The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

It's glorious - all that colour is very welcome in winter.

We had snow in the night but the snowploughs went past at 2am and 5am and DH used the snowblower on the driveway this morning, but the street looks pretty.

Power cut around 5am too, but luckily resolved around 8am.

A similar colour scheme to the first mall, but the here they didn’t really make a street scene. Instead, they’ve gone for a whole series of exquisite “rooms” which have been built all along the central atrium.

Another mall has done adorable and charming mini shops or rooms in a “vintage small-town Malaya” theme. It’s wonderfully evocative for people of my parents’ generation, and to an extent mine too (I can just about remember scenes like these, particularly in my hometown, as a child). I do wonder what the hip young things of 21st century buzzing KL must make of them.

I also found a less garish decoration shop. Shame I can’t fit most of these things in my luggage.

Get some planters when you're home... I've been pruning the roses, it's chilly out, but clear sky.

In anticipation of frost, I sawed and chopped some kindling and split some logs, to fill the basket.

I love those displays, they're glorious!

Some gorgeous displays and decorations! Such beautifully rich colours. And it’s not really a decoration but I really want that cushion with birds on it in the one with the rooms! It’s the sort of thing that would always make me smile.

And of course I now have snow envy! What a street scene.

The snow is gorgeous and so are all the displays and decorations, just what I needed to cheer me up today.

Final mall, and I think my favourite. They’ve built a persimmon-drying village. It’s really lovely!

Wow Kuc that is so spectacular! I have never eaten a dried persimmon - only fresh ones. Are they often found over there? Seems they must be if villages dry them!

Don't stop! They're all beautiful and interesting and just what I need on a cold bleak day at the arse-end of winter. All of them, including the bright red supermarket ones at the very beginning.

Spam away! I'm thoroughly enjoying all the photos.

To my knowledge, persimmons are not grown in Malaysia, so this persimmon-drying village must be reflective of a place in China! We do, however, get dried persimmons in the shops - they’re very sweet and rather chewy. (I prefer dried peaches).

The most heart-warming thing about all these mall decorations is that they’re particularly intended for people to come and take photos; you get entire extended families (from ancient grannies to tiny tots) all dressed up in traditional Chinese or Malaysian costume who gather for a photo session. Often, props are provided e.g. straw farmers hats, baskets on poles. It’s lovely to see!

Just a couple more of the persimmon village - another look at one of the stunning “farmhouses” and me (in disguise) carrying baskets of persimmons on a stick.

In case anyone is wondering, Malaysian shopping malls do this kind of decorating for every major festival - Eid, Divali, Christmas, sometimes for Independence Day!

Ooh the persimmon picture is especially lovely. I must go on a hunt for dried persimmons, as I now love the fresh ones. I had an unripe one at university that put me off them for 40 years!
