Can anyone explain/ guess what is going with London- Vancouver BAW5VY , holding over the Lake District , having been to Pitlochry. Not red, but looks to be going back

We cross posted - indicator light has come on warning of cargo door open. (So it may be the door, or it may just be the light)

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/01/2024 20:14

Ryanair Riga to Leeds is diverting to Man.

Tomorrow now looks to be Gusty based in the chaos of yesterday so we think we will see more flights cancelled in advance

PatriciaHolm · 22/01/2024 20:23

GZ396PP moscow - st Petersburg has taken 4 hours for a 1 hour flight... I think it's finally having a go at landing.

Chersfrozenface · 22/01/2024 20:28

Is it just mf or has BA85's track vanished off FR?

It's not from FR, it's from a couple of Twitter feeds - radarboxcom, flightemergency

Chersfrozenface · 22/01/2024 20:32

Ah, OK, on Playback it's landed back at Heathrow

Ah, OK, on Playback it's landed back at Heathrow

That's strange. I wonder if it was a medical emergency 🤔

BriocheForBreakfast · 22/01/2024 20:42

Oh I see - doh! Cargo door open indicator was on

Watching the YouTube link about passengers crying and screaming as the plane tried several times to land before aborting and flying off to another airport, maybe in another country. Were passengers advised before boarding that they were flying into an absolute shitstorm?

notimagain · 22/01/2024 21:14

Re the BaA85 earlier - the usual cause of those types of warnings (which FWIW are these days on most aircraft come up as a message on a screen, not a light) if they come up in flight is often a microswitch in the warning system that's crept out of adjustment and produced a false warning..

However for you can't assume it's a false warning, so it's a case of doing the appropriate procedure.

See Cabin Pressure Johanesburg episode!!

But worth the divert in that case!!

Which link is that?

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/01/2024 21:21

Indeed, I just said light because I wasn't thinking and I am old!

If you were told you were going somewhere where the wind was possibly thirty five to forty knots crosswind (which was what was forecast in many places) would you be any the wiser as to what that might mean for the flight?

If on boarding a flight you were told the visibility at destination might be down 100 metres would that influence your decision to stay on the aircraft?

I do understand that it can be tough as a passenger but one really important thing to take away from last night's stories is that despite all the talk of people crying and screaming everybody landed somewhere safely....i.e. the professionals in the air and on the ground did their jobs properly and the system with all it's checks, balances and margins worked.

FWIW t's certainly not the first time there have been shit storms mass diversions caused by weather and it won't be the last, wide spread snow fall in the UK has seen UK bound flights scattered all over Europe in the past...

butterflybywindow · 22/01/2024 21:28

Sorry Sloane Street I misquoted. I was watching a few videos on you tube earlier where there was a lot of drama. There's a bbc link earlier on in the thread

Oh, it's hard to get out of the habit, especially as the newspapers love a good "warning light"..

Is this the typical reaction?

MARTIN: What?
DOUGLAS: Little flashing warning light, Captain. Anti-icing the starboard wing. Declaring itself rabbit of negative euphoria.
MARTIN: What?
DOUGLAS: Not a happy bunny.
MARTIN: Right, okay, okay, okay! Isolate the anti-icing valves, port and starboard, prepare for landing, and -
DOUGLAS: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! We don't need to divert, we can do without anti-icing!
MARTIN: No, we can't!
DOUGLAS: Martin. We're currently flying over southern Spain. We're about to fly the length of continental Africa. May I suggest that ice may not be our most formidable foe?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/01/2024 21:35

I have found these threads to be quite reassuring - seeing in bad weather that it is quite common for planes to have to abort landings and sometimes end up at a different airport. If it ever did happen to me in future, even though I would still find it scary, I would have some understanding of what was happening.

notimagain · 22/01/2024 21:37

@cakeorwine

"Is this the typical reaction?" Well, hopefully not....

(......resists going into pedant mode about the flaws in Douglas's logic) 🤐
