Thread 12 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 11).

The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Happy birthday Bint, from another Tiger!

artant · 26/02/2024 16:57

A tiger sounds like a good thing to be. I think I am a rat which sounds altogether less good.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 26/02/2024 17:22

Mr Veg is a rat while I'm an ox.

Dotellhimpike · 26/02/2024 17:45

Rats are great, I think they get a bad rap.

As for Chinese astrology, I am a dragon but it means as much o me as knowing I am a saggitarius, that is to say, not much.

SinnerBoy · 26/02/2024 17:46

In the Chinese Zodiac, I'm a dog.

Cocks leg on thread corner, leaves...

Gonners · 26/02/2024 17:56

I'm a rabbit in the Chinese system, but long ago decided to adopt the Vietnamese animal instead and be a cat. In Myanmar (where they go by days of the week) I'm a Nāga (or rather a Nagi, what with being female) which is some sort of semi-divine human/serpent hybrid. Not sure I can live up to that one, though.

weaseleyes · 26/02/2024 19:23

Happy birthday, bint!

I'm a fellow rabbit/cat, gonners, but I might well be an older one.

Not unless you were born in the 1930s. 😉

And Happy Birthday, bint!

DeanElderberry · 26/02/2024 19:52

Woof Woof.

(that's happy birthday in my language)

Britinme · 26/02/2024 23:13

DH1 was a Pig and DH2 is a Horse. Neither of them align with what I read are the characteristics associated with those animals.

Dotellhimpike · 28/02/2024 18:39

Home from work to discover Archie cat sitting patiently in front of a set of drawers. I knew immediately he'd dropped a mouse in one of them and now couldn't get it out. Rescued and set free.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 28/02/2024 18:50

Lucky mouse! Does Archie have form or this sort of thing?

Dotellhimpike · 28/02/2024 18:55

Archie totally has form for this sort of thing. If I'm in the house when he brings one in, I can usually get it off him and release it but if it's when I'm out, it's curtains for the poor wee crathur.

Gonners · 28/02/2024 21:31

Archie is just taking his pest-control duties seriously and should be praised and distracted with delicious treats while you deal with the release. You'll be grateful for his skills if you ever get a rat! #TeamCat

Happy belated big birthday @NoBinturongsHereMate ! Sorry for the delay but this week has been a bit full on so far hence not much posting.

I'm no on my third radiotherapy thing, well I had it today which makes me 12% through the whole thing. It's cummulative so it's all good so far. I popped into Snoop's on the way back and had four slices of toast and strawberry jam and cold pizza. I probably won't be able to eat that in just over a week's time so I'm making the most of it while I can. I could seriously have had four more slices of toast. I'm mad for it at the moment.

Yesterday was full on "Oh, I didn't know that." I thought I was having my portable pump changed at Worthing. I wasn't. I was supposed to be at Brighton to have it done at 09:00 but hadn't got a letter with telling me this. I got a call at 1000 asking where I was. I eventually got there just after 1200 and then discovered I was supposed to be having another cycle of in-hospital full chemo. I thought that was all done, but no. I have another one in three weeks. I misunderstood everything but to be fair chemo-brain and a little bit of it not being 100% clear that big chemo would still be happening during radiotherapy. Radiotherapy will be a bit shit for at least the first couple of days of next week but it is what it is.

Today while having radiotherapy I closed my eyes and pretended I was wandering around the Muse D'Orsay which was really pleasant. I stood in front a few of my favourite paintings. I thought about going to see the Mona Lisa at the Louvre but frankly I'm not sure I could be arsed to stand in front of the real one with crowds all around to look at a painting that I don't even like that much. I might go to the Louvre tomorrow but I'll have to look up what paintings they have there because despite being in Paris a few times I've yet to visit it. I just do the D'Orsay whenever I can because I love the work there.

MouseMinge · 28/02/2024 22:50

Oh, whoever recommended the podcast, The Commune. I've listened to it all now and it was great. I've started listening to "Who Trolled Amber?" which I heard about yesterday on Woman's Hour and it's about troll factories/bots put into play to post hundreds of thousands of tweets about Amber Heard for a long time but going full on during the court case in Virginia a couple of years ago when Johnny Depp sued her. There are only two episodes so far but apparently it's likely that the troll factory/bots are from Saudi Arabia where Depp is having a bromance with MBS as I posted about before. So, that's interesting. There are, of course, a lot of rabid Depp fans who have nothing better to do than call her a whore and a gold digger who deserves to be dead and some of them would like to murder her but the point of the manufactured pile on during the court case was in part to influence the jury who were not sequestered and while they weren't supposed to look at at the internet and social media but there was no one to stop them.

Anyway, all very lovely and the plot sickens.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/02/2024 23:34

There's a lovely Mondrian at the Orsay - similar to https://fineartamerica.com/featured/drydock-at-durgerdam-1899-piet-mondrian.html but I don't think it is this one. I remember it as bluer and lighter.

I agree it's not worth fighting through the crowds for the Mona Lisa, but it does have the advantage of pulling them all away from the surrounding exhibits. There are some splendid things being ignored just a few metres away.

I love the Musee D’Orsay, definitely had a nicer time there than if we’d got into the Louvre.

Gonners · 29/02/2024 15:53

Arf! I have just taken advantage of it being 29th February to propose marriage to MrG. He just looked up from what he was doing and said "Yes, of course" and then went back to whatever it was. On further enquiry, he confirmed that yes, he had heard me and yes, the answer was yes.

SinnerBoy · 29/02/2024 16:01

How are you feeling with the chemo, Mouse - brain fog aside? And the lack of eating.

duc748 · 29/02/2024 16:22

An honest woman at last, Gonners! Congratulations!

artant · 29/02/2024 16:25

I rather love the casualness of MrG’s response. Congratulations Gonners!

Kucinghitam · 29/02/2024 16:33

Oh! Congratulations @Gonners Flowers
