I am really really really fed up of January

Feel free to grumble with me. Or tell me to pull myself together. Or suggest how to get motivated!

My pointless grumble…

i can’t afford nights out. Or days out for that matter. It’s dark early and there are only so many cosy nights in I can enjoy.
I can’t be bothered wondering into town because it’s all the same places.
I can’t get into books.
Have watched a few good films but can’t find many I want to watch.
Cant work up the motivation to do much of anything.

Me too. It’s so awful here that I have started to look for jobs overseas. Know anyone recruiting?

Watchkeys · 13/01/2024 18:27

Get up early and get a return ticket on a bus. Buy a coffee in a cafe in another town where you've never been before, then come home. You'll feel different.

Check out free online education.

Stop drinking.

AlisonDonut · 13/01/2024 18:30

It drags and drags and you can't do anything.

I remember when I used to get paid early for Christmas so I had even more weeks to eek out my wage til payday.

I hate January. If it isn't frozen it is wet. And if it isn't wet it is frozen. Hate it.

It never ends...until it does and then spring comes and we are off.

OpalOrchid · 13/01/2024 18:32

It doesn't help that January has about 59 days in it.

Im
living on Diazapam and wine ( not together)

Horrendous and crippling anxiety.

Utterly miserable and I am a ball of anxiety.

It is horrible.

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 13/01/2024 18:34

The kids might be tempted into town tomorrow if I offer cake.

I did think of trying to find something to study but work is quite taxing at the moment. Not a fan of online activities/study.

Thought about park runs but can’t quite make it out.

The going somewhere different might be a good idea.

I swear it's been January the 13th for at least a week.

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 13/01/2024 18:39

Sorry to hear that. Hope things get easier.

The only thing that works for me is “fake it till you make it” so I basically rev myself up with a load of basically unachievable targets for the year and then just throw myself at them so I feel like I’ve got momentum. So I’m currently doing a tonne of running which is free and also makes me less bitter about Dry Jan. The target will probably never be met but it gives me a feeling of progress towards something.

Maybe apply to go on Gladiators 🤣

Just do it. Honestly, coffee somewhere you've never been before can rock your world, especially if you get up early to go there, with no intention at all to do anything other than be.

LaLoose · 13/01/2024 18:46

@BananaSplitsss so sorry. But also, you are being prescribed Diazepam? I was but they said they aren’t giving it to anyone any more. Lucky you. Take care x

Yes, and exercise really helps too. Doesn't matter what, running, swimming, cycling, gym, walking. Can be hard to motivate yourself to start but you really do feel great after.

Nutellaonall · 13/01/2024 18:49

I love it. Have packed the kids off to school. Packed up the Christmas decks and started to find a bit of routine again after an exhausting December with the Christmas build up and the entertaining the kids in miserable weather.

Not made it to the gym yet due to being ill but plan to next week. Have had a few lovely crisp walks which December was mostly too wet and miserable for. Have started a bit of spring cleaning on my non-work days whilst listening to audible books which I couldn’t do with the kids off around me and been letting myself rest and potter.

SeatonCarew · 13/01/2024 18:52

It's bloody awful, yanbu.

Take lots of vitamin D and start saving up for a bolthole in the sun. £60-70k should get you something. x

SeatonCarew · 13/01/2024 18:57

Alternatively in the meantime, gently twinkling fairy lights and cups of tea can cheer things up no end. The days are getting longer, and soon you'll notice it.

MacLaine · 13/01/2024 19:00

As with everything, life is what you make it.

Kalevala · 13/01/2024 19:01

The snowdrops are coming up 😊

You can walk after dark, I like to walk to catch a sunset then about half an hour back to the car on a weekend evening. You could even try a night hike.

NahHumBrag · 13/01/2024 19:02

I love January. Christmas is long forgotten (thank god), the bulbs are coming up, amazing sunsets, birds are marking their territories with song, food is lovely and healthy, Spring is round the corner, I can go to the gym every day and then chill at home, meet friends for walks - Love it!

PlipPlopChoo · 13/01/2024 19:06

I do not mind January. We will soon be mid way through winter and the nights are already gradually getting lighter and ditto the mornings. The buds are on some of the bushes and trees and we are not too far from nicer weather.

It is October and November that really get me depressed.

PlipPlopChoo · 13/01/2024 19:08

I can go to the gym every day

This is the worst thing about January. The gym is bloody heaving with the 'new years club' fortunately they generally only persist with it for a few weeks.

Kalevala · 13/01/2024 19:10

We are now gaining 2 minutes of daylight per day, 25 minutes up already since midwinter, and this will accelerate the closer we get to equinox.

EmpressSoleil · 13/01/2024 19:11

I get paid weekly so January is a good month for me as its 5 weeks pay rather than 4! That's my one positive spin on it! Not so good if you're paid monthly.

It'll soon be over then we'll be heading for spring.
