Betrayed by a jelly sweet

This was a few days ago, but I'm still appalled by it, so I'm sharing the horror with Mumsnet.

DH likes jelly sweets and there is always a bag of fruit jellies in the cupboard. No-one else in the family particularly likes them which is probably why DH likes them, anything that the DC like has to be hidden or it'll be gone within a couple of days after the big shop.

The other day I fancied one and, because blackcurrant is always the best, I took a black one.

IT WAS LIQUORICE! I hate liquorice.

What manufacturer in their right mind would make the black one liquorice in a bag of otherwise all fruit? Athlone Sweets, shame on you.

I had to follow up with a lemon one to get the taste out of my mouth.

I don’t think I’ve had liquorice in years. You generally have to go out of your way to find something with liquorice in it.

What kind of abominable jelly sweets is your husband buying? Why can’t he just pick up a bag of normal haribo like sensible people?

Now you know why no one else eats his jelly sweets. He makes terrible choices.

Taking the black one was an odd choice. Surely red is always first option, followed only then by black.

LauderSyme · 23/01/2024 19:04

That is absolute treachery from a perfidious sweetmonger. No excuse for such a lowdown dirty move.

However YABU because blackcurrant is clearly the worst flavour not the best.

What? Red is usually the indeterminately sweet one, the worst choice. Which means if you're eating the whole pack then yes, you down them first so you end up with the best flavours. This does depend on the brand but in fruit pastilles the ascending order is red, yellow, green, black, orange.

I go out of my way to buy Paper Tiger liquorice jelly bears.

SO good.

I didn't realise it meant I was literally devil spawn but I'm happy to accept my delicious aniseedy fate!

I quite like liquorice, in moderation.

When I was a kid I won a whole jar or liquorice torpedoes in a 'guess the number of sweets in a jar' competition at a fête. It lasted a long time and didn't destroy my liking for it, or my teeth.

It's only just occurred to me that some people might not have entered the competition in case they won!Grin

Lions Sports mixture used to be liquorice, try eating it with an orange one together......delish😋

I genuinely cannot understand why Parma violets exist.

I know. Just why?

The OP’s opening post made me laugh. I love all jelly sweets though with a passion. I can only eat them at Xmas or I’d be 20 stone. Of course I love the darker ones best but will eat a lemon or green - with just a slight hesitation!

Parma Violets are my nan's perfume.
