What would you gift a child that they would love but their parent would hate? 10-14 years

Some bright spark bought my 6 year old boy a recorder at Christmas - I'd like to think it was innocent. I'm now plotting my revenge. So go on, what would you buy that a child would love but the adult would flip a lid? It can't be overtly a problem. Child aged between 10 and 14.

Mumsnet, do your worst.

Actually you can get a mini canon for under £30 that would be brilliant.

Comefromaway · 14/01/2024 12:55

You could say that about anything that's unfair to kids, but it wouldn't make it ok 🤷‍♂️

i’ll take a punt… you don’t have children

Tennis ball and racket - thud, thud, thud, thud against the back wall....hours upon hours.

siressmins · 14/01/2024 13:16

Came on here to say a glitter bomb. I see a few have mentioned glitter, but a glitter bomb is what you really want.

Oh, and a few of these.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 14/01/2024 13:19

All the glitter!! Wink

GrassWillBeGreener · 14/01/2024 13:20

You've reminded me that I didn't find out my husband couldn't stand recorders, until I'd already bought DD her first one (age 5). Admittedly she already had a violin before that ...

Having said that, she went on to play to a high standard in two excellent school recorder groups, and DH now understands that recorders can be lovely if only they are played properly.

Oh and both my children were indoctrinated that violin does not have to sound horrible for years, not just from learning themselves but then I took up teaching it ... The 6 and under class in our local music festival in a few weeks is going to be great fun!

BertieBotts · 14/01/2024 13:21

DH is lamenting the aftershave we got teenage DS for Christmas as he wears so much of it 😁

ifIwerenotanandroid · 14/01/2024 13:33

Not only glitter but sequins, or a fabric sewn with sequins for the kid to make Barbie clothes etc - once the fabric is cut it will shed sequins everywhere, & they'll be finding them forever.

A swanee/slide whistle.

Any toy that's fitted with noise-making tech. We once got inveigled by a child into working out why their doggie wasn't working. DH fixed it & it produced all its sounds again. Parents returned to the room & it became obvious that they'd deliberately disabled it.😂

1234Kitty · 14/01/2024 13:45

Bath pens/crayons
Nail art kit with all the chemicals
A giant bucket of unfilled water balloons
Cheap perfume
A popcorn maker
Cake pop maker
Graffiti artist book and can of paint

Losingmymind85 · 14/01/2024 13:45

A stylpphone (the pocket synthesisers). Perfect for the ages you're buying for and fucking nerve shatteringly annoying. They're not that expensive on eBay either.

NiceUnusualDifferent · 14/01/2024 13:59

Glitter bath bombs.

clpsmum · 14/01/2024 14:01

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 14/01/2024 11:59

I wouldn't.

It's petty and childish and most importantly the parents will either take it away or severely restrict it's use.

How is that fair on the child, while you're 'plotting revenge' on the parents?

There's always one

Peachyscream · 14/01/2024 14:03

A craft set with glitter. Lots of glitter

UnbeatenMum · 14/01/2024 14:06

Tie dye kit

MissMelanieH · 14/01/2024 14:13

A large pack of Gelli baff...great fun whilst you're playing but the stuff does not go!!

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 14/01/2024 14:16

A cat piano (really it's a keyboard each key meows a different note) my 13 year old, her 14 year old friends are all really keen on getting one although I would have thought it was for much younger age. Unsurprisingly none arrived at Christmas

MrsWombat · 14/01/2024 14:30

A ukulele would be the teen equivalent of a cheap musical instrument gift.

Or be very generous with a large Lego set of Hogwarts etc that they would need to find a place for.
