Thread 12 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 11).

The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

The colour! It’s beautiful. And lovely to see you @Kucinghitam, even if in disguise!

Final mall, and I think my favourite. They’ve built a persimmon-drying village. It’s really lovely!

We all love persimmons, I'll have to try to remember to go to the Chinese food supermarket, next time I'm in Newcastle and see if they have any.

artant · 31/01/2024 16:03

Loving the pictures!

The persimmon drying village is extraordinary. So pretty and the idea of a whole village dedicated to drying one fruit is such a wonderfully strange thing.

Gonners · 31/01/2024 19:04

Gorgeous pix, @Kucinghitam. Now I want to go to Malaysia for Diwali, which is my favourite of the festivals. Actually, I just want to go back to Malaysia, scene of so many school trips from Singapore. Years later, I went to a tea plantation in Sri Lanka and the smell was like Proust's madeleine - I was 8 years old again.

MouseMinge · 31/01/2024 20:36

@Kucinghitam you have lovely legs. I asked you for these photos a little while back and I've loved all of them, thank you so much.

Kasper is such a dude! I currently have my ridiculously needy dude between my legs on the recliner.

VictorianBigot · 31/01/2024 20:42

@MouseMinge I couldn’t help but notice Kuc’s lovely legs too Grin

Kucinghitam · 31/01/2024 21:55

Oh god you lot! Blush

(@Gonners let's do a MN school trip!)

Are you sure it was you in that pic, Kuc, and not one of the Cells?

artant · 01/02/2024 00:09

I was also impressed by Kuc’s lovely legs!

duc748 · 01/02/2024 00:16

I'm saying nuffink! 😃

Happy St Brigid's Day. First day of Spring, and in Ireland the day the little animal sticks its head out to check whether it can see its shadow. No shadows today, so it should be going to get a bit warmer.

Gonners · 01/02/2024 11:05

It's a hedgehog in Ireland, isn't it?

Highlight of the day so far has been the CEO of TikTok trying (and failing) to point out to a Republican senator that Singapore ≠ China.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew

I'm Singaporean! TikTok CEO denies China ties

US Senator Tom Cotton repeatedly asks Shou Zi Chew about his links to the Chinese Communist Party.

duc748 · 01/02/2024 11:37

Tom Cotton is one of those with Presidential ambitions further down the road, isn't he? One of the 'bright young things' of US politics. 🙄

In other news, I have managed to obtain a ticket to see popular musical Hamilton next week in Manchester. I really can't remember the last time I saw an actual stage-show, I am quite excited. Have any of you guys seen it? I know it's been on in London for forever.

artant · 01/02/2024 12:02

Hamilton is great! It’s years since I saw it so it’s a bit blurry in my memory but I loved it.

Gonners · 01/02/2024 12:49

We wonder if he thinks Singapore is Hong Kong which, in distance terms, is a bit like confusing the Isle of Wight with Crete.

Britinme · 01/02/2024 13:02

I saw Hamilton in London in November. It was fantastic and worth every penny of the ticket. The songs are very fast so if you’re not well up on the history you might want to watch it again afterwards on streaming with the captions on!

tomorrow is Groundhog Day here, when Punxsutawney Phil is brought out to see his shadow. We have a groundhog that lives under our garage (probably more than one but we only ever see one). I tried to grow tomatoes and courgettes in a couple of pots the first year I was here and the furry little bastard ate the lot.

artant · 01/02/2024 13:11

That’s a very strange house!

duc748 · 01/02/2024 13:17

I was hoping that you might get the libretto in the programme, Brit. But I suppose that's a bit unrealistic.

Britinme · 01/02/2024 13:21

If it wouldn't spoil the experience for you, duc, it might be worth watching it on streaming first. Or maybe the lyrics are online somewhere? Or read up about Hamilton? A chunk of my Combined Arts degree was American Studies (half literature and half history) so I was fairly well acquainted with the history before I saw it. I don't think that's essential though - the whole experience carries you along with it.

duc748 · 01/02/2024 13:31

I don't really want to stream it first, but of course I'll read up on it (already have done, a bit).

VictorianBigot · 01/02/2024 13:56

Is that a drop in front of the bed??? I would definitely die in that house.

DeanElderberry · 01/02/2024 14:33

It was the loo that you can only get to from the main 'house' though a wardrobe (like Narnia), or from the non-lethal bedroom by going outside, that bothered me most. But competition was stiff.

artant · 01/02/2024 14:50

@duc748 Pretty sure the sum total of my Hamilton prep was skimming the info in the programme before it started. My knowledge of the period was rudimentary at best but I loved it. I keep meaning to stream it but haven’t got round to it. On of the friends I went with (a history teacher so she had much more idea than me to begin with) has now watched it several times though.

Medee · 01/02/2024 19:28

We’re going to see it in Edinburgh.

it’s on Disney, and pretty sure we’ll do a rewatch so we’re up on it beforehand.
