What would you gift a child that they would love but their parent would hate? 10-14 years

Some bright spark bought my 6 year old boy a recorder at Christmas - I'd like to think it was innocent. I'm now plotting my revenge. So go on, what would you buy that a child would love but the adult would flip a lid? It can't be overtly a problem. Child aged between 10 and 14.

Mumsnet, do your worst.

10-14 kids are not as much into toys nowadays so it needs to be something that will require parental input, cleaning up after and perhaps cost........🤔

first thing that comes to mind is something like a chocolate fountain, or candy floss making machine.

something loud....... ds(19) has recently rediscovered the harmonica that his late grandpa used to own and gave to him when he was about 8. It drives me potty as he is not musical at all and it is just noise!

A stylpphone (the pocket synthesisers). Perfect for the ages you're buying for and fucking nerve shatteringly annoying. They're not that expensive on eBay either.

This. I was thinking of a zylophone (sp) but this is even better!

Table tennis set. Puts the dining table out of use.

A 5,000 piece Hogwarts jigsaw puzzle. Ditto

Glitter bath bombs. The mess.

A dart board. The peril.

Bagpipes. 😂

Bath crayons.
We got these. They say they 'wash off' they don't you have to scrub them off.

spicedlemonpie · 14/01/2024 15:07

Drum kit i got one once for my sisters child he loved it she hated it.
He would be on it at 5:30 6 am lovely music.
I was home sleeping soundly.
Best £20 id spent that year.

TakeMe2Insanity · 14/01/2024 15:09

Someone gave our 8 year old a loud hailer voice changer for his birthday the week before I had a baby. Yup.

Scissor · 14/01/2024 15:10

Soda stream.
Looks thoughtful in cost of living crisis, makes annoying fart noises, accessories expensive plus CO2 refills and the children quickly learn to burp rather spectacularly.
Though adults can make tonic water so with enough gin they might be able to ignore it.

Thehobbit2013 · 14/01/2024 15:11

Basketball and hoop. Thus thud thud for hours on end!

FrillyGoatFluff · 14/01/2024 15:28

Kazoo.

Possibly the only musical instrument more annoying than a recorder.

Chestnutsroastgreen · 14/01/2024 15:29

Aquabeads

Condoms.

that would be a bit… weird and disturbing given it is for 10-14 year olds. The OP would come off as looking seriously odd!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 14/01/2024 16:14

A potter's wheel!
Honestly someone bought my child one and they can't help themselves they have to spin it at top speed and use as much water as possible.
I ended up throwing her outfit she was wearing as I'd used every stain remover ever invented and I had to repaint one of my living room walls as the splash marks stained!
Do it do it do it 😂🤣😂

A violin, Furby (kids probably too old for that though), dart board, those sticky balls that stick to the ceiling, karaoke microphone that echoes

Instill have a poo shaped splodge on my ceiling thanks to kids relative who bought one of them a sticky fake poo

Vuvuzela

Ex bought the kids one each. I left it at his house for them. It disappeared.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/01/2024 16:55

Just seen Jaw Harps popping up on TikTok.

That could last a good while.

Henryhover · 14/01/2024 16:58

This has got to be my favourite thread of the day! 🤣🤣🤣
But definitely a microphone. Seen people on tiktok using them when out driving (used by the passenger before anyone comes for me) telling people to hurry up because they weren't doing the speed limit etc 🤣

Thecatmaster · 14/01/2024 17:02

Harmonica

Babyboomtastic · 14/01/2024 17:07

Slime gun!

Like a nerf gun but shoots out slime.

A cat piano (really it's a keyboard each key meows a different note) my 13 year old, her 14 year old friends are all really keen on getting one although I would have thought it was for much younger age. Unsurprisingly none arrived at Christmas

Had to look it up & now I want one. This, from the product features, is a bit of a giveaway:

'Record and playback songs over and over and over'😂

Yup, it's a contender.
