The Alicante flight is about to fly over our house

notimagain · 21/01/2024 22:49

mummyh2016 · 21/01/2024 22:46

Because some flights are landing into Dublin. And if it's DUB based crews operating the flights not only will the airlines want the planes back where they should be to prevent any knock on effect for the mornings flights but the crews will also want to get home rather than being stuck at an outstation for the night.

Agreed, and TBF (as posted earlier) looking at the forecasts earlier it looked as if outside of gusts places such as Dublin would have been OK for landings, so attempting the flights was reasonable.

Milan to LGW looks like it's headed to Brussels now

Or is the Alicante flight into LBA just going a long way round to use up fuel

This would make no sense. I have no idea where he’s going tho

It's unlikely to have anything to do with fuel. The aircraft has come from Alicante, it's not going to be heavy now.

HobnobsChoice · 21/01/2024 22:49

Why do they dump the fuel. My catastrophic brain is saying so there is less to ignite if the landing goes badly but my logical brain says if a plane and fuel catches fire then it's bad news anyway. Is it to do with weight?

stonkytonk11 · 21/01/2024 22:50

@PolledandBolled what do you mean by sterile environment?

VWd · 21/01/2024 22:51

PolledandBolled · 21/01/2024 22:48

The most horrifying thing is that the cockpit will be in a sterile environment as per landing/extreme weather so it’s 99% likely passengers will not have been informed completely what is happening. Must be awful to be up there in the dark with zero idea where you are or when you’re to land

I was thinking about this, wondering if they’d give them the heads up on approach that there was a good chance of a go around, just so people (like me) don’t freak out 🙈

Tinkerbyebye · 21/01/2024 22:51

Is EMA open? The Ryan air flight from Malaga doesn’t even appear to have waited it’s simply turned round and appears to be going else where, stansted??

My pilot friend (flies for virgin Atlantic for 8 years) has said that due to the runaways being shorter at Leeds than any larger airport and the weather conditions they will have been advised to dump fuel- with enough reserve for a 2 hour holding pattern!

if they took off and had an issue that meant they had to land again they’d be too heavy so likely would need to “dump”
or more likely “burn off” fuel to become a safe landing weight

none of these planes tonight will be dumping or burning fuel

Wait til you find big jet tv ….

I've seen clips on the news from time to time, but had forgotten. Love it. We used to go as a family to Manchester Airport to have a car park car-picnic, and watch the planes take off and land. Apparently there's a 'Viewing Centre' built their now, it was just gravel when we used to go.

I get very nervous in advance of a flight but once on the plane, I just commend myself to the professionalism of the crew and zone out. I think it would make me more nervous, not less, if we were to be kept oinformed of evey failed attempt. I'd rather just trust that we will get somewhere safely!

Doesn’t even seem to be attempting prestwick (can’t blame them)!

ohmydiddlydays · 21/01/2024 22:53

It doesn't make sense to dumpy fuel when they may have to fly back to the continent to land

Watchkeys · 21/01/2024 22:53

Looks like it's calming down around Gatwick now, except for the one from Istanbul, who is clearly drunk.

I doubt anybody is dumping fuel tonight.

As a general point you only usually dump fuel if you need to get weight down quickly to below the aircraft's maximum permitted landing weight...and that's normally only a factor if you have a problem after take-off and need to land ASAP.

@treath happy to give you his twitter/linkedin! He’s a great long haul pilot and used to work for the RAF in Wittering in Cambs as a pilot too! He has over 10,000 hours with Virgin and god knows how many with the RAF. I’d trust him with my life and his knowledge!
