Shorts over swimming costume

Does anyone do this ?

I do aqua fit a few times a week and although my costume is really well fitting and comfortable, I can't deal with the worry of an arse cheek or worse falling out

I don't want a leg suit because I'm fat and they aren't very forgiving but thought some slim fitting swim shorts over my costume might work

Does anyone do this ?

I think the problem might be that your swimsuit doesn't fit you properly, or isn't designed for exercising.

Picpac876 · 16/01/2024 23:07

I have a few tankinis from https://www.swimwear365.co.uk/ that I quite like because of the loose fit on top which helps cover my belly better whilst still looking stylish. They seem to have quite a wide swimwear range so might have something there that does the trick.

Perhaps a bit more than your budget, but they do look to also have some nice looking shorts.

Deakin & Blue swimsuits hold everything in place. They also do swim shorts. I wear my D&B cossie for Aqua, not had anything escape yet. For outdoor swimming, I have a rash vest and leggings, SPF50 so I don't have to use sunscreen.

No reason not to wear shorts if you want to, a long torso tank suit or a higher quality one might help too.
For what it's worth I've been swimming my whole life with some intensive periods and I've never seen anyone with something hanging out like you describe.

hazandduck · 17/01/2024 05:48

Yep I sometimes wear my black swimsuit with a pair of black period shorts over the top, they are only small but hold me in and make me feel that bit more secure when I’m on the last day of my period. I daren’t swim any other days whilst I’m on! I think it looks like a tankini, which is common.

I also like suits like this:

I also have the sports direct swimsuit. For some reason it does make me self conscious wearing it though- but better than my bikini line being on show!

I wear these or long leg versions (and long sleeves) when I swim. I go twice a week. I've worn them for 30yrs and they're infinitely easier to get hold of now as more people wear them. I've never wanted to reveal my decolletage, legs, hips, arse etc to the general public and loathed public swimming as a child. Thank God the market is catching on and providing options.

Loopygodiva · 17/01/2024 07:54

I wear a tankini top with longer style boy shorts. I’ve lost a lot of weight and battling extra skin. I’m really conscious as it shows a lot on my tummy and thighs. Wearing shorts gives me confidence as it hides this and my tankini top is 2 layered, the top layer being a more floaty style when I get out of the water

ThePerfectDog · 17/01/2024 08:24

You’re sorted now I think but I wear swim shorts over a bikini a lot of the time.

A decent swimsuit should do the job. I swim a lot and have noticed more women wearing regular clothes in the pool. I get that people have hang ups (I have them too) but I really question the hygiene of it.

Just to add, everyone's probably focussing on themselves rather than looking at what others are wearing. Just contradicted myself haven't I!

Hygiene of it when you are swimming in chlorine?
I have the speedo suit and I find it comfy.
My issue is I am two various sizes and I hate tight stretch marks...
It is good to finally see a variety or a swimsuit with a attached skirt may be OK.

New2024 · 17/01/2024 08:52

Most of my swimming is done on cold Cornish shores. I don’t like all in one swimsuits because I’m tall and they always feel restrictive. I have a wetsuit for surfing etc. My swimwear consists of tankini stops and shorts. I have some swim t shirts and jammer swim shorts. It’s mostly stuff I’ve collected in surf shops over the years. If I go to a pool I would wear the jammers and a tankini top. My favourite tankini is a blue Debenhams one in a tall range they used to do and it goes well with the jammers that are a sort of cycling shorts length

DonnasShrugaleros · 17/01/2024 09:11

@Mumtime2 more so I don't know if someone's worn it in the gym before being washed, I've also seen cotton T-shirts on people (reminded me of doing my bronze medallion!), grim seeing tissues in the pool when they come out of someone's clothes. I know not everyone showers before getting in and I know the role of chlorine but i think the answer would be for the availability of swimwear with that would suit those who wanted more coverage. And I would like a range for those with a longer body please, one that's very chlorine resistant and looks more sporty than for lounging round the pool.

I’ve worn men’s swim shorts over my swimming costume since I was a teen back in the day, makes swimming more comfortable for me.

Donna1001 · 17/01/2024 18:14

I wear swimming shorts on holiday with my bikini. Just feel less self conscious that wat.
they are ladies swimming shirts, (with the lining ) from Holister, I bought them in the sale, think they were about a tenner.

Nutterroast · 17/01/2024 21:06

Do whatever you feel comfortable in. I go to a triathlon swim class and there are women there who wear shorts over their costumes, full length swim leggings, and one woman wears a swim tshirt over her costume because of surgery scarring. Nobody cares.

I'm slim but have always had shocking cellulite, it looks like I've suffered some sort of trauma to my thighs. People stare at it and I've had people ask me about it/what happened to my legs when I've been at the pool and on holiday. So I wear a once piece shorts suit.

NewYear24 · 17/01/2024 21:08

I wear a swimming costume and shorts for paddle boarding and just a swimming costume for aqua aerobics. All shapes and sizes do my aqua class and I’ve never seen a rogue arse cheek.

I've worn board shorts over my swimsuit in the past but it's not the most comfortable solution - especially if you are moving around a lot in aquarobics. I bought this swimsuit from decathlon and it's a really nice fit (I'm a size 18/20), it's like an all in one tankini with a loose fitting top and cycling short bottoms.

I have both decathalon tankini shorts and the boyleg swimsuit from Slazenger/ Sports direct.. and I would recommend Decathalon tankini swimsuit. The Slazenger swimsuit didn't hold its shape after some time..

Ncollins2091 · 17/01/2024 23:59

yes I have done this but mine was shorts and t-shirt as I don’t like costumes so you should be fine wearing yours over the top of your costume

MabelMaybe · 18/01/2024 09:47

My DC's swimming teachers do, so they're in the water with a swimsuit, a t-shirt and shorts. No-one else's business what you wear tbh.

Flatulence · 18/01/2024 10:57

I have a swimsuit with 'legs' (little shorts). Mostly because I'm tall and normal swimsuits leave me with a 'hungry bum' it also means I don't have to think about my bikini line.

Revelwithacause · 18/01/2024 13:10

rwalker · 16/01/2024 18:36

Nobody cares but if you feel self conscious fair enough

the danger is you can highlight what your try to conceal

This. I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a bit of a chubby thigh/arse cheek poking out of a costume but I would clock that someone was wearing shorts over a swimsuit and think it was sad that they were ashamed to show their body. Confidence is everything!

novalia89 · 18/01/2024 14:10

Go for it. People in my triathlon club wear a swimming costume with inbuilt shorts or even a triathlon suit which has almost knee length shorts and a padded bum. I've seen teens at the swimming club wear swimming costumes with shorts, like a unitard. You can buy them in sports direct. If it will take some anxiety away and not have to worry about wedgies or bikini lines, go for it!

FinallyHere · 18/01/2024 15:43

I have the skirted swim capris. Very happy eating them in and out of the pool

https://calypsa.com/uk/swim-bottoms/leggings.html

Loads of options from different suppliers, these happen to be the ones I have.

Tontostitis · 19/01/2024 05:52

I teach aqua aerobics and honestly the more you wear the more you stand out. Shorts and especially t shirts over swimming costumes make people look twice as its odd, The tankinis with shorts draw far less attention. Tankinis especially those with built in bra support are best for aqua classes as the two separate bits stop the bottom being pulled up. If I'm in the water I wear tankini tops with shorts or generous bottoms. I favour bravissimo they are so well made they last forever.
