Do you wash your hands after a wee in the night?

It’s the middle of the night and you’re up for a wee. (Assume you’ve just dabbed yourself dry with loo roll, no other bodily fluids present!) Do you do a full 30 second soap and water hand wash vs after? A quick water-only rinse, and pat dry? Not wash at all and go straight back to bed? Something else completely?

I’ve often wondered what others do but too afraid to ask in real life 🫢

The logic is that after the morning wee they will flush so having touched a germy handle they will want to wash their hands and are not trying to stay asleep.

But everywhere else that they have touched could well be germy.

Fizbosshoes · 15/01/2024 22:45

I'm surprised, I usually fail the MN hygeine police standards but it wouldn't occur to me not to wash my hands after going for a wee. It's habit

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/01/2024 22:45

Look, some people drink urine you know! Calm down and carry on.

Lili132 · 15/01/2024 22:45

Personally I think it's disgusting to not flush the toilet until the morning especially if you live with other family members.
I noticed that people who are lazy about hygiene tend to be more dirty in general, for example poking their nose, licking their fingers etc and not washing their hands after either.
I'm very uncomfortable touching anything in public places because I'm aware of how unhygienic people are.

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/01/2024 22:46

Yes, always wash. There've been times when I've been about to do a mucky job straight after using the loo (not at night obviously), when I've thought, no point in bothering, but then I always do, automatically.

Daddysgirl47 · 15/01/2024 22:47

I never knew there are so many unhygienic people 🤮🤮🤮🤮 I wash my hands after ANY time I go to the toilet, I was taught as a child and I still do it. It takes a few seconds. You get back into bed, touch your sheets, your face, your partner maybe. The excuses for disgustingness are hilarious.

IcedPurple · 15/01/2024 22:47

I run my hands under the tap for a few seconds but that's more out of habit than anything else. I know it won't do much to 'clean' them but I'd feel manky otherwise.

Pyramintdreamer · 15/01/2024 22:48

Am I the only person who just washes the one hand that did the wiping... Cold water and soap, keep eyes closed lights off to try to increase chance of getting back to sleep

AndThatWasNY · 15/01/2024 22:48

Are you all weeing on your hands?!
I touch nothing but loo paper. I definitely don't get wee on my hands. I don't even shut the door or flush so no problem.

I saw on TV they proved that a wooden chopping board washed in cold soapy water was as clean as us in hot soapy water. What was crucial was the soap and the scrubbing action.

The hot water is to get rid of grease. Not to get rid of germs

Nannyfannybanny · 15/01/2024 22:44

Yes. You touch your face, eyes in the night and in your sleep. People saying they don't get pee on their hands because they use toilet paper...you do realise it's permeable. Plenty of germs would grow on them overnight. Hope no one is getting up to breastfeed!

It's not that permeable and certainly not that quickly. A quick wipe with several layers of paper doesn't give any time for the urine to pass through before you chuck it in the bowl.

Seriously there are massively more bacteria in or on almost anything else you touch. This whole subject is more about psychology then biology.

Guys, if there’s anything this thread has taught me it’s that my nana was right when she said never eat from a bowl of peanuts in a pub. She always used to say it was men who didn’t like washing their hands after having a pee - sexist I know. You lot are wrong uns. 😂 I’m sure I’ll have a load of “But it’s different when it’s a public toilet!” 😁

I've read this advice many times and I'm yet to see a bowl of peanuts on a bar in a pub. It's an American thing. Nana can rest easy.

I always have a good rummage through the open cereal packets before I go back to bed 😉

usernother · 15/01/2024 22:51

Of course! I wash my hands using a new bar of soap which is then binned immediately. I then bleach my hands for 3 minutes. I dry them on a clean towel which is put on a 90 degree wash straight afterwards. I thought everyone did this.

UnctuousUnicorns · 15/01/2024 22:51

And here come all the mingers' excuses... 🙂

I think that's disgusting. Surely you put the toilet lid down? Otherwise there's a bowl of steaming urine left festering all night. Ugh.

Blinky21 · 15/01/2024 22:52

Wash or use sanitiser

Delatron · 15/01/2024 22:53

There’s nothing wrong with a few of your own germs. I mean most people shower in the morning anyway.

scrambled678 · 15/01/2024 22:53

No.

Sleep 1
Hygiene 0

UCcreddit · 15/01/2024 22:54

Nope, our upstairs sink tap takes forever for even lukewarm water to come out, so we're always washing our hands in cold water. I'm not about to do that at 4am in the winter.

Sometimes if I'm feeling fancy I'll squirt some hand sanitiser and rub it in my hands on my way back to bed. There's been a pump-style bottle on our bannister for some reason for the past few months.

DonnaBanana · 15/01/2024 22:54

I don't usually bother, it's not like I'm touching my fanjo or getting them dirty in any way whatsoever. I would for a poo though.
