Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

Glad you went. If you can't keep liquid down you need medical attention!

WhyAmINotCleaning · 14/01/2024 05:30

I'm glad you went op. Were you in pain with the peritonitis?

mumedu · 14/01/2024 05:57

Please call 111 or go to A&E. You might need an IV drip if you are dehydrated. The black poo (no iron taken) and sense of impending doom are also concerning. Trust your gut and get some help ASAP.

littlelizzard · 14/01/2024 06:04

get well soon OP Flowers

Zanatdy · 14/01/2024 06:16

Thank God you went in. To those early posters who said don’t go to A&E - did they even read the full post? Black tarry poo is clearly a sign of internal bleeding. It needs urgent medical attention

BeethovenNinth · 14/01/2024 06:26

Thank goodness Op. black stools is never good

all the “should I go to a and E” posts, by the time they post, should go to A and E. they know they should but feel guilty and feel they need Mumsnet permission.

I am not sure this kind of self flagellation is helpful, not least as you are delaying your medical attention which is usually becoming an emergency!

If you have black sticky stool it could be a bleed and you need to go to A&E. Melena has a very distinctive smell. I'd describe as nasty metal chocolate, but I'm a bit odd.

That's exactly it! I figured the metallic smell is the blood.

cryinglaughing · 14/01/2024 06:52

Wishing you a speedy recovery and glad you made your way to a & e.

Zonder · 14/01/2024 07:08

So sorry to hear that op. Hope you can make a quick recovery.

Umph · 14/01/2024 07:21

Oh goodness OP you poor thing!

JustExistingNotLiving · 14/01/2024 08:06

I’m really happy to see you are in safe hands now.
Wishing you a really speedy recovery @Doormouse46

Lamelie · 14/01/2024 08:14

You’re in the right place Flowers

Mynewnameis · 14/01/2024 08:17

That's really scary. Glad you went especially if you live alone.

111 does seem to work pretty well despite what some people say about it. I've used it a few times and have been sent straight to a&e once. The guy told me he was a paramedic. He could just tell i was ill. It was appendicitis. (Sadly my experience of a&e was a chair for 36 hours due to no beds).
For my kids we often get sent to out of hours who are also amazing. Better than the GPiaa they have medication to give out there . Plus they can admit to children's assessment ward.

I hope you have a bed now and will start to feel better quickly. Make sure you arrange some help and looking after at home and a long while off work to recover when the time comes.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/01/2024 08:20

I hope you get rest and hopefully the treatment has started OP. What a frightening experience and thank goodness for MN and 111. Try to take it easy and I wish you all the best as you recover from this.

TeaandHobnobs · 14/01/2024 08:29

You poor thing @Doormouse46 - so so glad you got seen. Wishing you a swift recovery.

Hi all, I’m at A and E being treated for internal bleeding and suspected sepsis. My heart rate was 48 and is usually in the 90’s as I’m quite unfit (and a bit overweight). Blood pressure very low. Temp is really low.

thanks for all your advice- I just want to say that the person who said (and I see this a lot of these type of threads) that if you’re well enough to post on Mumsnet then you’re not ill enough for hospital- it simply isn’t true and quite dangerous to say!

Bloody Hell @Doormouse46 I hope you are OK. You are in the best place now and I hope they sort you out. Hugs xx

Ulysees · 14/01/2024 08:38

I hope you've got on the ward now. This must be so scary 😞

At least read the op's posts even if you don't read the whole thread @mumedu 🤦🏻‍♀️

Doormouse46 · 14/01/2024 03:42

Thank you all. I’m waiting to be admitted on the ward but it’s a few hours wait for a bed. I have peritonitis caused by a burst stomach ulcer which has gone septic.

Hope you're settled on the ward now @Doormouse46 and are able to rest. Best wishes for a swift recovery Flowers

getfreddynow · 14/01/2024 08:44

hope you can manage some rest while treatment kicks in. Your body must feel awful. And your mum too with her hugely inadequate advice.

MaisyAndTallulah · 14/01/2024 08:52

Oh my gosh @Doormouse46 that sounds dreadful. Thank goodness you got yourself to hospital.

Wishing you a good recovery and please don't doubt yourself if ever you're unwell again.

HellsToilet · 14/01/2024 08:59

Glad you're in the right place now even after a series of bad advice. I had a GP receptionist refuse me an appointment when I was on several clotting meds and had a pain in my calf. She accused me of being dramatic when I said I wouldn't call back if anything changed, I'd dial 999. Luckily a GP must have overheard as I was called back within 2 minutes and offered an appointment that morning. Then there was the one who did the same, refused to even check with the doctor, when I was pissing blood. There's nothing more dangerous than a novice who thinks they're knowledgeable.

Also, if you're too ill to post on Mumsnet, it may well be too late.

Treeinthesky · 14/01/2024 09:03

Ring 111 get ooh gp appointment.

Next stop the shop, get a full can of full fat cola. Put in a glass with a spoon of sugar. Drink it of a spoon. It will stop sickness.

Pssspsss · 14/01/2024 09:03

Black tarry stools and burning stomach and literally bringing anything and everything back up in my opinion would have been an a&e visit and if I hadn’t been late to the party on this thread it’s what I would have said. Glad you are in the right place @Doormouse46 - get well soon
