Thread 12 - TalkLair: “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.”

(Previous thread 11).

The days are gradually growing longer, but the worst of the winter weather is not yet behind us. In the TalkLair, we remain hunkered down keeping cosy and warm. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Nice hounds, Pike, one in the video reminded me of ours as a puppy. She's very far from a puppy now and is rarely hurried.

Geographically.

Do you know Black Rod? My nan was from there.

Yeah, just up the road. It's nice around there: Blackrod, Adlington, Rivington. Quite often get up there on my bike in the summer.

SinnerBoy · 25/02/2024 17:32

My dad says he has about 200 cousins of varying degrees of separation in the area. I haven't been since I was about 6.

@duc748 - I watched the rugby this morning as the BBC has it on iPlayer. Talk about going down to the wire at the end! Congratulations to the VAR ref. 😆

Cracking contest, I thought. Outstanding defence to keep them down to 12 points. I don't think there was anything to suggest that Penrith got the ball down at the end. Wardle's try, though, was a bit more controversial... 😃Hope it increases interest in the sport.

MouseMinge · 25/02/2024 18:24

I'm happy because Liverpool won the league cup. Huzzah and all that. For all neutrals it's an exiting league this year with Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City all so close at the top. For those of us who are partial every week you're hoping the other two teams LOSE.

Gonners · 25/02/2024 18:44

Well, Wardle says it was good, so let's be charitable. 😆The Penrith one was interesting because it happened right as the siren started and they were still wrestling with him when it stopped. I don't know the rules on that (or on anything much) - in the sense of does the game end when the siren starts or when it stops? But if he did get it down at all then he was very likely too late.

I'd forgotten quite how physical League is.

@MouseMinge - I have zero interest in football but MrG is pro-Arsenal and I therefore support Liverpool (because Mohamed Salah is such a very lovely man).

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/02/2024 18:44

I'm happy the thread has had pleasing sporting results, even if I have no idea what most of it means.

My birthday weekend has included a trip to the zoo. Its not a big one, but they have some unusual things, like tree kangaroos and Scottish wildcats.

Britinme · 25/02/2024 19:16

I have a birthday coming up on Wednesday and DH has planned a surprise for me, though part of the day will be something I specifically asked to do (visit the Farnsworth gallery in a pleasant Maine coastal town called Rockland, home of many paintings by various scions of the Wyeth family, which I haven't been to in a few years). He wouldn't have thought of that one if I hadn't mentioned it but he has some other thing in mind for the afternoon as well, after having lunch near the gallery in Rockland. This apparently involves us having dinner later not that far away from Rockland in Camden, which is another nice little Maine coastal town in which most of the restaurants will be closed because it's not tourist season yet. All very pleasant and I'm sure we'll have a lovely day - but I'm actually not a huge fan of surprises. He loves planning them and I don't have the heart to disappoint him when I know his heart is in the right place, but for me part of the fun of an event is looking forward to it, which is hard to do when you don't know what it is! I know I am BVVU though.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/02/2024 19:19

I'm with you. I'd much rather know what's planned.

MouseMinge · 25/02/2024 19:53

I love surprises. Snoop will be in India for my birthday - which is frankly outrageous 🙂- and she's told me she's arranged something for the evening of my birthday (in early April). I'm excited to see what it is. To be fair she knows I love surprises and get giddy with excitement when I know there's going to be one. I like arranged things too. Life would be a bit impossible if everything was a surprise.

MouseMinge · 25/02/2024 19:57

@Gonners Mo Salah is an absolute joy and his lovely smile never fails to make me smile in return. Not that he's ever smiled at me just on the telly and that.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 25/02/2024 22:00

Heh! MrPSD is also a Liverpool fan, though not as fervent as he used to be. He's just been watching a selection of The Match's highlights, feeling happy.

Yesterday MiniPSD & I went to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for Othello by candlelight (well, and some police-style bright lights from time to time).

We had a great time - a very nice bite to eat at the Swan restaurant beforehand and we really enjoyed the play, if one can 'enjoy' a Shakespeare tragedy in which every female gets called a whore, and most of them end up dead. It was modern dress version with Othello being a police man, and touches of updating. I thought it would be silly but actually it worked well. We'd never been to the SWP before - it is delightful, more comfortable than expected and the candlelight gives a lovely atmosphere. The audience also had more younger members than say the National.

I encountered lots of Arsenal fans on the way there and back, so I was able to impress MrPSD by knowing the score.

duc748 · 25/02/2024 22:43

@Gonners Yes, it's very physical, but also it allows for skillful ball-running and high-speed handling. As evidenced by the tries Wigan scored.

artant · 26/02/2024 02:46

I know approximately nothing about sport and I’m not sure I have much of an opinion on surprises either.

On bottom of the alphabet initials, I used to work with a Zeb (not a Zebedee) who had the altogether improbable initials ZQ. I’ve also come across a couple of Ziggys over the years (one at work and one the boyfriend, now husband, of a school friend).

VictorianBigot · 26/02/2024 07:30

A guy on my course had an unusual last name beginning with Z. He said that when he was a child, someone phoned his house to say they had been looking through the phonebook and asked if they were aware their last name had no vowels.

That's quite hilarious!

Happy birthday @NoBinturongsHereMate, I take it you've hit the half century?

Top dossier keeping, Kuc. I have indeed.

Not so much dossier keeping as vaguely recalling from a previous thread that we were born in the same Tiger year!
