death penalty. One person wrongly convicted and sentenced to death is too many. This particular case sounds like torture, and to use what the Nazis used on millions, its just disturbing on so many levels.

I keep thinking about it. But what can we do? I'm in UK, and expect any activism will be happening in US.

What will happen to the state of Alabama? Surely something must be done. This was not human.

Some people do get job satisfaction.

Exactly. I couldn’t work in an abattoir - suspect many meat eaters couldn’t. But some people aren’t bothered one bit. Some even enjoy it- a little too much going by some footage released. There are some sick bastards out there!

Doesn't the Bible say an eye for an eye?

The bible also gives detailed instructions on how women should be stoned to death if the lose their virginity before marriage

Are you also happy with that being part of a justice system

And if you are a Christian Jesus disagrees with an eye for an eye and instead suggests turning the other cheek..

My thoughts are only with his victim . He knew what the consequences could be .

Yes, exactly.

He knew what he was doing and ran the risk of being executed.

Reminds me of that Iranian guy who blinded a poor woman and then was upset that they wanted to blind him!

If you don't want to be blinded then don't blind someone else!

coldcallerbaiter · 26/01/2024 20:28

I think it is sick NOT to execute a murderer.

Alicewinn · 26/01/2024 20:28

Agree, I think I read that it took 32 minutes to pronounce dead from the beginning. Absolutely sickening. Nobody deserves to die like that.

letstrythatagain · 26/01/2024 20:28

Bless him. What a terrible way to die. My heart bleeds for him...🙄

IncompleteSenten · 26/01/2024 20:30

If it's a deterrent then why are murder rates higher in states with the death penalty than those without it?

BMW6 · 26/01/2024 20:32

InAnotherLifetimeMaybe · 26/01/2024 20:21

@BMW6 so who would you have clean up at your guilotine scene? Who are you proposing retrieves the body part etc?

Who would put the corpse and head into a coffin? Well I could do that alone if needs be!

I imagine the deceased's NOK would like the body for burial (if permitted).

You seem to think the cleaning up afterwards is some sort of major issue?

Are you thinking of the amount of blood? No reason why containment would be a particular problem if you think about it. I'm not suggesting an open air public event!

From all I have read it really does appear to be quickest, guaranteed and painless. Over in a split second. The decapitated head may retain consciousness for up to 15 seconds.

I couldn’t work in an abattoir watching innocent animals being tortured and killed but I would have no qualms in killing sick fuckers like him 🤷🏻‍♀️

I see another MN thread about the death penalty has brought out all the torture porn fetishists ready to claim they are happy to kill people for money, claiming it makes them different to the man who was put to death for killing people for money...

Exactly. It's fascinating to see them demonstrating their inability to come up with anything approaching a respectable argument to justify it, but apparently not.

urbanbuddha · 26/01/2024 20:33

Old Testament.

In the New Testament the second new commandment is ‘Love thy neighbour as thyself.’

MRSMTO · 26/01/2024 20:33

InAnotherLifetimeMaybe · 26/01/2024 20:11

All the mumsnetters thinking this was ok

Like to see you all volunteer to murder him

Or perhaps they could have asked his victims children to do it?

Because if someone murdered my husband or son I would quite like to handout some retribution.

I really don't give a shit how a man who bludgeoned a woman to death died.

Comedycook · 26/01/2024 20:34

Sorry but I just think people in favour of the death penalty must be pretty unintelligent.

Mumz0612 · 26/01/2024 20:34

Bring on the death penalty I say I'm glad he suffered as now he knows how his victim felt

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 26/01/2024 20:22

Some previous posters have said there's a difference between justice and revenge. Should there be? Is revenge a bad thing?

It absolutely is a bad thing in this context. There’s no place for revenge in the judicial system.

Do you also wonder how long it took his victim to die?

Gia79 · 26/01/2024 20:36

CavalierApproach · 26/01/2024 19:56

This is how I feel too.

I actually found it more upsetting to read that his victim is buried in a joint grave with the husband who arranged and paid for her murder (and then took his own life when he realised the police were onto him).

Yes. Reading about how he stabbed her cheeks also remained with me. Seemed so gratuitously violent.

I’ve got an idea.. we can conscript them all to the army. That ‘ll sort ‘em out 😂

DrCoconut · 26/01/2024 20:38

I think the idea that the state can kill categories of person it deems deserving of it is disturbing. I'm glad we don't have the death penalty here and would 100% oppose its reintroduction. This is not the same as condoning murder or other heinous crime, more that once you set the precedent for removing people's human rights it can be a slippery slope. Killing someone should never be permitted by law.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 26/01/2024 20:39

I'm against the death penalty in principle, I guess.

Do I really deep down care though about murderers who inflict the worst possible pain on victims, and years of anguish and punishment to the families? No I don't. Do I lose sleep over instances like this where the death penalty is used. No I don't. Would I wish it on someone who did that to my loved one. Yes I would. Walking contradiction but there you go.

I think someone who can’t see two sides to a controversial subject must be pretty unintelligent too.

iamwhatiam23 · 26/01/2024 20:40

My only sympathy is with the victim and her family! I couldn't give a shiny shit how much he suffered but can bet it was nowhere near as much as she did!

Oh I can see the other side...it's a typical ill thought out, knee jerk, tabloid response that a five year old could come up with.
