Wroclaw - Leeds has broken out of its circling pattern and is heading off for a sightseeing trip over Lincolnshire as well.

Since you asked me for a story about planes and fuel, I believe I have one....

DOUGLAS: Could you just double-check this fuel order?
MARTIN (taking the paper from Douglas): Er ... (high-pitched) What?! Three thousand litres? Why have you loaded three thousand litres?
OTTO: Because you asked for three thousand litres.
MARTIN: No I didn’t. I said, ‘We’ll need three thousand litres.’
OTTO: ... Okay, is that sounding any different to you, because ...
MARTIN: No: ‘We’ll need three thousand’ in the tank and we already have sixteen hundred, so ...
OTTO: Well, maybe I am a simple soul, but I heard, ‘We need three thousand litres,’ and what I thought was, ‘Oh, I know, I’ll give them three thousand litres! They’ll like that!’
MARTIN: Yes, but ...
DOUGLAS: Yes, well, whoever’s fault it is ...
OTTO: It’s his fault.
DOUGLAS: I know. But the good news, Martin, is we’re still under maximum take-off weight.
MARTIN: Oh, good.
DOUGLAS: The less good news is that when we get to Fitton, we’ll still be way over maximum landing weight.
MARTIN: ... Right. So we can go up but we can’t come down.
DOUGLAS: Exactly. We are Newton’s worst nightmare.

(I know some people will get the references!!)

The Berlin to Glasgow seems to be landing first time

mauvish · 21/01/2024 22:54

The Alicante flight looks to be heading towards Carlisle!!

wonderstuff · 21/01/2024 22:54

I was on an emergency landing once, flight to New York developed a minor fault and pilot didn’t fancy taking it across the Atlantic, we circled LHR for about an hour with wheels down to burn off fuel, because it was safer to land with less fuel. I think they just aren’t designed to land with a full tank of fuel. It was ever so dull.

I've seen clips on the news from time to time, but had forgotten. Love it. We used to go as a family to Manchester Airport to have a car park car-picnic, and watch the planes take off and land. Apparently there's a 'Viewing Centre' built their now, it was just gravel when we used to go.

We used to go with my grandparents outside the perimeter to watch the planes at Manchester too...eek 50 years ago!!

I think it's fair to say there are a few professional or ex-professional aviators on here.

And people who live very near to airports! We’re so close to LBA that on summer mornings when the bedroom window is open we can hear the planes revving up on the runway!
Can confirm it is extremely windy atm and we also have a flood alert for the fast-rising river Wharfe! 🤦‍♀️

treath · 21/01/2024 22:55

@PolledandBolled

I will give it a miss thanks.

His knowledge is questionable at best

Wroclaw - Leeds has broken out of its circling pattern and is heading off for a sightseeing trip over Lincolnshire as well.

Wrocław diverted to Amsterdam per LBA website.

And Alicante diverted from Leeds to Glasgow!!

cakeorwine · 21/01/2024 22:55

Leeds - Alicante looks to be heading to Scotland.

Because some flights are landing into Dublin. And if it's DUB based crews operating the flights not only will the airlines want the planes back where they should be to prevent any knock on effect for the mornings flights but the crews will also want to get home rather than being stuck at an outstation for the night.

It just seems up to chance (when a gust of wind strikes) if they land or not.
I guess the airlines have to weigh up the cost/ benefits.

There are going to be a lot of planes out of position tomorrow!

JobMatch3000 · 21/01/2024 22:56

Third attempt for Edinburgh into Dublin. Shannon and Glasgow have just landed so hopefully they too will catch a break in the wind.

VWd · 21/01/2024 22:56

Wow the Berlin to Glasgow flight just landed first attempt!

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 21/01/2024 22:56

It’s going to be chaos tomorrow with all these planes and crews in random places!

PolledandBolled · 21/01/2024 22:56

stonkytonk11 · 21/01/2024 22:50

@PolledandBolled what do you mean by sterile environment?

@stonkytonk11 when a plane is taking off or preparing to land, or in circumstances like this with extreme weather. Pilots will not talk about anything other than the business of landing the plane safely. They will have 110% focus on landing and will most likely not be giving that many updates. The air hostesses/hosts will likely only know the basics as well.

Ra5pberryLemonade · 21/01/2024 22:57

Saville- Gatwick abandoned landing at 600ft

Oilyoilyoilgob · 21/01/2024 22:57

Seville to Gatwick just aborted its landing. I feel so sorry for everyone on these planes. We are away at the moment so I’m only hearing from back home how windy it is in Yorkshire.

EwwSprouts · 21/01/2024 22:57

Think all this makes an extremely good case for re-opening Doncaster airport. Extra long runway. The council are on it....

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 21/01/2024 22:57

cakeorwine · 21/01/2024 22:55

Leeds - Alicante looks to be heading to Scotland.

Which seems mad when so many Scottish flights are diverting!

PolledandBolled · 21/01/2024 22:58

treath · 21/01/2024 22:55

@PolledandBolled

@treath ive just told him and he would love to have a discussion with you! Where does your knowledge come from? Not years of training I imagine but A* in keyboard warrioring

VWd · 21/01/2024 22:58

Tenerife flight hasn’t managed to land at Edinburgh though!

lezsucks · 21/01/2024 22:58

No idea how that berlin flight made it down, the wind at the moment is ridiculous at Glasgow. So bad we didn’t hear it and can usually hear every take off and landing!

mauvish · 21/01/2024 22:58

Alicante - Leeds diverted to Glasgow.

It would be such a bummer to "arrive" around midnight a couple of hundred miles from your car - or worse still, in the wrong country altogether!

MadeOfAllWork · 21/01/2024 22:58

In the 90s as a student in Manchester we used to go to the airport as it was somewhere you could get a coffee at 5am after a night out.

Tinkerbyebye · 21/01/2024 22:58

Stringagal · 21/01/2024 22:55

Wrocław diverted to Amsterdam per LBA website.

And Alicante diverted from Leeds to Glasgow!!

Edited
