I live in SE and Gatwick fairly close to us . Am surprised planes landing ok because the gusts here are really strong!

Has anyone ever been on similar flights that were holding, go arounds or diverts (after hours circling and trying). I can't imagine what the passengers must be thinking, although I'm sure the crew are excellent at announcements. The pilots know the limits also.

Just wondered. The only time I had an issue was going to Nice and the weather there was very windy. Tried twice, gave up and went to Toulon. I will never forget the attempted landings. I don't care what anyone says there cannot be anyone who would be super calm in those circumstances! We got going again from Toulouse to Nice eventually.

We circled for ages in a storm trying to land in Orlando one summer evening. DD started crying as she was so scared of the turbulence. After a while instead of MCO as the destination it changed, the pilot didn’t announce until after 15 mins after the screens said we were going to Sarasota instead. We only really waited 30 mins there and took off again and finally landed in Orlando about 4hrs late (was late taking off) and couldn’t get any milk for my breakfast cuppa!!

There was a Leeds to Dublin flight this morning which got diverted to Shannon. It later (presumably after bussing the Dublin passengers to Shannon) set off back to Leeds. Couldn’t land at Leeds, so headed to Manchester, then somehow ended up at Stansted.

I think all Jet2 flights have managed to land at Leeds today but pretty much all others airlines have cancelled or diverted. They need better Leeds landing training!!

I am getting a bit addicted to FR24 ✈

Journeytosober · 21/01/2024 20:59

I live very close to STN and winds have picked up hugely in last 30 mins. My house is shaking ! Hats off to the pilots in this weather.

PolledandBolled · 21/01/2024 20:59

RYR31NM to Dublin looks like it’s had 2 attempts at landing so far!

HuntingForChicken · 21/01/2024 20:45

Out of interest have any flight been cancelled or are they they all ‘having a go’?

Yeah lots have been cancelled mostly UK and Ireland flights.
Most international flights are indeed “having a go” but quite a few not ended up where they wanted to.

Star81 · 21/01/2024 20:59

We also have 2 runways at Prestwick that run at different directions

duckpancakes · 21/01/2024 20:59

How do they decide what airport to try next?

Bimblesalong · 21/01/2024 20:59

@HobnobsChoice thats quite a swirly picture it’s drawn.

How do they decide what airport to try next?

runway direction vs wind direction and which is closest to intended destination and has space for them.

Cudz · 21/01/2024 21:00

@waterdusky I'm watching the Berlin to Dublin one too. They just seem to be circling at 10,000 feet. Hope they land soon!

God help anyone on a Ryanair flight who gets diverted to a different airport. Ryanair will just leave them stranded.

Not true in my own experience anyway. Yes there is confusion, yes I had to queue up, yes yes yes it wasn't instant, but they got us on a bus to the destination eventually. No hotels or overnights involved. Got back food expenses but no compo because it was all weather related or something like that.

I'm not defending them, but in a situation where flights are diverted to a "safe" airport, that airport is often swamped with similar weary travellers trying to get to their destination all at the same time. I am sure other airlines are no better or worse.

Moaning5 · 21/01/2024 21:02

Gran Canaria to Glasgow just landing at Liverpool

MumblesParty · 21/01/2024 21:02

Barcelona and Faro flights have landed in Dublin just now, so why can’t Berlin? Is it because it’s a smaller plane?

You’ve been luckier than me!

jet2 Antalya to Birmingham looks like it’s going for attempt no 2 LS1240

That's my DH flying that one! Glad he's down! Kids have been asking where he is. He's a safe pair of hands, used to fly harriers, then typhoons.... JET2 passengers are safe 😄The calmest man I've ever met in my entire life.

Kayjay2018 · 21/01/2024 21:05

There have been a few go rounds at Gatwick, one straight over my house a lot lower than normal, he tried again and then went back over the channel. Had big jet tv on most of the afternoon, shame it's not so easy to film in the dark and very glad I'm not trying to land somewhere in this wind, really gusting around Gatwick area

Hiyawotcha · 21/01/2024 21:05

Heathrow’s wind has picked up from 21 to 25 knots. I’m watching BAW911 that’s been zooming around London and the south east.

NoKateMoss · 21/01/2024 21:06

@Knitgoodwoman that's warmed my heart! Well done to your man!

TeaandHobnobs · 21/01/2024 21:06

@mauvish yes they are called “stacks” - very common at the big airports like heathrow. Their stacks rotate as to which one they use, depending on which runway and direction is being used for landing, so that not any one nearby area is constantly subjected the noise of aircraft approaching to land. There’s one over Bucks where we are but it doesn’t seem to get used that much.

waterdusky · 21/01/2024 21:06

Why are so many being rerouted to MAN? What is it about that airport that lets them land?

Blueplaque · 21/01/2024 21:07

DHL Brussels to East Midlands having another go after a go around first time .

cheesychipsontheoche · 21/01/2024 21:07

Looks like Gatwick is very challenging at the moment

mauvish · 21/01/2024 21:08

Gran Canaria to Glasgow is down, but unfortunately for the passengers they're in Liverpool.
