Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

A doctors receptionist should be able to give you sound advice. Oh! You’ve asked one and don’t trust what she says.

Oh dear.
A receptionist - aka a non medical person - isn’t someone to automatically believe and trust. What a surprise!!

Thankfully the OP knew better than trust a non medical person and seek proper advice.
So she is now admitted to hospital due a very serious condition, incl internal bleeding, and actually treated. Just as well she trusted 111 instead.

Definitely do not go to A & E, you will pass your bug to everybody else there. Your sysmptoms can be managed at home, have a look online for tips on rehydrating etc. Once you can keep water down Dioralyte is very good for rehydrating and rebalancing the electrolytes.
Hope you feel better soon.

You might want to learn about red flags such as black foul smelling stools.

For reference, 111 is always a much better answer. You avoid giving people life threatening advice.

I think it's mainly a warning about the number of complete twonks that post, @BobnLen, lacking any self-awareness.

shockthemonkey · 14/01/2024 13:01

Oh god! Just saw this and was going to say bleeding stomach ulcer as it's what my poor DDog had many years ago. Same symptoms. She pulled through fine but it's that much harder diagnosing an animal so it took a while to twig what was happening.

So glad you're in hospital, get well soon!

absolutely

TakeMeToKernow · 14/01/2024 13:06

Oh god. The OP has reminded me of two threads. One where a Drs receptionist wouldn’t let an OP with black poo have an appointment. The other was Wormy(?) and her daughter Claire. Anyone remember wormy and Claire?

Sera1989 · 14/01/2024 13:17

Hope you are on the ward now and on the road to recovery!
You sounded very calm compared to most people who are considering A&E but the poop was a red flag. Because of the calmness, the comment about feeling like you're dying sounded dramatic but a feeling of "impending doom" is a legitimate medical symptom and I feel people do know when something is really really wrong. You must have been feeling awful with the dehydration and sepsis, you are probably a very stoic person so well done for being able to post on MN and for not taking your mum's advice

Rockschooldropout · 14/01/2024 13:25

I’ve only just seen this and as an ex nurse my first thought was absolutely go to a and e as this is a symptom of GI bleeding - thank goodness you went and are being treated

Was the wormy one the one that ended up all over Reddit ? Inverness ICU?

This is the sort of over confident advice that is really dangerous.

And another award to Sue2024 for lack of reading skills. CLICK THE BOTTOM RIGHT HAND 'SEE ALL' LINK ON OP'S POST.

Whew, I feel much better now....

biscuitnut · 14/01/2024 14:23

Thank goodness op went to hospital and didn’t listen to the ‘medical experts’ of Mumsnet. I just read her first post and straight away I knew how serious it was, only because it happened to me. I decided to soldier on because my boss made me feel pathetic for taking a day off ‘it’s a stomach bug biscuit!’ I nearly died of sepsis and was in hospital for 2 months.
The key things are don’t listen to other people’s advice. Deep down I knew something was very wrong and if you ‘feel like you are dying’ as op said and you know you are not being melodramatic then go to A &E. That’s what they are there for. Best wishes op for a speedy recovery

People really don't understand what A+E is for. Contact your gp for further investigation.

OP has vomiting and melaena. She has a burst gastric ulcer and sepsis. She is in hospital. Thankfully several posters on this thread do know what A and E is for and advised OP to get there asap.

Yes and you are clearly one of those people who do not know what a&e is for, if op had taken your advice she could be dead by now

DriftingDora · 14/01/2024 14:37

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 14/01/2024 11:32

Or give advice like this poster (who obviously hasn’t bothered reading either of the OP’s updates from hospital!!)

*Ring 111 get ooh gp appointment.

Next stop the shop, get a full can of full fat cola. Put in a glass with a spoon of sugar. Drink it of a spoon. It will stop sickness.*

Agree. You couldn't make up some of the advice on this thread - and all given without benefit of medical knowledge. Who needs medics when cola's just as good? 🙄

Thank you all. I’m waiting to be admitted on the ward but it’s a few hours wait for a bed. I have peritonitis caused by a burst stomach ulcer which has gone septic.

OMG @Doormouse46 - so glad the advice on here helped you to decide to get further help. I hope you are beginning to improve with treatment at the hospital. You are definitely in the right place.

MaisyAndTallulah · 14/01/2024 14:49

there are plenty of websites to ask the question, nhs for instance, would have answered the question rather than come on to Chat on this forum

The OP can post wherever she likes. It isn't easy to make rational decisions when your life is in danger, maybe don't berate someone for reaching out for help.

And you don't seem to understand @Anna8089

a)that it's best to read all posts before making comments
b) what you are talking about, medically.

Fortunately OP listened to others who were more knowledgeable medically and could have died if she had followed your advice 🙄🙄
