I am really really really fed up of January

Feel free to grumble with me. Or tell me to pull myself together. Or suggest how to get motivated!

My pointless grumble…

i can’t afford nights out. Or days out for that matter. It’s dark early and there are only so many cosy nights in I can enjoy.
I can’t be bothered wondering into town because it’s all the same places.
I can’t get into books.
Have watched a few good films but can’t find many I want to watch.
Cant work up the motivation to do much of anything.

I can go to the gym every day

This is the worst thing about January. The gym is bloody heaving with the 'new years club' fortunately they generally only persist with it for a few weeks.

Ah, I don’t mind them! It’s nice to see them tackle a hard class and win. It’ll be back to normal in a couple of weeks anyway.

It doesn't help that January has about 59 days in it.

At least

I am really really really fed up of January
cantbecaught · 13/01/2024 19:22

Don't mean to be annoying but attitude is everything. Yes I vastly prefer summer. But I make sure I plan nice things in. I'm skint too. But weekends mean walks with friends and midweek I'm doing new exercise classes and reading books I might normally not pick up. You need to force some winter cheer in!

Analysisandparalysis · 13/01/2024 19:25

Since peri-menopause, I abhor the heat of summer so am embracing winter and spring and the relief of autumn.

Plus vitamin D and lots of it - it really does help.

mynamechangemyrules · 13/01/2024 19:27

Can I just add- I have children's birthdays in Jan and Feb and that makes it even shittier and me even more skint. Wish they had lovely summer birthdays (like me 😬) but they weren't born here and hadn't even thought about it till we moved here.

I am sorting through boxes from storage which is also shit.

But books somehow help even though I struggle to focus on them, and I've got some new charity shop ones.

Plus I've just properly discovered British TV- have watched a million series of Shetland and Unforgotten- fab winter watching! Now watching Vera- good but not so fab so open to recos everyone!

Faceplantagain · 13/01/2024 19:31

So far this January the dishwasher has stopped working, a fence pole snapped in Storm Whatever It Was Called and I fell over on the ice and sustained some nasty bruises. In addition, because I'm freelance working for several employers, I submitted all my invoices for the work I did in December in the first week back, and no bastard has actually paid me yet. Because of all this misfortune I've not had the heart to start my much needed New Year diet, so am now fatter and crosser than I'd like.

IpanemaCaipirinha · 13/01/2024 19:34

I like the reset of January. At least it’s been dry (in the south east) for walking. I’m watching some tv and reading and enjoying quiet time.

First social event next Friday so I am looking forward to that.

LetMeDream · 13/01/2024 19:34

I just accept that this month is a bit of a slog to get through.
I'm doing more overtime until end of feb, because l just don't want the time to drag.
I do try and get out for a walk still.
I'm planning new garden borders and looking to redecorate my house.
But there are lots of times l also don't feel like doing much at all.

Rufilla · 13/01/2024 19:46

I started a new job a few months ago and suffered massively with new job blues for about a month. All fine after that until 2nd of Jan after the holidays. Boom. Back where I was, feeling utterly depressed. I genuinely don’t know if it’s the job or I’m just suffering from January.

I like New Year’s Day. The rest of it is dreadful and it’s unfortunately followed by February, which is only slightly less so.

DillDanding · 13/01/2024 19:51

I quite like January. <runs off>

Judellie · 13/01/2024 20:00

Totally agree, have never liked January and it goes on FOREVER! However today and last Saturday I've been for a bike ride with my daughter; last week was awful, it was grey, miserable, my legs were killing me and all exercise could do one! Today, the sun was shining and I quite enjoyed it.
Payday is still faraway but cycling is free and we've ended up cycling to McDonalds - last week the chips were cold and there was about 5 people there; today the chips were hot and there were more people, things are starting up again. And I might even win a prize on their Fryanaury competition.
I've been helping my daughter organise her tombola prizes for her fundraiser tomorrow and we're now watching the Harry Potter films - except for the first one, I've never seen them as I far prefer books. It's just a bit annoying when thre's quiz questions and they go by the film rather than the book (eg in the books The Sorting Hat is done alphabetically and starts with Hannah Abbott, the film it's Hermione Grainger!).
I'm also not doing any of the rubbish that makes January even worse, Veganuary, Dry January (tho teetotal anyway) and yes, Slimmimg World can wait til spring too.
I like the idea of a PP to go somewhere else for the day; I should have got a couple of those £1 tickets from Northern trains but I missed them; considering going to Carlisle on the train for the day soon.

Bookworm12345 · 13/01/2024 20:05

I don't like this January so far, it's been awful. My dear Dad died 3 days after his birthday on 1st January. Now trying to help my mum organise his funeral while juggling our 5 children, the youngest of which is only 2 months old and will grow up never knowing him 😢

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 13/01/2024 20:23

So sorry @Bookworm12345

What are the new job blues @Rufilla ? I was hoping a new job might help.

My only consolation is that it’s not as bad as January 2021, which, what with lock down home learning with three children under 7 and my job never having been as busy, and the fact the sun didn’t come out here for practically the whole month (which did last 379 days or something) was hell.

i’m with you. January can go away. One day I’ll have no children at home and hopefully enough money to pay and go somewhere sunny in Januaries.

Doesthatmakemecrazy · 13/01/2024 20:36

God I forgot about lockdowns.

Boxsets

Do the park run tomorrow - you feel way better (sorry)

Naptrappedmummy · 13/01/2024 20:39

I must be a bit odd as I LOVE January. It’s a relief to take all the Christmas things down. The weather is usually pretty cold but sunny and feels fresh. I feel a bit optimistic and make plans for the coming year including holidays, etc.

AceofPentacles · 13/01/2024 20:44

I had a really busy October - December so I'm knackered and making the most of staying in reading books and watching tv, snoozing. We are meant to hibernate a bit in the winter I reckon

theduchessofspork · 13/01/2024 20:45

Burns night always cheers me up actually. Nothing like a haggis and 9 types of whisky

Or you could take HRT and not need it to be fucking freezing.

NarrowGate · 13/01/2024 20:48

Years ago I read on Mumsnet about a D3 supplement that’s 20,000 units unlike the trifling amounts in most D3 tablets. It’s called Hux and I take it every other day during December and January. I haven’t had winter blues in all the years I have taken it. My SAD used to be debilitating - I remember walking home after work in the dark once with tears pouring down my cheeks for no particular reason at all. Anyhow, doesn’t happen now.

Bought an electric blanket, a blow heater to go under my desk, Uggs, and a duvet for the sofa to make WFH and staying indoors comfortable. Then invested in a massive parka, cashmere socks, sheepskin hat and gloves and sheepskin in-soles for my boots for going out for walks. Always cosy now.

I have fairy lights lit from when the clocks go back until they go forwards. It’s just twinkly enough to make the house look nice, but not so much that it looks like we forgot to take down the Christmas decorations.

We celebrate Lunar New Year in late January. Nobody in this house is Chinese or East Asian, but it was a big thing when I lived down in London, and I always liked it so have kept it up. We go for an epic banquet at a really good Chinese restaurant. Afterwards it’s a hop, skip and jump to Valentine’s Day (which I have made into a big home dinner occasion for us) and then Spring is here.

Have flowers and plants in the house, plant bulbs, and make lists of flowers I want to grow this year.

The key is to have things to look forward to, and to accept that it’s a difficult time so you must do everything you can to cheer yourself up.

CrapBucket · 13/01/2024 20:53

It is a shitty month and although I do millions of the things suggested in this thread, I do them despite winter and they would be better still in the summer.

strawberryandtomato · 13/01/2024 20:56

I'm still having a drink at weekends. I allowed myself a good rest the first 5 days and we are away for weekend celebrating birthdays. All very chilled. Can't believe it's almost half way through jan.
December was crazy so I am enjoying the calmness jan brings.
Usually I hate January. I am very tired though. And next week at work is crazy so not looking forward to that.
Need some sunshine

Conversation snippet from about 10.30am today:

But...but..it can't be - it was only Christmas a couple of weeks ago!

Well, you'd have to have a word with my parents about their abominable timing. It is definitely the 13th and, just as it is every year, it is definitely my birthday.
