It’s now in the same location near the M62 as the one from North West air ambulance that has been there for a couple of hours.

I thought planes were avoiding Russian airspace - has that changed? Does it depend on what altitude they're at?

They're avoiding Ukraine and Russian airspace close to the Ukrainian border. Have a look at this flight I've selected flying from Turkey to Moscow and you can clearly see the avoided area.

Many countries (loathe to use the word Western, but can't think of a better term) are not permitted to fly over Russian air space at all. Some which aren't banned are also choosing not to e.g. JAL. This means they are using the slightly longer polar route (see KLM image example) from North East Asia.

Plenty of countries are allowed to do so and are doing so, notably Emirates and Qatar to the US are flying north over Russia.

Similarly, Russian aircraft are banned from North America, UK, EU and other airspace, which means Russians heading home from their beach holidays in Cuba, are having to take a long way round to remain in international airspace (see example of the flight from Varadero to Moscow).

(sorry for the digression from Isha, hopefully ok in the spirit of normal FR threads)

Plane going over now - first one I’ve heard today (LBA).

VesperLind · 22/01/2024 14:59

And another one. They’re going out thick and fast now!

alloalloallo · 22/01/2024 15:36

What in the world is going on here?

I think you could have walked that quicker 😂

Three Jet2s and a KLM have gone out successfully now. It is worrying me a bit, as a cheap weekend flyer from Leeds, that Ryanair have had so many failed and cancelled flights. What if they decide it’s too much hassle as an airport and decide to pull the plug on it?

I'd guess it's down to a problem with the Flightradar database, possibly caused by the disruption....it's got the flight associated with the wrong city pair.

RampantIvy · 22/01/2024 15:55

I think all the pilots deserve a big round of applause.

I don’t fancy the M62 on ANY day, worst motorway ever. And look where it goes. Yes, that’s right, the dark side. Hahahaha. Just kidding, red rosers.

It starts in Merseyside and GOES to Yorkshire, so I'd be careful about saying it GOES to the dark side given the junction numbering....

When you live in the middle either direction is towards the dark side 😂

The numbering still starts at 5 and goes upwards wherever you live!

RedToothBrush · 22/01/2024 17:28

Apparently junction 4 is not officially junction 4. Or some such bollocks.

DoodleMum12 · 22/01/2024 17:36

Jet2 from Tenerife just had a failed attempt at Leeds

Thanks for your company last night everyone (I bailed just after midnight so catching up today). Chatting to people at work today it seems lots of others were watching too. Hopefully all the displaced passengers, crews and pilots are now making their way home.

Looks like there’s still problems at BHX
(Won’t let me add a pic)
