Do you wash your hands after a wee in the night?

It’s the middle of the night and you’re up for a wee. (Assume you’ve just dabbed yourself dry with loo roll, no other bodily fluids present!) Do you do a full 30 second soap and water hand wash vs after? A quick water-only rinse, and pat dry? Not wash at all and go straight back to bed? Something else completely?

I’ve often wondered what others do but too afraid to ask in real life 🫢

Meh.... Considering there is more bacteria in tap water than in urine, I wouldn't bother.

LemonMeringueMmm · 15/01/2024 22:29

No.

Why would you?

The reason for washing your hands is in case you've a) got any poo on them (unlikely) and b) used a public toilet where the flush button and door handles may have poo on them or other bacteria that can cause tummy upsets.

My home is clean and there is no need.

There's a lot of illogical thinking around hygiene.

Josette77 · 15/01/2024 22:30

Do people leave their toilet seats up all the time? I always close mine to flush so fecal particles don't fly everywhere.

And yes I wash after sex. First my vulva and then my hands.

Bleurgh

Isn't it sort of just second nature to wash hands after a wee? Even in my sleep I'm pretty sure I'd wash my hands!

I agree with you.

TheChosenTwo · 15/01/2024 22:30

I would in theory but as I don’t get up in the night it’s not something I need to do! The only time I get go for the loo in the night is on the rare occasion that I am on my period and with PCOS this is no joke, usually requires a shower and certainly a change of underwear at least once! Thankfully I only get one or two a year 😂

therealcookiemonster · 15/01/2024 22:31

it's extremely unhygienic to not wash hands after weeing (whatever the time of day). no matter the effort, small particles of urine will almost inevitably end up on hands... then transferred to bedsheets and other parts of the body eg. face unless you literally don't move in your sleep (which isn't going to happen).

I mean theoretically if you change sheets every day and have a shower in the morning it's fine. but for example touching door handles, the shower door, taps etc. etc. all will cause contamination. urine by itself is sterile, but left out is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Miiaaoow · 15/01/2024 22:31

I do with soap but don't wait for the tap to warm up as it takes ages so it's cold water, which is better than nothing.
I always have the lid down so I'm touching the toilet and feel grimy if I didn't. Though even if I didn't I would still feel too grimy to get back in bed.

I also go to the loo 'blind' with my eye mask still on haha so not an excuse castironkiller

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/01/2024 22:31

No. I am terrible sleeper so can't risk anything that will wake me up fully. I'd never get back to sleep. Sleep is more important than worrying about any germs.

Besides, I don't think it's disgusting... it's a bit of wee! Which I don't get on my hands anyway because I use toilet paper.

I have a shower and wash my hands in the morning. Haven't died yet.

CatamaranViper · 15/01/2024 22:32

Nah, my toilet and sink are in different rooms and it's bad enough shuffling into one pitch dark room during the night.

I had a word with the germs at my house though and we have a truce at night. I leave them alone and they leave me alone.

Much like the truce I have with the spiders.

Paw2024 · 15/01/2024 22:32

No, just go back to bed
The cat sleeps under the duvet with me too
And I'm immunocompromised Blush
Have a stomach of steel and my consultant has gone from "please wash bagged salad" to "whatever, please bite the apple BEFORE the horse"

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/01/2024 22:32

Mostly no, sometimes I give a quick rinse, I don’t really think about it and I think autopilot prompts me one way or the other but not always the same way. Probably skip washing them more often than I rinse though.

Mayjune11 · 15/01/2024 22:33

Why? I don’t get wee all over my hands?

idkbroidk · 15/01/2024 22:33

i actually feel sick reading this thread, i'm out

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 15/01/2024 22:33

No flush, no wash

5128gap · 15/01/2024 22:33

Wash hands, use bidet. Disinfect and scrub toilet (by hand, no toilet brush here!) and clean bidet, then rewash hands. Change underwear. Put dirty underwear in washing machine on hot wash. Or if very tired, double bagged and in special bin to wash in the morning. Wash hands. Use hand sanitiser. Wash hands again.
Why wouldn't you?

Thecatmaster · 15/01/2024 22:33

I researched it after my 6 year old daughter asked me 'why do we keep food in the fridge to stop germs, yet use warm water to wash our hands?'. I'd actually never thought about it before. And then it seemed bloody obvious that of course the water would have to be boiling to kill any germs. I assumed therefore that the warm water must help melt the soap, but nope. It Made no difference. Obviously warm water feels much nicer, but doesn't make any difference. The UK hygiene regs haven't caught up yet though. I'm a cake maker and the regs still require me to have hot running water in my hand basin before I start work each day! I believe that the largest study was carried out only a few years ago and the latest research came out as a result of COVID.

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 15/01/2024 22:34

Nope.

Wee with eyes shut, no light on, cursing my weak bladder.

No wash, no flush.

Roll back into bed.

Still alive 47 years on….

Kit60 · 15/01/2024 22:34

Guys, if there’s anything this thread has taught me it’s that my nana was right when she said never eat from a bowl of peanuts in a pub. She always used to say it was men who didn’t like washing their hands after having a pee - sexist I know. You lot are wrong uns. 😂 I’m sure I’ll have a load of “But it’s different when it’s a public toilet!” 😁

RoseDog · 15/01/2024 22:34

I flush and give my hands a quick rinse I never** put a light on though...just incase there is a something creeping about then I fall over the black cat who thinks I've got up to feed her!

Why are you scrubbing the toilet and changing underwear?

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/01/2024 22:35

I saw on TV they proved that a wooden chopping board washed in cold soapy water was as clean as us in hot soapy water. What was crucial was the soap and the scrubbing action.

Tryingmybestadhd · 15/01/2024 22:35

Brief wash but not 30 seconds

Perfectlystill · 15/01/2024 22:36

It's

Delatron · 15/01/2024 22:36

Good point about the intimate itch… far more germs there than a bit of toilet roll. Are you washing your hands after every scratch?

43ontherocksporfavor · 15/01/2024 22:36

@Paw2024 I detect sarcasm from that poster.😉
