What would you gift a child that they would love but their parent would hate? 10-14 years

Some bright spark bought my 6 year old boy a recorder at Christmas - I'd like to think it was innocent. I'm now plotting my revenge. So go on, what would you buy that a child would love but the adult would flip a lid? It can't be overtly a problem. Child aged between 10 and 14.

Mumsnet, do your worst.

My brother bought my son a worm farm. You have to layer different coloured soils then dig worms up from the garden and drop them in with greens to eat. You could watch them churn up the soil over a few days. That was fun!

I think the child would really like this. Mum is a scientist, so she probably would too.

Slime making supplies (Elmer’s etc) including glitter and foam balls 😇

Tickets to dreadful pre teen music

Harmonica or a kazoo

Baking book and supplies

Voucher to feed a llama, pig, ostrich etc

That's bloody brilliant. Do you speak from bitter experience?

Give their kid a recorder too and then send your kid round so they can 'practise together'. 😂

You are awful, but I like you!

Oh, I've just come up with an idea. A potter's wheel. I had one of those as a kid and Mum used to moan about the mess.

anything that comes in a kit with more than twenty pieces, which involves a great deal of mess and parental involvement. Or a slime making kit.

coodawoodashooda · 14/01/2024 12:29

A kazoo or whistle

I got DD one willingly 🤣

yarnwitch · 14/01/2024 12:32

I agree something musical, as the recorder was such a hit with your son you thought it would be a lovely idea to gift something similar back Grin
My DD made a spectacular mess with a bath bomb making kit (think sachets of powder with vials of scent and coloured dye!)
And also those crystal painting kits are surprisingly messy. Packets upon packets of minute crystals that get everywhere, and are impossible to pick up and store.

sprigatito · 14/01/2024 12:33

Vuvuzela

Nineteendays · 14/01/2024 12:34

boomerang (something will break)
ant farm (you have to acquire you own ants somehow)
slime
slime making
any making kits

Mistlebough · 14/01/2024 12:37

Pet rats, giant snails, tarantula or snake.

I've given those a swerve myself - perfect!

DH bought his 3 year old nephew a work bench for his birthday complete with drill sounds. He promptly started to hammer and drill the walls and everything in sight. Bought him a drum kit for Christmas. It was revenge for years of glitter sets, kinetic sand, play doh and paint sets SIL bought for our kids. Sorry, not sorry.

Parentofeanda · 14/01/2024 12:49

Has happened to me in little ways BUT the worse I've heard was a MIL that bought a 5 and 7 yr old 2 puppies. .. 1 each ....
I would have been fuming

AppleKatie · 14/01/2024 12:49

Shame the kids too old for it but massive play tents that take up entire rooms are a good one for younger kids 😂

drum kit/karoke microphone/indoor basketball?

Comefromaway · 14/01/2024 12:52

If I had the money definitely a drum kit.

or a pair of bongos as a cheaper option.

Tilllly · 14/01/2024 12:52

Ant farm

Sea monkeys
