A quick google comes up with this;

“Squawk 7700 is an emergency code that indicates a serious issue onboard the aircraft. It can be input by pilots or instructed by ATC, and it alerts controllers and ground crew to prepare for the arrival of the aircraft.”

PlasticineKing · 21/01/2024 21:41

@jmx3 that’s the one I’m watching. I thought it was down! DH supposed to be flying tomorrow lunchtime from Edinburgh. It’s howling here, feel like my roof is about to detach!

VWd · 21/01/2024 21:41

duckpancakes · 21/01/2024 21:40

What does it mean? Does it mean look I haven't got fuel get me down?

Just googled it and signals an emergency of some kind. Gosh those poor people, hopefully they can land safely at an airport nearby

Pinksnowstars · 21/01/2024 21:41

I think the Geneva-Gatwick flight is heading back to Geneva.

Oh gosh

Mojodojocasahaus · 21/01/2024 21:43

If you go onto alerts on the flight radar app
you can turn on an alert for squarks

mauvish · 21/01/2024 21:43

I think the Geneva-Gatwick flight is heading back to Geneva.

and that's gone red too so must have squawked?

ohmydiddlydays · 21/01/2024 21:43

A few have squawked tonight, I think it's generally meaning they need priority landing because they've gone round a lot and presumably getting lower on fuel.

VWd · 21/01/2024 21:43

Could the emergency just be the fact they’ve already had two attempts and they’d like priority at the next airport so as to avoid the risk of becoming low on fuel? Or is it worse than that?

mauvish · 21/01/2024 21:38

Not sure what Luton-Cork is doing, he's back out over the water, maybe it'll turn and try from another direction (if flight paths permit?)

Looks like it. Finally descending and heading for the airport.

Blueplaque · 21/01/2024 21:44

2 DHL, a UPS and a Ryanair flights to EMA all circling over Notts and Leicestershire , not sure if any are going to try and land. Wind still very strong up here !

But it might just be a procedural thing to ensure priority

Thinking that now

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 21/01/2024 21:45

It’s interesting though as the Sharm-Glasgow hasn’t really had lots of holding or going around compared to many.

they were straight in and out at Glasgow and prestwick with one attempt at each

Ah maybe? Maybe the passengers are getting all worked up?

dailyduel · 21/01/2024 21:45

ohmydiddlydays · 21/01/2024 21:41

It turns red

Thanks. So it has. I can see that now when I look at a different plane.

BMW6 · 21/01/2024 21:45

3 of my siblings are flying to Heathrow from South Africa at the moment..........due to land around 6.30am.

Getting worried but perhaps the worst of the winds will have cleared by then 🙏

Bratnews · 21/01/2024 21:47

Looks like Luton - Edi has given up and is heading south, maybe Newcastle?

Cudz · 21/01/2024 21:47

London to Cork has frozen on my app. Stuck at 1000 feet. Had it landed?

PolledandBolled · 21/01/2024 21:47

Pinksnowstars · 21/01/2024 21:38

Ooo the Sharm - Glasgow has sqawked 7700 now.

Looks like it’s heading to Manchester? Maybe Leeds?!

PointerParty · 21/01/2024 21:48

Air traffic controllers must be breaking a sweat this evening

DoodleMum12 · 21/01/2024 21:48

I’m watching that one too, heading for Newcastle I think.

My son was on Belfast to Glasgow that landed at 1730. He said it was very bumpy! He said a Few people were being sick probably due the bumps all the way. He was very happy when it landed !

That would be my idea of hell- Endless circling and being buffeted about, to the accompanying sounds and smells of vomiting passengers.

My friend's husband is meant to be flying home tonight- {Gatwick?}
It's a wild night out there.
