What would you gift a child that they would love but their parent would hate? 10-14 years

Some bright spark bought my 6 year old boy a recorder at Christmas - I'd like to think it was innocent. I'm now plotting my revenge. So go on, what would you buy that a child would love but the adult would flip a lid? It can't be overtly a problem. Child aged between 10 and 14.

Mumsnet, do your worst.

I wouldn't.

It's petty and childish and most importantly the parents will either take it away or severely restrict it's use.

How is that fair on the child, while you're 'plotting revenge' on the parents?

I think the post is supposed to be light hearted.

Brother in law ditched his four kids with us so he could drink and dance with his partner at DH's dad's wedding. We were in our 20s, he in his 30s, so all tweens and younger. We were babysitting while they were piggybacking round the pub garden! We were sorely tempted to buy the kids a drum kit each for Christmas. Have you done anything to offend?? Just kidding, but sort of not!

YireosDodeAver · 14/01/2024 12:02

A drum kit.

You could say that about anything that's unfair to kids, but it wouldn't make it ok 🤷‍♂️

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 12:13

Drum kit, guitar or better still - a saxophone, hours of annoyance and he can't complain as it's "educational" (my dd plays the sax it's loud!)

Sera1989 · 14/01/2024 12:13

A violin, Furby (kids probably too old for that though), dart board, those sticky balls that stick to the ceiling, karaoke microphone that echoes

Some sort of “making” kit. We had a rainbow cake one that took all day because of cooking the separate layers and a science one that dh with a chemistry degree couldn’t make head nor tail of. Also a microscope kit that pushed things to the edge.

A harmonica. My mum bought them for our boys and they were permanently attached to them for weeks trying to out noise each other. I often wondered what I'd did wrong 🤣

WhyAmINotCleaning · 14/01/2024 12:22

A cheap violin and LOADS of violin lessons, with a message saying uou can't wait to hear how they have got on when you next visit.

Mumsnet, you have not disappointed! And, yes, it is (mostly) lighthearted.

Give their kid a recorder too and then send your kid round so they can 'practise together'. 😂

AnaVanda · 14/01/2024 12:24

My brother bought my son a worm farm. You have to layer different coloured soils then dig worms up from the garden and drop them in with greens to eat. You could watch them churn up the soil over a few days. That was fun!

Oh dear Lord! That's a spectacularly bad/good choice of present (dependent on perspective!)
