Should I go to A and E? I hate wasting time

Doormouse46 · 13/01/2024 18:06

Just to say I hate wasting time especially when A and E will be busy on the weekend. For the past 3 days, I have had sickness and diarrhoea. At first I thought it was a bug, then food poisoning then maybe Norovirus. I don’t want to go to the doctors if I’m going to make more people sick.

However, I noticed the vomiting/diarrhoea comes after I eat or drink only. I even tried to have a few strawberries this morning and within 20 minutes I vomited them back up.

The same this afternoon, I ate some toast following the brat method and it came straight back up. It’s the same with anything I drink even water. I’m so dehydrated my lips are chapped and I’m pale as a ghost.

The other thing I’ve noticed is my poo (sorry) is sort of black and thick now and smells horrendous even though I’ve not eaten for 3 days now. I’ve lost weight but that’s to be expected. I have a cracking headache which I think is from dehydration.

i really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried an anti sickness band, didn’t work- I’ve tried not eating which does work but I even bring up water.

I don’t know what to do. I feel sort of like I’m dying (sounds dramatic I know). I called my mum for advice as she’s a GP receptionist and she basically told me to keep out and keep drinking water best I can.

i just feel so helpless and can’t see an end to it. I’d appreciate any advice!

MNHQ PLEASE for the love of all that's holy can we have a pinned comment option for the OP on threads

A doctors receptionist should be able to give you sound advice. Oh! You’ve asked one and don’t trust what she says.

Over Xmas I had the runs for 7ndays I took loperimide to help

I think there are a couple of problems with advice :

  • people with no medical knowledge literally don't know what they don't know and therefore can give dangerous advice
  • trained HCPs are advising online with limited info which is also tricky
  • it's an anonymous forum posters don't know which is which.

I think it's best if advising to identify oneself as a HCP or not ( I am) but also most of us will advise to seek medical attention unless it is literally something completely benign sounding and non urgent.

  • some problems fall between GP OOH / 111 and immediate ambulance/ AE but at the very least phone 111 while deciding but never feel you are bothering anyone in AE if it's an emergency or severe illness as we would rather you present earlier than later.

Keep us updated OP we can help with medic talk/ jargon if needed x

A lovely idea but, sadly, you’ll find people who’s nearest link to being an HCP is watching Doctors or Casualty proclaim themselves to be an HCP or allied HP with knowledge.

I remember years ago on a forum I was a member of, someone claimed to be a cardiologist and was handing out advice to a couple of people that was supposedly up to date etc - well, after one of the people collapsed and became very ill following this “Dr’s” advice they were exposed as being a cleaner in a community clinic where a cardiologist did a session once every couple of months so that people didn’t need to travel to the hospital they were based in. The cleaner was lifting advice leaflets from the racks in the clinic and making it up as she went along!!

Have you thread the thread!! OP has been admitted to hospital!

Best wishes to OP Flowers

Perhaps we need a 'health' thread for those people who have a compulsion to gatekeeper other people's access to health services? Some people seem to spend their lesiure others enacting the role of the very worst kind of GPs receptionist and seeking out opportunities to tell other people their needs are unreasonable or illegitimate, and they should just get on with it.

Imissviolet · 14/01/2024 11:53

If they could keep themselves busy gatekeeping each other, it would at least mean the rest of the community was safer.

It is remarkable they are still coming out of the woodwork and chiming in now.

Sick bowls, inco pads, blankets. The same as every bodily fluid or severe injury. Then they clean inside the vehicle.

Thank you for explaining HappyHamsters

after posting, half an hour later the op called 111
whereas if she had googled her symptoms and got nhs advice, or any medical website, she would have got her answer

As soon as a poster adds an update to an original post, the message "PLEASE READ UPDATES BEFORE REPLYING" should automatically appear at the top of the original post. I'm convinced that so many people don't even bother to read to the end of the original post let alone any updates, especially on medical issues. It also should be possible to go to the updates quickly without being logged in.

Yeah and thank god she didn't or she would be dead. Almost like GP receptionists aren't actually doctors

AnythingBUTnursing · 14/01/2024 12:04

Thank god you went and wishing you a speedy recovery xx

midnightfeastfeats · 14/01/2024 12:05

@TheFifthTellytubby this is a good idea and it should explicitly say at the bottom right of the first post you can click on 'see all' op's posts as I think a lot of people don't know that judging from the amount of times you see answers on p.14 of a thread that are now irrelevant to the OP because things have moved on. Wasnt there a classic example of that about a cheque? vague memory...

Seeline · 14/01/2024 12:08

I have my settings so that all of an OPs posts are on a different colour background so really easy to spot.
I think MNHQ should have this as a standard setting.

I'm not sure if the 'read all' option works on all the different apps, mobile site and desk top which could be another issue to solve.

Trinity65 · 14/01/2024 12:09

CockSpadget · 14/01/2024 00:38

Ffs, why do so many people take it upon themselves to be the gatekeepers of A&E. OP was/is seriously ill, she hadnt just come on here with a sore throat, or a few hours of run of the mill D&V.
How many of you who said no A&E have ever had or have watched a family member go through 3 days of being unable to eat or drink without vomiting it straight back up, 24 hours without having a wee, vile smelling black tarry stools and being extremely pale while also feeling you are dying. I’m guessing not many of you, so stop giving ridiculous advice like it’s a normal occurrence!

@GrannyRose15

And good job she didn't listen or she might be dead now. If you had read OP's updates you would have seen that OP had been admitted to hospital with internal bleeding and sepsis from a burst stomach ulcer.

My MIL died from a burst stomach ulcer when she didn't make it to hospital in time.

Shiningout · 14/01/2024 12:21

Doctors receptionists are not doctors BTW, just incase that wasn't already clear 🙄

Sunday12 · 14/01/2024 12:30

So good to hear you’re in hospital. At least you’re in the right place and can be looked after. Get well very soon!

FourthToeOnTheRight · 14/01/2024 11:21

Hope any of the posters giving completely the wrong advice learn from this and step away from any similar threads in the future! You are not medically trained, please remember that!

Maybe OP should not have posted on a chat forum asking for medical advice in the first place. why would you get medical advice from unknown people on a chat forum, so maybe people will remember this is not a medical forum and not ask for advice from unknowns

WearyAuldWumman · 14/01/2024 12:38

Zanatdy · 14/01/2024 06:16

Thank God you went in. To those early posters who said don’t go to A&E - did they even read the full post? Black tarry poo is clearly a sign of internal bleeding. It needs urgent medical attention

Edited

Yup. Happened to my dad while Mum and I were away from home. Fortunately, he phoned Mum's sister, a retired nurse. Was told to go straight to doc.

Doc had him blue-lighted to hospital. Blood transfusion required.

HappyHamsters · 14/01/2024 12:41

We don't ever know if the op is genuine or any poster is genuine, the health forum can be very irresponsible when ppl ask for or give advice. Anyone can say they are an hcp. Maybe all posts should suggest they be directed to gp, 111 or 999 automatically.

Black excrement must always be checked out - it's well known that it can be caused by digested blood, following internal bleeding. One of the first things we were warned about when I was a first aider.

Switcher · 14/01/2024 12:45

Get well soon OP. Fingers crossed for you

Yeah @BobnLen, let's all have a go at OP whilst she lies in her hospital bed. Great idea.
