Betrayed by a jelly sweet

This was a few days ago, but I'm still appalled by it, so I'm sharing the horror with Mumsnet.

DH likes jelly sweets and there is always a bag of fruit jellies in the cupboard. No-one else in the family particularly likes them which is probably why DH likes them, anything that the DC like has to be hidden or it'll be gone within a couple of days after the big shop.

The other day I fancied one and, because blackcurrant is always the best, I took a black one.

IT WAS LIQUORICE! I hate liquorice.

What manufacturer in their right mind would make the black one liquorice in a bag of otherwise all fruit? Athlone Sweets, shame on you.

I had to follow up with a lemon one to get the taste out of my mouth.

I would be devastated. Hand hold op

I feel your horror.

Beyond awful. (I hate liquorice too.)

Although... if your DH doesn't like sharing his jellies and knows you sometimes nick the blackcurrant ones, perhaps he cunningly substituted liquorice as aversion therapy?

Tighginn · 23/01/2024 13:51

Midget gems?

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 23/01/2024 13:51

I’d like that, tbh. Or a mixture of both blackcurrant and liquorice sweets of the same colour, so you get a surprise 😂

He is definitely cunning enough for that, but not in this case. I only occasionally fancy a jelly, like maybe 3 or 4 a year so it doesn't really impact him, but also he doesn't like liquorice much either and apparently has to throw the black ones out at the end of the bag. Apparently they are much cheaper (and also a bit crapper) than the big name brands so it's worth his while to buy them knowing that he won't eat some of them.

He is taller than me so if he doesn't want me to have something he pushes it to the back of the top shelf so that I can't even see it, let alone reach it. Grin

Those many-flavoured jelly beans can be fun, I think they stop just short of earwax (alas)Grin

LTBB (Leave The Bertie Bassett)

Daftasabroom · 23/01/2024 13:57

Maybe Google "beanBoozled"

Put them in a different container and leave them easily accessible to children.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/01/2024 13:58

DD had cinnamon flavoured jelly beans i her advent calendar. They were an interesting flavour.

I'd take the liquorice ones though!

whatsmynameaga1n · 23/01/2024 13:58

YABU for not going for the green or yellow ones to start with anyway, the superior flavours

commonground · 23/01/2024 14:00

See I hate a blackcurrant but love a liquorice, so that would be a win for me. (It takes Allsorts 😉)

WellOwlBeDamned · 23/01/2024 14:01

Second Dreaming’s love of blackcurrant and liquorice but together for me please

not at all related to a teenage love of pernod & black Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/01/2024 14:02

There is something about an unexpected flavour that makes it so much worse. Tasting something that is a different flavour from expected is unsettling, even if I like the alternate flavour. I just need to know what I'm about to eat or drink. I always hated Revels as a child for that reason.

That would be Pernod and black in jelly form?

I'm starting to get flash backs and feeling a bit queazy.

I am googling Athlone sweets and I can't find a bag with this magical licorice "fruit". Are you sure DH hasn't done a mash up?
They do a nice bag of purple cough drops, you could maybe replace his lemon ones with those.

They call them Bubble Pastilles. To be fair they make no claims at all about flavour, but they look like fruit flavoured and, according to DH, they are all fruity except the black ones.

Liquorice comes from the root of a legume... definitely not a fruit! More a vegetable.

Would a broccoli jelly sweet count as on of your five a day?

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 23/01/2024 14:28

I live in Forrin, and the flavours here can be such a disappointment.

I'm fond of lime sweets, but green ones here tend to be apple, which tastes slightly of vomit. Red ones are allegedly grape, but generally taste of nothing.

le sigh....

fuckssaaaaake · 23/01/2024 14:36

Midget gems? Certain brands sneak the black ones as liquorice, it's evil

mumda · 23/01/2024 14:42

I like everything but something like parma violets would be left to the end.

I love Liquorice.

WellOwlBeDamned · 23/01/2024 14:54

Daft 😂I believe that is the appropriate adult response to P&b

EBearhug · 23/01/2024 14:56

I like liquorice and blackcurrant. However, it is odd when you expect one flavour and get another, even if they're both good.
