Betrayed by a jelly sweet

This was a few days ago, but I'm still appalled by it, so I'm sharing the horror with Mumsnet.

DH likes jelly sweets and there is always a bag of fruit jellies in the cupboard. No-one else in the family particularly likes them which is probably why DH likes them, anything that the DC like has to be hidden or it'll be gone within a couple of days after the big shop.

The other day I fancied one and, because blackcurrant is always the best, I took a black one.

IT WAS LIQUORICE! I hate liquorice.

What manufacturer in their right mind would make the black one liquorice in a bag of otherwise all fruit? Athlone Sweets, shame on you.

I had to follow up with a lemon one to get the taste out of my mouth.

Karma op Grin

Jelly sweets ingredients have changed and are foul now. A few still made with glycerine but if you look at what's in them, it's not worth the bother any more.

Same with the hard fruit ones.

I don't buy them often so it was a nasty surprise when I bought some.

I like everything but something like parma violets would be left to the end.

I love Liquorice.

I can cope with parma violets as long as I know what to expect in advance.

As a random added sweet flavour in a variety bag - bleugh.

I took a photo of what was left in the bag. They absolutely look like blackcurrant, don't they?

@Daftasabroom a new patio is always good.

adds value to the home.

improves quality of life

I know a good builder.... very discrete

Daftasabroom · 23/01/2024 16:15

DNeice once gave me dog food jelly bean, I have patio space reserved.

FluffyFanny · 23/01/2024 16:32

The black ones in midget gems must be liquorice flavour! If they are blackcurrant then they are imposters! Only Lions do them properly!

Anisette · 23/01/2024 16:34

also he doesn't like liquorice much either and apparently has to throw the black ones out at the end of the bag.

The waste! I like liquorice, could you send them my way?

Would a broccoli jelly sweet count as on of your five a day?

Haribo use vegetables in their sweets.

Maybe people can argue them as part of their 1-2 (if you count chips) fruit and veg a day?

RainBow725 · 23/01/2024 16:54

Shock that's all kinds of wrong. I recommend a bag of Tesco wine gums to take the taste away. They are very fruity!

39 posts in and nobody's said,

"Well I like licquorice, why don't you? Stop complaining!"

Come on, it's a bit slack!

You are quite right @SinnerBoy , there should have been a passive-aggressive comment implying that only morally bankrupt people dislike liquorice by now.

Closely followed by someone else commenting that the worst person they ever worked with loved liquorice and they went on to commit some horrendous crime. 😂

Also, no one has mentioned your clearly enormous carbon footprint from all those liquorice trees that have been felled to bring you these joyous sweets.

He is definitely cunning enough for that, but not in this case. I only occasionally fancy a jelly, like maybe 3 or 4 a year so it doesn't really impact him, but also he doesn't like liquorice much either and apparently has to throw the black ones out at the end of the bag. Apparently they are much cheaper (and also a bit crapper) than the big name brands so it's worth his while to buy them knowing that he won't eat some of them.

He is taller than me so if he doesn't want me to have something he pushes it to the back of the top shelf so that I can't even see it, let alone reach it. Grin

How dare you malign Athlone Sweets? Literally the best thing about shopping in Supervalu.

Oh, excellent point! Did you know they fly licquorice trees up from the Antarctic?

Flowersbutpain · 23/01/2024 17:50

This is obviously Gods punishment for stealing your husbands sweets. No sympathy for you at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2024 17:50

Well no, but maybe a liquorice sweet could add a fraction to your 30+ a week plant diversity score (herbs and spices do!)Grin

Moier · 23/01/2024 17:51

Iiquorice 😋😋😋

Theredjellybean · 23/01/2024 18:05

I can't believe no one has so far mentioned how they couldn't possibly manage a whole Sweet...and they feed a family of 20 on one sweet for a week.
You are so greedy and this is clearly a stealth boast...

ApolloandDaphne · 23/01/2024 18:16

I would love that. I hate blackcurrant sweets but adore liquorice.

They're little shrubby bushes, but they do dig them up for the roots. (Think mine's died.)

I went to the museum in Pontefract because of liquorice (which is a lovely building.) There was only a little on liquorice- and I couldn't find any Pontefract cakes to buy, which I still feel a bit bitter about.
