2 landing attempts and still not down.

I think it's windy there

Do you need to have the paid version to see the most watched flights?

lordloveadog · 13/01/2024 11:16

I was stuck there for an extra 24 hours last week because the incoming SAS flight couldn't land and had to go to Gran Canaria for checks. They almost got down but had to go up again. Must have been rather frightening.

When it (actually same crew but different plane) eventually landed the next day, there were crowds of passengers on the viewing deck to applaud. It was quite sweet.

Four planes are trying to land!

Not surprised TBH, Funchal has got a wind of 28 knots out of the southwest with potential gusts to 35 so even though there is no crosswind the turbulence will be horrid.

The forecast is much the same for the next 18 hours - periods of very gusty winds so being able to land or not will be down to timing.

"Once more into the hold and scream if you want to go faster"

Hopefully someone will get that "brilliant" reference

Do you need to have the paid version to see the most watched flights?

No. On the main page, see the horizontal bar - just pull that down on your screen.

Do you need to have the paid version to see the most watched flights?

No, just drag down the short horizontal bar at the top.

Is Easyjet going for it?

Is Easyjet going for it?

Definitely- only 6000 ft now! Good luck!

Coldilocks · 13/01/2024 11:22

I am never going to go to Madeira.

Chrysanthemum5 · 13/01/2024 11:22

Ah thank you! Now I can join you all watching flights 😂

AnnoyingPopUp · 13/01/2024 11:22

@cakeorwine I’ve been ringing my bell and shouting “ding!!!!” since the Middle Ages 😉

GoldenArrow · 13/01/2024 11:23

I love Flight Tracker! Drains my phone battery dry though.

Lonelycrab · 13/01/2024 11:23

My parents went there a while back, said the landing was absolutely terrifying as it felt as though you were going to crash into the sea. At the last moment the runway appears beneath you, looks that way in the video a pp linked to.

Can’t say I fancy it, shame as it looks like a really interesting island.

Flew into Funchal many years ago before it was renamed. Interesting close up of the cliff as we landed but without incident. Scariest landing I've had was in a storm into Figaro in Corsica. Pilot changed his mind at about one metre off the ground. It was a steep climb out to go around again as it's in a dip.

I have to say that's a really weird list..

I've flown into a few of those and there's certainly nothing scary at all about places like Kansai... San Diego can be a bit short in a "heavy" but nothing that extraordinary and of course Kai Tak doesn't exist anymore.

I have read somewhere that pilots have to have special training to land planes in Madeira because of the runaway Not sure if it’s true or not but having flown into Funchal I think it might be true 😱

Yes apparently true (Easyjet pilot told me it’s for three airports in Europe: Innsbruck (land middle of mountains and often winds), Mykonos and Madeira

Ah my nan used to love going to Madeira back in the 70's and 80's. She'd always bring me back a little doll in National Dress, in a plastic tube.

ScoobyDoesnt · 13/01/2024 11:27

God this is addictive. Is the EasyJet from Lyon going for it?

ChanelQuiltedBag · 13/01/2024 11:28

Knew there’d be Cabin Pressure listeners on this thread! I was watching Hijack on Apple TV and the plane’s engines cut out so they had to start up the APU. Fortunately the outlet was clear of snow…

titchy · 13/01/2024 11:29

Bottled it!

ScoobyDoesnt · 13/01/2024 11:29

Yep, he’s climbing again! Got to 1700ft and gave up
