2 landing attempts and still not down.

I think it's windy there

Why are 16,000 watching the SFO flight? Just more USA viewers by dint of population?

That’s the one that’s squawking. Currently over Lancashire

EwwSprouts · 13/01/2024 12:01

BasilParsley · 13/01/2024 12:00

@EwwSprouts It's sent up a 7700 squawk indicates there's a problem with the plane - it's an emergency signal like mayday, mayday, mayday so people are watching to see what happens

Thanks. Hope a good outcome for all.

cakeorwine · 13/01/2024 12:02

titchy · 13/01/2024 12:01

7700 is an emergency code. Though tbh mostly they're not major, just flagging with ATC that there's an issue somewhere.

It's a Virgin SanFran to Heathrow.

Which flight had the 7700?

SFO-LHR flight. A medical emergency according to twitter.

titchy · 13/01/2024 12:03

No longer squawking so presumably all resolved.

Wonder if the Porto santo to Funchal flight has all those that were diverted to PS earlier?

Itsrainingloadshere · 13/01/2024 12:03

Hi yes that’s right, extra training is needed before pilots are signed off to land there

Placeinsky · 13/01/2024 12:05

Now I just need to figure out how to listen to ATC radio comms!

ScoobyDoesnt · 13/01/2024 12:05

Looks like they got over the "spit" and aborted

OP posts:
Placeinsky · 13/01/2024 12:08

TAP given up. Must be so frustrating to take off for a second time and then not land!

cakeorwine · 13/01/2024 12:08

Sometimes it's easy to forget that those planes on the screen have actual people in the plane experiencing it in reality.

Copenhagen going for broke. I hope that pilot is an expert on this airport

I watched it on 3D view (a simulation for those who don't know FR well). It was interesting.

I do wonder how "easy" it is to learn how to land commercial craft. I suppose one part of any job is "easy" with enough training but to an industry outsider it does look challenging.

cakeorwine · 13/01/2024 12:10

I wonder how much the other planes know about the planes that have tried but aborted. Do they follow on the ATC radio?

I experienced this a few weeks ago, trying to land in an area with severe storms. 2 hours of going in circles, waiting for other planes to land, finally diverted to another airport and brought us all back the next day. BA took very good care of us and I enjoyed an extra night in a new place!

Yep. I've been on a flight that was close to being diverted, and the pilot was telling us about other flights that were trying ahead of us.

ErnestCelendine · 13/01/2024 12:11

Easyjet diverted to Tenerife. Hope they get a strong drink and a decent holiday eventually! (Crew too!)

Just a heads up that in the UK at least you're not really meant to do that... doing so is still an offense under some ancient telecomms act unless you have an R/T licence.

We all know the reality, (i.e. that the enthusiasts have done it for years).. just be cautious and don't "rebroadcast" in any form anything you hear..

lunarleap · 13/01/2024 12:14

I used the tracker thing once to check on husband's flight progress but the thought of seeing it disappear off the radar scared me so I had to stop.

I had no idea! Will look into it thank you

The Warsaw plane descending also

The pilot on my diverted flight was constantly talking to the other airlines trying to land and updating us on the other airlines that could land and why. I think they are all on the same frequency as the ATC once they are close enough.

They'll have a clue.

A lot depends on how airspace is sun-divided: if the holding aircraft are on the same radio frequency as those on approach then everybody hears everything on the one channel

If the frequencies are separate then it's often possible to tune one of the secondary radios on the flight deck to the tower or other appropriate frequency to keep a track on things...

If in doubt you can ask ATC for the big picture.

I was on a flight into London during storm Henk. We sat in Berlin for 90mins waiting for a predicted lull because at our takeoff time the wind here was too strong.

I was sitting in the front row, and the crew kept the pilot door open throughout that 90 mins. The pilots were keeping up a running commentary about flights attempting to land in London - "nooo he's not going make that! Off he goes again! What's he doing now?! That Amsterdam one isn't taking off is it?" so they clearly had access to something - though might have also been flightradar on their phones ;-)

The final decision to take off was a -"oh come on, let's give it a go, no point sitting here!" ...

Warsaw next….
